Not if you get a gaming keyboard. Most of the Razer models register 5+ key presses at a time.

Ask Slashdot: A Cheap, DIY Home Security and Surveillance System?

putch several options (508 comments)

I use a combination of Yawcam and Vitamin D. Neither are particularly great, but they serve my needs. And they're (mostly) free. I get images emailed to me when it detects motion in my apt and I can view live video remotely from my phone or a browser (via ssh or vpn). I use the Star Trek Enterprise (NCC-1701) webcam that I got from thinkgeek.

I've been thinking about adding something to monitor and record audio too. Also, been thinking about switching to use a kinect as the camera.

I'm glad this story was posted because sometimes I think I'm too paranoid for doing all of this. This is somewhat re-assuring.

How Watchmen Killed 'R'-rated Fantasy Movies

putch Re:It was OK (771 comments)

It might be evidence of him going rogue. And maybe the Soviets would even accept that. But there's no way they'd feel compassion or sympathy for the United States considering it was US that weaponized this force. It's akin to changing the ending of Dr. Strangelove to involve world peace.

How Watchmen Killed 'R'-rated Fantasy Movies

putch Re:They had already been turned against him. (771 comments)

Spider-man's nonsense really doesn't factor into this. Why would the Soviet Union have had any compassion whatsoever for Americans getting cancer from American weapons?

How Watchmen Killed 'R'-rated Fantasy Movies

putch Re:It was OK (771 comments)

Blaming the attacks on Dr. M really doesn't make any sense though. For decades he'd been an extension of the American military...essentially a walking, talking atom bomb. Would the world have been united had America "accidentally" nuked a bunch of cities? It need to be an exterior threat like aliens. Maybe not an actual Squid and maybe not just attacking NYC, sure. But, framing Dr. M really makes no sense.

Third of Content On Popular BT Portals Are Fake

putch Re:I suggest (255 comments)

The methodology says that they monitored for new torrents via rss and immediately scraped the .torrents and processed the files. And, if you've ever tracked a category on TPB via RSS you'll know that there's a TON of spam that constantly comes in and is usually flagged for deletion and removed fairly promptly. So, really, it's more appropriate to say that a third of all .torrents uploaded to BT portals are fake.

The Great Typo Hunt

That inference could be made with or without the comma. If Mary has freckles on her face then they are probably on her buttocks too. But, I'm not sure what her donkey's coat has to do with anything.

Forced iAds Coming To OS X?

putch Re:Interesting Spin in the Summary (416 comments)

what? public kiosks? it's 2010. in 5 years most of the country will have a multicore computer with 4g wireless in their pocket and you think people will want to stand around and use a shared computer? why? to do what?

I mean, yeah, there's some spin in this article. But i've seen far far worse on slashdot. It makes a huge leap from "will apple actually do it" to "will people start installing linux" which is fairly preposterous. But it seems clear that apple is at least contemplating a version of iAds for the desktop space. and it might be something some subset of users would tolerate or embrace. However, it's kind of fanboish to just dismiss the question with some crazy kiosk talk and a "no big deal" defense of ads.

honestly though, i think the important question here is: if they have desktop iAds will they start a desktop app store? now THAT would be a big change for the consumer desktop world.

Leaving a Comment? That'll Be 99 Cents, and Your Name

putch Re:Dept of Troll Prevention.... (377 comments)

A newspaper, on the other hand, doesn't really want that and doesn't want to dedicate its services and infrastructure to hosting shouting matches.

uh...have you seen any of the opinion pages of the major papers? but, all kidding aside you're right. but at the same time so many of these outlets (especially smaller ones) have simple flat comments. even a moderately advanced system (with threads and some kind of reputation based promotion) would help solve a very large portion of the comment problems.

but charging a one time $1 fee isn't that bad of an idea.

Why IE9 Will Not Support Codecs Other Than H.264

putch Re:So, its for the DRM then... (436 comments)

I'm pretty sure that quote actually addresses the IP rights to the codecs and not the content.

However, DRM is probably a concern. But that doesn't explain why they'd exclude other codecs.

Verizon Wireless Admits to Deceptive Marketing

putch putch writes  |  more than 6 years ago

putch (469506) writes "The New York Attorney General, Andrew Cuomo, has just announced a $1 million settlement with Verizon Wireless. The issue at hand was Verizon's marketing of their BroadbandAccess and NationalAccess wireless internet service as "unlimited." According to the press release: "from 2004 until April of this year, Verizon Wireless terminated over 13,000 consumers nationwide for "excessive" use of its "unlimited" internet access plans." Verizon will also reimburse consumers for the cost of equipment purchased by those who had their accounts terminated."

putch writes "With Foleygate putting a big spot light on instant message logging and security this is probably a good time to review some of the open sources IM solutions out there. I'm sure many people inside and outside of politics are expressing a collective "oh crap, that's being logged?!?!" In particular I'd like to give a nod to my IM client of choice GAIM and it's various plug-ins. I'm sure Mark Foley wishes he had been using Off-the-Record Messaging right about now."
