Ask Slashdot: Unattended Maintenance Windows?

rikkards Re:Schedule some days as offset days (265 comments)

Not only that but a company that lets someone do that is shooting themself in the foot. Sooner or later 80 hour a week guy is going to leave, good luck getting someone that is
A: willing to do it coming in
B: not taking the job until something better comes along.

It's not a badge of honor, just an example of rationalization for a crappy job.

Florida Man Faces $48k Fine For Jamming Drivers' Cellphones

rikkards Re: In other news (358 comments)

Which given enough time will do absolutely zero for accidents. The problem isn't the handsfree, it is the fact you have someone paying more attention to what is being said on the other side of the phone call than actually what is happening around them. Driving should take up 100% of your attention.

Canadian Supreme Court Delivers Huge Win For Internet Privacy

rikkards Re:What's lost in the rhetoric and internet rage (112 comments)

His point is still valid as an example of where things could go if left unchecked. Don't get all high and mighty as this is a Canadian-related thread.

UK Ballistics Scientists: 3D-Printed Guns Are 'of No Use To Anyone'

rikkards Re:Untraceable (490 comments)

Hobby built implies that you find someone with the talent and expertise to do the required fabrication.
3d Printed implies you find someone who can work a mouse and download a plan from a website.

Whole different paradigm

Comcast Predicts Usage Cap Within 5 Years

rikkards Re:Caps Are Definitely Coming (475 comments)

Interesting thought though would be that if you have a content provider who is also your ISP, could that be considered monopolistic similar to what Microsoft went through with IE being included with the OS?

Sure but there also these things called pay phones. Not quite as common as they used to be but they are still around

Japanese and Swiss Watchmakers Scoff At Smartwatches

rikkards Re:Missing the point (399 comments)

They were treated like fashion accessories but not as much anymore. Apple has been its own worst enemy, they were so popular everyone and their grandmother has one so instead of being a fashion accessory they are becoming commonplace like zippers (expensive ass zippers). Ditto with Android.

Japanese and Swiss Watchmakers Scoff At Smartwatches

rikkards Re:Maybe they should ask corded phone manufacturer (399 comments)

Actually I think they are right. I don't wear a watch anymore as I have my smartphone. However if I was going to start wearing a watch it would be more like jewelry and fancy-schmancy.

BTW I still have a corded phone. Works well in a power outage/minor disaster (aka ice storm 99/Eastcoast blackout). I rarely use it but better to have and not need than to need and not have.

It's because they can't use their usual solution which is "you need to upgrade to the next version"

Ars Technica Reviews Leaked Windows 8.1 Update

rikkards Re:Nobody cares (194 comments)

Strange, the first time you log on there is supposed to be a quick tutorial showing the hover features. I decided when I built my new computer to jump to 8.1. I wouldn't have jumped to 8 though but I have to say it's fine once you get used to the changes. I do admit some of the changes left me scratching my head but I am sure if moving to another OS I would have gone through the same familiarization. With that in mind, I could see this being a point where people choose to move elsewhere since it's almost the same learning curve.

Ask Slashdot: Does Your Employer Perform HTTPS MITM Attacks On Employees?

rikkards Re:Yes they did. (572 comments)

Probably because at one point someone was looking at porn at work, a coworker sued for sexual harrasment and won.

rikkards Not surprising at all (21 comments)

None of his revelations were surprising. Granted there are probably some that got sadistic glee in doing the job but I am sure most are in it for a paycheck.

Sorry to tell you but overdubbing US made movies into French does not a culture make.

The Quebec culture is a shadow of what it once was.

Microsoft Extends Updates For Windows XP Security Products Until July 2015

rikkards Re:*sigh* (417 comments)

Should clarify that is 19000 workstations and 1000 workstations a day and increasing. We probably won't meet the deadline of April 1 we were told to meet but we will be pretty close

Ask Slashdot: Suggestions For a Simple Media Server?

rikkards Re:Raspberry PI (420 comments)

That's what I am talking about. Essentially from what I gleaned is the skip doesn't get the full data frame it only starts with the data at that specific second so until the screen changes enough or the next frame refresh you will only see the changes.

Note: terminology is probably wrong but you get my gist.

Microsoft Extends Updates For Windows XP Security Products Until July 2015

rikkards Re:*sigh* (417 comments)

For us, (approx 100,000) clients the biggest stumbling block was app compatability. 19000 in and going, we are doing about 1000 a day. Small kinks here and there but seems to be going well

Ask Slashdot: Suggestions For a Simple Media Server?

rikkards Re:Raspberry PI (420 comments)

My biggest complaint is the grey screen issue if you skip . Only issues I playing files otherwise is it stutters on a literal 1080p rip of blu-ray.

Got bored at work (no surprise there) and went looking at my stats on /.

Suprisingly I have 2 fans. Hi Fans! Colour me flattered.

My question is why? What could I have possibly done to get me to deserve this? Ok maybe I am putting too much into this but makes me wonder...

P.S should I be worried about this post to my journal going down on my permanent record? My parents and teachers used to threaten me with that in school and fat lot of a difference that made :)
