NASA-Funded Study Investigates Collapse of Industrial Civilization

pellik Re:It'll happen eventually (401 comments)

I'd wager on the middle-east becoming the new China. They have cheap labor, and very little environment to ruin.

They would need a lot of external resources, however.

Ask Slashdot: How Do I Change Tech Careers At 30?

pellik Re:Troll (451 comments)

There are so many examples of people in IT who are self taught I don't even know where to begin with your statement.

Many companies are willing to talk even with no degree and zero experience if you have a rare skill-set they are looking for and approach them at a hiring booth or trade show to explain your situation (not the HR filter people). Consider that for some skills (security- pentesting, RE) the degrees are practically worthless as the curriculum doesn't even come close.

However, specifically, this guy who just wants to install windows and set up a few services doesn't sound like he has a unique skill-set to leverage.

WikiLeaks Cables Foreshadow Russian Instigation of Ukrainian Military Action

Did you read the part in the summary which clearly states these actions were done at the behest of Moscow in order to destabilize the region and justify their eventual invasion?

The Rescue Plan That Could Have Saved Space Shuttle Columbia

pellik Re:However.. (247 comments)

You're not as far off as you imagine. The only speed change needed for the two orbits to meet is enough to match altitude where they intersect, which is likely not all that much. However, such a meeting may take a long time to occur. The upside though is that when they do meet it will remove any issues about the safety of de-orbiting.

Does Crime Leave a Genetic Trace?

pellik Re:What's wrong with eugenics? (160 comments)

I dunno, would descendants who are 100% dependent on an advanced technological society to survive live in an advanced technological society which is significantly more likely to persist than one who's occupants are not genetically adapted?

Neither. It's the super-paywall version where every tile you want to build takes 24 hours unless you pay them $2 PER TILE.

GOP Bill To Outlaw EPA 'Secret Science' That Is Not Transparent, Reproducible

pellik Politicalization nation (618 comments)

I wonder how many of the comments saying this bill is just to provide loopholes for industry wouldn't be here if there was a D before the state the congress-critter was from.
