rg3 (858575) writes "EuroMillions is a pan-European lottery game that consists of choosing 5 numbers from a group of 50 and 2 additional numbers from a group of 9. The odds of winning the game are 1 in 76 millions, aproximately. After 12 weeks without a winner, the accumulated price has reached 180 million euros. This is enough to make mathematical expectancy positive. In other words, it is mathematically better to play than not to play. How can this be possible? Imagine a game in which you bet 1 euro to a number among 50, and if you win you receive 20 euros. This is the usual case for lottery games. Mathematically, you would win once every 50 times, and 20 euros wouldn't compensate the 50 spent. However, if the prize was 200 euros, it would be better to play. That's the case this week. The game rules forbid accumulating prizes for more than 12 weeks, so this is the right time to play."

rg3 (858575) writes "A jugde from Santander, Spain, has acquited an Internet user who had been taken to court accused of illegally sharing and downloading songs off P2P networks. This sets an important precedent in Spain. The jugge's decision is based on the fact that the user wasn't trying to make a profit from his activities. From the original Spanish article:
There was not a agreed transaction price or other considerations except sharing, among several users, the materials they had available. In my opinion, this falls into article 31 of the Intelectual Property Law, about obtaining copies for private use without the author's consent, and the intention of obtaining an illicit benefit was nonexistant. Understanding the opposite would mean criminalizing socially accepted and extended behaviours in which there are no intentions of obtaining an illicit benefit, but private copies. All of this means in this case there has been no infraction worth a criminal sanction.
