US May Disable All Car Phones, Says Trans. Secretary

portnux Re:Go for it (1065 comments)

A fellow I know has wrecked countless cars because he was staring at girls walking along the road. Perhaps we should also pass a law to prevent girls from being outside? Stupid people are going to do stupid things. You can either ban stupid people, or ban all things. Or just accept the fact that this stuff is going to happen.

MPAA Dismisses COICA Free Speech Concerns

portnux Copyright vs. free speech? (300 comments)

Others might say that our founding fathers never intended for copyrights to be a vehicle for supressing the freedom of speech. But WTF did they know?

Court Grants RIAA Summary Judgment Motions vs. Limewire

portnux Re:In Summary (is the converse also true? (170 comments)

This makes me wonder if the converse would also be true. Could the music industry through the lyrics of modern music be held accountable for encouraging violent crime? I see no obvious efforts my music publishers to control criminal activity although lyrics continue to become more and more violent over time.

iPad Isn't "Killing" Netbook Sales, According To Paul Thurrott

portnux Re:Watch the messenger (457 comments)

Well, Paul Thurrott is kind of an idiot. Anyone who can be a chearleader for M$ after having used an Amiga has got to have at least a few fasteners torqued well below specification. The iPad is not a netbook first of all and shouldn't be compared to one. He's just whining because this is a formfactor that M$ has been working on for years with nothing to show for it. Once again Apple shows that they know how to design a cool new device.

The FCC May Decide Not To Regulate Broadband

portnux Deregulation, a good thing? (279 comments)

You don't suppose this is all part of a plot to provide Google with the perfect opportunity to enter the ISP market and take it over?

Red Hat Prevails Against Patent Troll Acacia

portnux patent trolling (89 comments)

Since the entire concept of patents is to support innovation, why not give patent a specific and limited amount of time to actually incorporate their ideas and if that isn't met the patent is invalidated? This I think would at least limit patent trolling.

In Round 2, Jammie Thomas Jury Awards RIAA $1,920,000

portnux Re:Well . . . (793 comments)

And as I've said before, if you are still paying for music you are financing this travesty! Attempting to alter peoples behavior by means of destructive acts (I don't care if killing through bombs or through financially destroying them) is terrorism and if you are paying for music you are financing terrorism.
