Scientists Cryo-Freeze Coral Reef

robow Re:IANACS, so could someone explain? (130 comments)

Not long ago I saw a documentary about the evolution of coral. It discussed how there are only a handful of species and the rest are a hybrid mix of those. They explained how these "true" corals were very resilient and could survive when others died off; then when conditions permitted the other hybrids would return. They also discussed how ocean levels aided in the propagation of the corals, and allowed them to spread.

Scientists Cryo-Freeze Coral Reef

robow Re:Too late :( (130 comments)

Here is a cool trick, in the Summer take a hand full of M&M's, dive to the bottom of a pool and take a look. If you have more than about 4 feet of water over you you will not be able to tell the red from the blue. Red wavelengths of light are generally filtered out after a meter or so of water. The deeper you go the more color gets lost.

$50,000 To Solve the Most Complicated Puzzle Ever

robow Occupy Wall Street (180 comments)

Just another example of college kids not getting paid enough for their skills. A puzzle solver fresh out of college should be making three times that at least.

AT&T's Metered Billing Off By Up To 4,700%

robow Re:How is this different? (250 comments)

Another problem here in the US, like said before, we lack choice. Where I live my choices are TW cable or ATT, with those options they can both screw me knowing that the other option is no better.

Won't metering internet usage be very damaging to companies like Netflix and youtube that rely on people using the internet to do things like watch movies?

Your Face Will Soon Be In Facebook Ads

But, is it facebook that is using the image or is it the advertising company? I think facebook may have to re-issue their terms and conditions to cover their 6 on this.

BFG Exiting Graphics Card Market

robow So long BFG (108 comments)

With so many companies making identical cards for nearly identical prices, eventually a few of them were bound to drop out due to loss of profit. It is a shame it had to BFG to drop out first. Their cards held up to noob overclocking very well.

Microsoft Warns of Windows 7 Graphics Flaw

robow Was this warning nesicary for microsoft? (262 comments)

Before Microsoft issued this warning, how many people had found the flaw, and now that they have told the world about how many people know? Would it have not made more sense for them to silently patch the issue and not tell every person that has access to the internet? Or are they just covering their "six"?

Razer, Valve, and Sixense Working On Motion Control For PC Games

robow Re:Casual Gaming (126 comments)

You would still have to get an alignment, an alignment does more than center the wheel it adjusts the steer wheels on the car, wear causes the wheels to go to an incorrect caster and camber angle.

US Marine Corps Bans Social Networking Sites

robow Re:You can shoot people, son, but don't blog! (202 comments)

I believe you are mostly correct While I was stationed at MCAS Mirimar There was a huge problem with every one always being on thease sites all the time. You get the few slackers that don't want to do anything and every time they get a chance they sneak off and jump on myspace. So i think it is good that they are going to try and stop this it needs to be done. People don't raise there kids with the idea that you work at work not play. Also Being a Marine I believe in shoot first ask questions later.

How do I get the job where I think of things to test to see if they do random other things and how much does it pay. I would like to start by seeing if removing the lid from my polar pop produces microwaves so that I can cook my under cooked gas station hot dog.

2TB 7200 RPM

robow robow writes  |  about 5 years ago

robow writes "Hitachi has become the first manufacturer to ship 2TB 7,200RPM hard drives. You may be wondering how that can be, but it's true. While Western Digital launched the first 2TB hard drive, it was only 5,400RPM. The new 2TB Deskstar 7K2000 should prove to be a strong performer. The drive uses 5 platters, which means that each platter stores an impressive ~400GB of data. The drive uses Hitachi's perpendicular magnetic recording to cram all of that data into such a small space. The new drives will ship with 32MB of cache and a standard SATA 3Gb/s interface. The higher rotation speed, large cahce, and SATA connection should help this drive become one of the leading storage devices available in its storage capacity category. While Hitachi has stated that this new drive is now shipping, there was no information released about how soon it will appear on retailer's shelves, nor how much it will retail for."
