Audience Jeers Contestant Who Uses Game Theory To Win At 'Jeopardy'

robably Re:3 Day Old News (412 comments)

On the contrary; it's the most entertaining thing to happen to the show in years and has everybody talking about it. I bet the show's producers love him.

How loud is your primary computer?

And as if that isn't enough, I've just noticed my beer's on the other side of the room.

How loud is your primary computer?

robably Re:Sadly... (371 comments)

Depends what kind of tinnitus you have. I have a 16KHz whine in my left ear that I can tune out during the day with music but is intolerable at night. A loop of crickets/cicadas/running water helps mask it (partly because you're concentrating on a noise outside your head), but it'll still take me several hours to get to sleep and I'm tired all day. I haven't had a decent night's sleep in 20 years. One of my favourite things used to be sitting in a quiet room, now it's torture.

Geeks For Monarchy: The Rise of the Neoreactionaries

robably Re:First sandwich (730 comments)

You really think women and the lower classes have inferior brains to upper class men? White upper class men are responsible for many inventions but it's not because whites, the upper classes, or men are inherently more intelligent - it's because historically they were the ones in the positions of privilege that gave them the education and time and resources to be able to invent. Women and the lower classes had no opportunity to be inventors - their lives were controlled and they had no access to scientific education or resources - until recently when that changed and we started seeing an explosion of inventions and discoveries by women, and the lower classes could go to university and become scientists, for example.

NOBOTS Chapter One

robably Just ordered mine... (7 comments)

Just ordered mine - after fighting with the Lulu website.

For anyone in the UK having trouble registering with the Lulu website it turns out your postcode needs a space in the middle or it won't be accepted as valid, i.e. "LP6 7GH" instead of "LP67GH".

Looking forward to it.

Ask Slashdot: Asynchronous RAID-1 Free Software Backup For Laptops?

robably Re:Time Machine (227 comments)

Eh? Over 15 minutes? Are you backing up to an AirPort Disk rather than a wired disk? The bottleneck there would be the wireless, not your computer.

I backup a 2012 MacBook Air every evening to a 1TB 5400RPM USB drive - plug it in, it detects it, and the backup is done in 3 minutes.

Reconciling Human Rights With Ubiquitous Online Surveillance

robably Re:Worker #7567483 (133 comments)

No they won't. In the future there will be superintelligent ants and they'll have ant passports and ant driving licences and ant credit cards and they'll be tied in to the same mortgages and travel restrictions and limits on their freedom as we have now. And the ant queen will be a figurehead and the real power will lie with the spiders.

So be nice to your spiders.

Yahoo Buys UK Teen's Smartphone News App

robably Re:Another step in Yahoo's demise (88 comments)

Literally. It doesn't mention it in the article but on the BBC teatime news it said Yahoo had paid "dozens of millions of pounds" for the app, as well as hiring the kid. So somewhere over 24 million pounds, or 36.5 million dollars.

I'll just spell that out: THIRTY SIX AND A HALF MILLION DOLLARS.

Words fail me.

Hallowe'en is coming. Trick-or-Treaters who visit ...

robably Re:They will see... (437 comments)

You know by acting that way you're creating a situation you obviously hate - sitting in a dark, silent room hoping nobody rings your doorbell. Fuck that. Buy a bowl of sweets & a gorilla mask & have some fun when the Trick or Treaters come - RAAAAaaaar! - you'll end up looking forward to the doorbell ringing instead of dreading it. And after it's over - hey, you still have a gorilla mask! Everybody wins. Were you never a kid?

UK Man Arrested For Offensive Joke Posted On Facebook

robably Re:The joke in question (606 comments)

The Police, that's who.

Some busybody laid an official complaint and the police had to follow through

No, they didn't. Any rational human being would have laughed them out of the station. People say tasteless things. Move on.

UK Man Arrested For Offensive Joke Posted On Facebook

robably Re:The joke in question (606 comments)

It's not counterproductive as they see it. They want you, the public, to know that if they want to get you they will get you. They are being bullies, not custodians of the law. They already got their intended chilling effect by making an example of this guy, and now everyone will be a little more nervous about what they post online - they don't need to prosecute you as well. But they might, and if a law is being applied selectively it should not be applied at all.

Data Breach Reveals 100k Members' Plaintext Passwords

robably Re:Now do the right thing (160 comments)

Keeping it because it might be useful is trumped by deleting it because it might be used maliciously. Every extra copy of the data makes it more insecure. Is his copy encrypted? Who else has access to his computer? Can he be trusted with it?

If you see someone's diary lying open you do not take photographs of it. If you find someone's data exposed you do not copy the data. It is not yours to keep.

