Government Recommends Cars With Smarter Brakes

pjbgravely Re:Not a fan (300 comments)

I think you mean stability control, not traction control. Most drivers would be in big trouble in tripod mode in what I am assuming is a hot hatch.

You will need to pull the fuse on the stability control or keep your fast driving on the track where it belongs.

Imaging being in a Chevrolet Camaro, which is billed as a fast car, that blows it's side airbags in an autocross even because it thinks it is rolling over. Modern cars with their nanny controls are ruined for any kind of motor sports.

Government Recommends Cars With Smarter Brakes

pjbgravely Re:I have an even better idea (300 comments)

I always listen the radio, it is a great way to hear about dangerous storms are closed roads.

I do observe that is a song I like comes on followed by some tricky driving I will find I missed the song completely while I concentrated on driving.

New Nicotine Vaccine May Succeed Where Others Have Failed

New Nicotine Vaccine May Succeed Where Others Have Failed

pjbgravely Re:Why would you want this? (178 comments)

I am still addicted but the thought of going back to being a 3rd class citizen keeps me from going back. I only have slight cravings when stress or needing to think clearer happens.

I was addicted to more than nicotine in cigarettes as nicotine replacement products only helped 1/2 my withdraw symptoms. Chantix got rid of my nausea, dizziness, and shaking. I only needed candy to get rid of the horrible taste in my mouth which only lasted 2 weeks. The memory problems took much longer but was worth it to not have to stand in the road.

UK Government Department Still Runs VME Operating System Installed In 1974

pjbgravely 2038 (189 comments)

I bet this is one of the systems that will have to be replaced to fix the 2038 bug. There are a lot more 32 bit UNIX systems out there.

Ringing In 2015 With 40 Linux-Friendly Hacker SBCs

pjbgravely Why the change (81 comments)

For years Slashdot has been using the term Hacker to mean someone who breaks into computer systems through a network. I know that is what the media thinks, but that doesn't make it correct.

Now suddenly they are using the old meaning of the term for people who like to make things work better by modifying hardware or software. I don't get it.

Another Election, Another Slew of Voting Machine Glitches

pjbgravely Re: Marked Paper Ballots FTW (388 comments)

What is wrong with NY's system which uses a paper ballet which is scanned but kept in case there is a problem with the electronic one? Well besides the obvious problem as your ballot is not secret because the ballets are numbered.

Ask Slashdot: Where Do You Stand on Daylight Saving Time?

pjbgravely Re:I'm not sure what bothers me more, (613 comments)

Actually I just got a new job, it only took me 20 years. Most jobs have strict start stop times to allow overlap with the other shifts. Mine is strict except on the weekend, but a 2 minute commute makes up for it. Most stores have shifts that change a lot but I couldn't sell you as $100 bill for 50 dollars.

Ask Slashdot: Where Do You Stand on Daylight Saving Time?

pjbgravely Re:I'm not sure what bothers me more, (613 comments)

I would love to see the opposite, there is way too much daylight in the summer, but very little night sky for someone trapped in first shift like I. In the winter it would be nice to have at least an hour of sunlight when you get home for snowblowing.

In the summer it would be nice to have some dark before bed. I have been forced to sleep a few hours after work so I can get some time in the dark each day.

Debian's Systemd Adoption Inspires Threat of Fork

pjbgravely Re:What? (555 comments)

I presently run Ubuntu server for my home server becouse it was quick to build a headless system with no GUI. It seems the new Ubuntu server has a GUI now and is bult for being a cloud base. Now it looks like I will have to find a new distro in 3 years.

I left Ubuntu on the desktop years ago becouse it became unusable. I went to Debian sid and let it upgrade to systemd, and so far it makes boots longer and kills the network most of the time.

VeraCrypt Is the New TrueCrypt -- and It's Better

Thanks coward, I thought that was for other projects not downloading the program it self. They sure went out of their way to hide it from my eyes.

Debian Switching Back To GNOME As the Default Desktop

pjbgravely Re:How many of you are still using Gnome? (403 comments)

My favorite DE has always been gnome. When I tried to get Gnome3 to run on 3 screens I completely failed and had to switch to Mate.

Babylon 5 May Finally Get a Big-Screen Debut

Babylon 5 May Finally Get a Big-Screen Debut

pjbgravely Re: And so it begins... (252 comments)

It was written as a 5 series arc. After the 3rd season they thought the 4th would be the last so they combined the 4th and 5th into one season. When they didn't get canceled there was noting left of the arc for the 5th season so it is fluff.

Cowards, please stop posting good stuff.

pjbgravely pjbgravely writes  |  about a month ago No mater how good someone posts, I will not up-mod a coward. There are so many of them now and almost none of them have a valid reason for posting anonymously.

Please Slashdot add a new down-mode called "coward" which can be used to say good post, I would have up-moded you if you didn't post as coward.

Hearing test

Did you ever think it might be your sound card?
I've always been able to hear high pitches no one else could, like the whine of a CRT high voltage.
Now I fail all those high frequency tests and I have been wondering if it is my real tech audio that crashes when ever there is high CPU usage.
With this story I will add a sound card and will have to retest.

I posted the above a while ago and I finally disabled the dieing realtek sound chip on my MB, and installed an SB Live 24bit PCI card.

I did a bunch of hearing test and although my hearing is reduced at above 16kHZ I can still hear up to 22kHz.

Submitting stories

pjbgravely pjbgravely writes  |  more than 8 years ago I have submitted a few stories here, and they have always been rejected. Most get axed in 15 min but one made it a whole 1/2 hour. So far none of them have been dupes. The last 2 stories I was going to submit ended up on the front page so maybe I am learning what the editors like.

Anyway, I decided to submit a poll too see how fast that got rejected. So far the poll I submitted on Sunday January 22, @05:20PM is still pending, almost 4 months. Maybe they will actually use it, but it probably got lost somewhere.

Me, Myself, and I

pjbgravely pjbgravely writes  |  more than 10 years ago This is who I am. First I suffer from Cluster headaches, a rare illness with no known cause and cure. If you would like to know more, check out my gallery on the subject. I am a hacker at heart but not quite there. I am a Linux user, I love being able to do what you want with my computer. I am unemployed with no prospects in my line of work. Change is coming soon. If I stay on-line I will try to update this when my life finally takes a turn. I am a bad speller and I didn't want to spell check this. I am a photographer but don't have a good camera. I also have and use Gravely tractors, the old cast iron two wheelers. I love them because they are made to last forever.

That's all for now,

Paul

PS I lied, I did do a spell check
