With Cinavia DRM, Is Blu-ray On a Path To Self-Destruction?

rootnl International service (429 comments)

The only reason that streaming services haven't completely phased out Blu-rays is the fact that a majority of the consumers don't have a fast and reliable Internet connection.

Also the fact that Netflix and Vudu is only available in the USA. The rest of the world still rely on physical media.

Microsoft To Shut Down App Store For Windows Mobile

rootnl Re:forced user (154 comments)

After passing the problem through marketing, designers and handing it over to the project manager, who in return ordered a project leader, I can confirm your problem is solved. You will now be able to use the keyboard on your mobile to enter text on your computer.

Ask Slashdot: What To Do With Spammers You Know?

rootnl Forwarding Rule (333 comments)

I had the same problem with some of those "product news" type emails. What I do is go to their website and get their sales email, send a test email to it, just to check for auto responders. Then, create a forwarding rule to forward all their email they send me, to their sales department email (making sure to exclude any auto responders) and delete the original email. Gives you a warm feeling.

Europe Plans To Ban Petrol Cars From Cities By 2050

rootnl The real problem (695 comments)

Why don't we just address the real problem, overpopulation. Ban procreation (but not the act, just the result).

Actually it caught some users off-guard and resulted in the ban hammer to hit hard. The COD black ops forums exploded since yesterday with complaints of people being banned.

Why Linux Is Not Yet Ready For the Desktop

rootnl Hardware (1365 comments)

Some of the big problems are wifi, bluetooth, sound and video related. Most of these problems are a result of proprietary drivers/hardware. I have problems with bluetooth that my keyboard won't connect after a reboot. Configuring the spdif raw output is a pain(eventually got it running properly with a custom .asound configuration). Cheaper sound cards only support one channel, thus causing one application to block another (there are workarounds, but even for the tech-savvy this is a pain). Video support, you are at the mercy of the hardware.

For me, Linux is ready for the desktop, it's just that some hardware's not ready for Linux.

VLC 0.9.9, The Best Media Player Just Got Better

rootnl Audio problems (488 comments)

VLC lately has had some big audio issues. On OS X as well as Ubuntu it hijacks the audio preventing access for other programs (flash, iTunes). It is quite annoying and I hope they've fixed it in this release.

Handset Vendors Plug Micro-USB Charge Ports

rootnl Will they really? (363 comments)

What prevents them from still requiring a proprietary signal from the usb port or psu to put the device in charge mode. Hence requiring a "certified" power source. Take for instance the PS3 controller, it doesn't charge from a regular mini usb power supply.

All-electric Cri-Cri has maiden flight

rootnl rootnl writes  |  more than 3 years ago

rootnl (644552) writes "The all electric Cri-Cri, jointly developed by EADS Innovation Works, Aero Composites Saintonge and the Green Cri-Cri Association, made its official maiden flight at Le Bourget airport near Paris on Thursday, Sept.

"The aerobatic plane incorporates numerous technologies such as lightweight composite structures that reduce the weight of the airframe and compensate for the additional weight of the batteries, four brushless electric motors with counter-rotating propellers that deliver propulsion without CO2 emissions and significantly lower noise compared to thermal propulsion, and high energy-density Lithium batteries."

Lets hope the it doesn't sound like its name."

Windows is 'collapsing,' Gartner analysts warn

rootnl rootnl writes  |  more than 6 years ago

rootnl (644552) writes "In a presentation a Gartner-sponsored conference in Las Vegas, analysts Michael Silver and Neil MacDonald said Microsoft has not responded to the market, is overburdened by nearly two decades of legacy code and decisions, and faces serious competition on a whole host of fronts that will make Windows moot unless the software developer acts.

"For Microsoft, its ecosystem and its customers, the situation is untenable," said Silver and MacDonald in their prepared presentation, titled "Windows Is Collapsing: How What Comes Next Will Improve."

Dutchconsumer boycott against Windows Vista.

rootnl rootnl writes  |  more than 6 years ago

rootnl (644552) writes "Here in The Netherlands the Dutch Consumer bond is calling for a consumer boycott consumer boycott against Windows Vista.

The Dutch Consumer Bond (Consementenbond) is an organization that tests products for quality and safety. Recently they had an internet poll about the problems experienced with Windows Vista. About 4200 complaints were submitted of which 59% is software problems, 46% hardware peripheral problems, 34% complaints about bad performance and computer crashes, 17% about network problems, especially wireless networks and 12% complained about long startup times.

The results were publicly published and subsequently picked up by the press. Microsoft was not very happy about this and complained about the fact that they (Consementenbond) published the information instead of dealing directly with Microsoft.

Last Thursday, the two parties had a meeting to discuss the problems resulted from the poll. In the meeting, the Consumer bond insisted that Microsoft must help consumers having problems with Vista by offering Windows XP. Microsoft refused with a big no. Because of this, the Consumer bond is calling a consumer boycott against Windows Vista.

Microsoft Netherlands will issue a press statement today about the actions of the Consumer bond."

rootnl (644552) writes "Recently I decided to upgrade my email server with better spam detection and decided to use SORBS dnsbl.sorbs.net blacklist. It is a very aggressive blacklist and could be deemed quite effective. However I discovered two totally legal servers beeing blocked by their Spam 'o Matic service. One a Google Gmail server, nf-out-0910.google.com[64.233.182.185] and the other a ISP called Orange, smtp-4.orange.nl[193.252.22.249]. Now normally one would think these providers would probably get themselves de-listed, but the process provided revolves around donating money. As I just happen to have a friend that is using the said ISP, I have to seriously reconsider using SORBS. What is your experience with SORBS? What will happen if somebody start to sabotage Gmail or any other mail service by forwarding spam to one of SORBS spamtrap servers? What would you suggest as better blacklist service?"
