Apple's iPod Classic Refuses To Die

rikkards Re: Wrong conclusion (269 comments)

Surprised they are allowed to bring them into the area. Granted it has no camera but it is a perfectly viable usb storage device. Our areas bringing any govt owned electronic devices without it being approved by our designated security officer is a no-no. Personal devices would be considered verboten from the get-go

Court Orders Uber To Shut Down In Spain

rikkards Re:too late (280 comments)

Only problem is there will probably be a clause in the person's insurance contract stipulating vehicle not to be used for work other than going to and leaving work to go home.
Uber would be considered working
Odds are the insurance company would balk and claim they don't have to pay out to anyone. It would go to court and ultimately they would lose, problem is after that the driver has been dropped for insurance and no insurance company would touch him

Australian Target Stores Ban GTA V For Depictions of Violence Against Women

rikkards Re:Why only women? (310 comments)

This was my whole point, the problem is that a lot of the organizations that are pushing the domestic abuse awareness have also been linked to having an anti-male agenda.

Court Orders Uber To Shut Down In Spain

rikkards Re:too late (280 comments)

My question is how insurance companies are dealing with it. I am pretty sure if I was a driver and got in an accident they would pretty much drop me like a hot potato. Unless your insurance policy includes driving as part of working there is no bloody way I would even think of taking this on.
This isn't even taking into account being sued by your passenger and what that could entail

Australian Target Stores Ban GTA V For Depictions of Violence Against Women

rikkards Re:Why only women? (310 comments)

It always irks me when domestic violence is attributed to violence against just women. There are estimates that it is pretty much 50/50 for both genders but men don't report it. Also usually if it is against men and the assailant is a woman there will be weapons usually leading to more severe damage

What Canada Can Teach the US About Net Neutrality

rikkards Re:The CRTC... (80 comments)

Except a la carte will end up costing you more for what you actually want. The cable companies have always been ok with a la carte but CRTC was pushing it for the multicultural aspect. Pretty much most of the french channels wouldn't be here if alacarte was allowed.

Windows 10 Gets a Package Manager For the Command Line

rikkards I get humor out of this (230 comments)

"It's a missing feature Linux advocates have long used to argue against Windows in terms of automation and scale."

As head of our distribution department with 100,000 Windows machines under us I find that slightly inaccurate.

No More Lee-Enfield: Canada's Rangers To Get a Tech Upgrade

rikkards Re:Enfield .303? Wow!! I know these rifles. (334 comments)

Getting my gun license in a couple months and it is on the list of guns I want. I spent a week up north working with the Canadian Military and a bit with the Rangers and I enjoyed it immensely. They get an allowance to purchase their own equipment. Once out on the tundra they revert to the traditional garb as they found the high-tech stuff doesn't work well.

BlackBerry Launches Square-Screened Passport Phone

rikkards Re:As a BlackBerry user (189 comments)

They went into the consumer market because Apple (and Android)started eating their lunch. The amount of people who can live with their "toys" as a primary work phone is more than the amount that Rim needed/needs to survive. They were trying to plug the dike and stop people from moving over.

Not Just Netflix: Google Challenges Canada's Power To Regulate Online Video

rikkards Re:I was hoping for 1) and 2) (109 comments)

Think of it more as a kid moving out of their parent's house at the age of 22 and saying that they still love their parents. The US was more of a 5 year old leaving home against the parents will while flipping them the bird.

Personally I see the CRTC as the same as Quebec's Language Police but on a grander scale: trying to keep Canadian Culture (for whatever that is) alive, when it's pretty much a known fact that culture is a living breathing thing and no matter what you do you can't stop it from evolving.

Apple Outrages Users By Automatically Installing U2's Album On Their Devices

rikkards Re:It's not your phone (610 comments)

My guess is they went the way they did was that it is a one time modification to the database to mark it as purchased. If a new person comes on they don't get the album free. Setting it to $0 for only existing users would be probably more difficult.
I understand what they did but I think it kind of backfired for them.

Fans??

rikkards rikkards writes  |  more than 8 years ago

Got bored at work (no surprise there) and went looking at my stats on /.

Suprisingly I have 2 fans. Hi Fans! Colour me flattered.

My question is why? What could I have possibly done to get me to deserve this? Ok maybe I am putting too much into this but makes me wonder...

P.S should I be worried about this post to my journal going down on my permanent record? My parents and teachers used to threaten me with that in school and fat lot of a difference that made :)
