How loud is your primary computer?

rinoid Re:Damned Intel Graphics Cards (371 comments)

Well the GPU has to vent the heat... I use MBA 2011 as primary and it's absolutely the best computer I have ever owned. The end. The best until I upgrade it later this year.

Hello, I'm a Mac. And I'm a $248 Win8 PC.

rinoid Re:I can assure you... (642 comments)

Yeah, I agree with this general pattern. Most people don't care and just need to be able to shop the web, use email, and store a bunch of photos they'll most likely lose when the hard drive crashes. Hopefully they've subscribed to a cloud backup, or invested in one of those inexpensive USB drives as a backup. I just wish Windows had something as nice as Time Machine on OSX. Seems all the folks I advise get stuck on backup software, wind up installing something when I'm not around that usually includes some spyware disguised as anti-virus and the entire machine slows to a crawl.

Yeah, I use my MessagePad 2000 all the fucking time too, but mostly my eMate stands in as the winner.

Ask Slashdot: Do You Find Self Tracking Useful Like Stephen Wolfram Does?

rinoid Nope (139 comments)

Here's the deal -- it's interesting as a sample. You might extrapolate a lot from his data. For a better sample tools just aren't there, except are they? A smartphone knows everything about your habits. I have been tracking any walk, jog, cycle, hike, or paddle I take with an app on my smartphone for about two years. Guess what I found out? I don't care enough to do anything with the data. I'm fit, I'm healthy and happy, I'm not an obsessed athlete. I get the idea and the nerdgasm of data, but I it doesn't help me enjoy life more.

Third-Generation Apple TV Lands With a Thud

rinoid Re:Meanwhile? (222 comments)

You are right, I am caught in some amount of hyperbole! My point stands. With a cash on hand of some 97billion dollars, a Roku $50million dollar IPO is meaningless. Roku has no long term future, about as much as Groupon.

Third-Generation Apple TV Lands With a Thud

rinoid Meanwhile? (222 comments)

> Meanwhile, Roku is gearing up for a $50M IPO, so this cord-cutting story is far from over." Wow! You mean Roku might be worth a speculative 50m? Apple has nearly a trillion dollars IN THE BANK. Think on that a moment. This post is junk. AppleTV has made an incremental step forward, not bad for a hobby.

The Specter of Gasoline At $5 a Gallon

rinoid Re:This is an americano-centric joke (1205 comments)

Agreed. I didn't count the unattached garage and unfinished basement but it's space and it's used. And the yard just big enough to not be a hassle and can produce some food and lovely perennial gardens even in our Zone 5b area.
This house will be like a palace when our kids leave.

My neighbor grew up in his house, virtually identical to ours, with 5 other siblings!! He's 70.

The Specter of Gasoline At $5 a Gallon

rinoid Re:This is an americano-centric joke (1205 comments)

Yeah, being 'merican means tearing down the old, building new, cheap crap, abandoning centers, moving out into the newest 'burbs house fungus, and being in perpetual debt. Just like American Corporate interests are only focused on the current and next quarter's perceived performance so too is the 'merican dream frittered away in short term perceptions of luxury.

Me? I live in a small by 'merican standards house of a mere 1700 sq ft that many would call a starter home. Guess what? Debt free with a load of cash invested and many fancy internet connected devices from which I prove that all the wrong people on the internets are wrong.

It's Alive (almost): Google Fiber for Communities

rinoid rinoid writes  |  more than 4 years ago

rinoid (451982) writes "It's long been a topic of discussion: what is Google going to do with all that "dark fiber" they bought up? Along side the many dupes and discussions there was probably speculation along the lines of today's announcement on the Official Google Blog http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2010/02/think-big-with-gig-our-experimental.html

They say: "We're planning to build and test ultra high-speed broadband networks in a small number of trial locations across the United States. We'll deliver Internet speeds more than 100 times faster than what most Americans have access to today with 1 gigabit per second, fiber-to-the-home connections. We plan to offer service at a competitive price to at least 50,000 and potentially up to 500,000 people."

How will you pitch your city?"