Ask Slashdot: How Many of You Actually Use Math?

robably Re:Field dependent requirement (1086 comments)

I just have the hardest time getting used to seeing people spell math with a "s" on the end of it

It's so it balances out the word "Lego", honestly.

In the UK we have Maths and Lego. You swap the "s" over and have Math and Legos. From either side the other side looks strange and frightening and it makes you wonder how the people on the other side can get through a day while being so WRONG, but seeing as Math(s) and Lego(s) are two of the most wonderful things on Earth I say just accept it and move on.

Nanoparticle Completely Eradicates Hepatitis C Virus

robably Re:Easy (104 comments)

why are we worried about this if the only ones who will really benefit are drug users?

What a cunt. They're human beings.

You think people who take drugs don't deserve to live? Fine. Go and live in a world without all the music, books and films created by drug users. No more Rolling Stones for you. No more Burroughs. No more Blake or Shelley. No Hunter S Thompson. No Carl Sagan. None of the beauty and insights and technical leaps forward that people who take drugs have given the world.

In fact, no more computers for you. Piss off.

Man barred from being alone with daughter after informing police of porn on PC

robably robably writes  |  more than 2 years ago

robably (1044462) writes "A man who informed police when he found child abuse images on his computer has not been allowed to be alone with his daughter for four months.

Nigel Robinson from Hull said he called police after trying to download music but instead finding pornographic images on his laptop last November.

As a result social services said he "should not have unsupervised access with his own or other children"."

My Name Is Earl Movie

robably robably writes  |  more than 5 years ago They _cancelled_ My Name Is Earl? What were they THINKING? That series had legs, it could have run and run. They could have brought in other TV series like CHiPS and The Dukes Of Hazzard and made them all part of he same "in-series-reality-continuum-thingy". Hell they could probably even do a cross-over with the X-Files and wind up with an excellent My Name Is Earl where Randy is running around with an E.T. in a shopping trolley trying to save him from the authorities.

No, I was heading somewhere else... MOVIE!! There needs to be a My Name Is Earl ZOMBIE MOVIE!!! Just film it, throw everything in it, don't even get the budget first, just steal some cameras and film it NOW!. Think of the plot AFTERWARDS, work backwards, think of an exciting scene - Earl gets run over by a herd of stampeding elephants, OK now you need Randy before that to say "Oh no. The zoo has escaped! I mean, the animals from within the walls of .., the elephants are escaped!!!" Then cut that in before and you've got a SCENE, a couple more of them and you've got a MOVIE. But it should be about Zombies, the elephants are just a dramatic aside like they have in films, like those old black and white war films when World War II people with goggles say "War is Hell. It sure is. Damn. Damn." and then elephants sweep across the German tanks, that kind of thing.

So there's a movie, there's a big PRÉMIÉRE (with an accent over every letter of the word "Premiere" because "One looked good, two looked even better, so we thought, what the Hell!") where Jason Lee strides out wearing a huge black and white vertically-striped suit, smoking a cigar and driving a Monster Truck. There are streamers coming down from the buildings either side like a motorcade, lights shining up in the sky so bright they're contacting Alien life we haven't even met yet, there's Lou Ferrigno! Just because we can! And the world is ALIVE!!!!

And after the movie, when the series gets re-commissioned, there'll be an episode where Earl says to Randy "Yeah, do you remember when you sawed that head off that zombie by accident when you were fishing in the Crab Shack fish-tank with one hand and holding a running chainsaw in the other and felt something icky in the fishtank so you went Urgh! and swung around and just happened to catch the Big-Ass lead zombie's head and it whipped around in to the fan and you didn't even notice you did it?", and Randy would say "No." and Earl would say "Yeah, you know, during the big zombie invasion." and Randy would say "Huh?" and Earl would say "What?" "You don't remember the big zombie invasion? When all the helicopters and SWAT teams arrived and when Catalina died? Uh-huh! Catalina DIED! And then she was brought back to some kind of un-dead life by the guy with the big green water-tank thing in his basement and now we have to skirt around calling her Zombie-Catalina because she gets touchy about it and bites off and eats parts of people she shouldn't? The biggest thing that ever happened in Camden?" Earl looks around the bar, "What, Nothing?" Suddenly quizzical, "Well it does sound kind of weird now I say it out loud. Hmm." And that would be the last you'd hear of it. Except there'd be one time in the Crab Shack when Darnell mentions zombies by mistake and laughs and everyone is suddenly silent and looks around and then down at their beer and Darnell goes "OH, uh, whoops." and everyone shuffles away.

And if there was any way to get Hurley from Lost in there, I would make it happen. He is the best thing to happen to television in forever.
