Not All USB Power Is Created Equal

rjr162 Re:Apple vs. Other Devices (240 comments)

I also have a 1.5A cigarette light.. errrr "Power Port" charger that will charge my gt-i9300 S3 just fine but will NOT charge my wife's international Note II. It will for a short while if she's using it, then the phone will start making the charger connected sound over and over. The only way for it to charge her phone is to turn the phone off. The Note II just pulls too much power with the screen, battery etc and seems to overheat the charger. (Not that I'd expect this to happen with an iPhone but thought I'd share)

But I don't see how that really applies here....

Poll Shows That 75% Prefer Printed Books To eBooks

rjr162 Re: I agree (312 comments)

Same with me... PDF manuals are great but I print the sections I need and highlight, or read the PDF while copy/pasting or typing the sections I need and printing my version out.

Same deal with when I do remote starts. So much easier to have a hard copy on hand than messing with a PDF or website on a damn laptop or handheld

Are Booth Babes Going Away? (Video)

For some reason I find well dressed business looking women more attractive than the same girl in say a bikini. Not that I don't like bikinis!

TiVo Series 5 Coming This Fall

rjr162 Re:I guess I'm confused but... (178 comments)

Ah okay I figured it out.. they mean ONLY digital connections on the unit its self, NOT just OTA digital only (so no RCA connectors etc). I think the line I quoted above could have been stated that a little better

TiVo Series 5 Coming This Fall

rjr162 I guess I'm confused but... (178 comments)

"One model of TiVo’ s new all-digital DVRs would include ATSC over-the-air reception capability; this model, therefore, requires waiver of both the DCR Rules and Section 15.117(b)’s dual analog/digital tuner requirement."

Why does it need a waiver of the rules and Section 15.117(b) when all OTA broadcasts (and pretty much all other forms of broadcast) are now digital and not analog? I mean the FCC mandated the analog to digital OTA switch over... I guess I'm just really confused or our government is really that SLOW and/or doesn't know what the heck the other sections are doing even when it's plastered all over the news... ??

New Drugs Trail Many Old Ones In Effectiveness Against Disease

rjr162 Re:So what? (230 comments)

not quite, because how do you *know* it's the best way? You don't. it's just the best way of the ways you know, but there are many unknown ways of which some could be better.

For your example: "It's like having a screwdriver and then trying to invent a hammer that's different from a screwdriver but does the same thing."

It'd be more like "It's like having a screwdriver and then trying to invent something that's different from a screw driver but does the same thing, such as an electric drill or screw driver, and then beyond that a cordless drill or screw driver"

Cockroaches Evolving To Avoid Roach Motels

We saw some down in Myrtle Beach. Being that the wife already hates them (and spiders) it made for an amusing time sitting outside at this one "bars" patio enjoying a beer when one ran up the chair beside her!

The Days of Cheap, Subsidized Phones May Be Numbered

I did Google.. And it's a dual Core 1GHz... Hardly impressive for the price (I paid $600 for a Note II off of Newegg for the wife)

Why Your New Car's Technology Is Four Years Old

rjr162 Re: Not to mention... (455 comments)

No, you can replace them. The S40 (or is it the 60 I forget) not really because of the gap behind the display but there's still a double din sized unit in the dash.

And as for the integration, pac, scosche , idatalink and others make integration kits that allow you to install a new radio while retaining the factory functionality. This even applies to fiber optic systems like in the Mercedes and BMW.

I've dealt with this stuff for over 13 years now professionally (although I have to admit I do like doing remote starts a lot more than audio stuff)

Why Your New Car's Technology Is Four Years Old

rjr162 Re:Reliability needs (455 comments)

A lot of companies used a small HD inside to store system info and nav data (even in the after market units) and used the data from the DVD to update the firmware and maps on the hard drive.

Of course there were also those that ran off of the DVD and RAM memory (one such unit is my way old by this point Pioneer AVIC-N3 that's still chugging away). Others like some of the Eclipse and higher end Pioneer units back in the mid 2000's stored the info on a hard drive for faster access and no need to mess with discs. I think even Alpine had a HD based add-on nav unit around the same point, but don't quote me on that I forget. But seeing that both Eclipse (Fujitsu 10) and Pioneer are large OEM supplies.. as well as Alpine but like I said I can't remember if they did offer one or not after market... if there were an increasing amount of hard drive based setups as OEM in the mid 2000's

Metra and others make custom fit kits (yeah they cost more than your standard $20 normal style kit). They're out there and do a real good job of keeping the factory fit and finish

Why do you have to read the service tag? It can usually be found in the bios or even via their website if you open it in IE
