Oklahoma Moves To Discourage Solar and Wind Power

"Right to a profitable business model" slowly becoming enshrined in US law one step at a time. Give the corporations another couple decades and USA Inc. will be making Russia and China look good by comparison.

runeghost Here's a trick: Don't live in the U.S. (389 comments)

Sure, the 'best' schools are there, but who cares if you're walking the edge of malnutrition in order to pay for class, gas, and books? Emigrate to an actual civilized country instead of a pretend one.

Dell is blaming a (quality) product they don't like for their own failings. Dice (and its supporters) are blaming unhappy Slashdot users for the problems Dice.com has created with the tone-deaf Beta.

L.A. Building's Lights Interfere With Cellular Network, FCC Says

runeghost Re:Usenet is the new Slashdot, see you in comp.mis (158 comments)

Because Beta has exposed a fatal flaw in web- based communities, ie that the current owner of a domain around which a community has formed can choose to do whatever they like, the new official Slashdot is on Usenet, at comp.misc and I hope to see you all there.

Eternal September is a free Usenet provider, with the caveat that they do not carry binary (warez+porn) groups. Head on over and get your account today, and then we'll see each other on comp.misc!

Thanks for the pointer. For those interested, there's also altslashdot.org

25% of Charter Schools Owe Their Soul To the Walmart Store

runeghost Damn the Beta, full speed ahead! (233 comments)

Please post this to new articles if it hasn't been posted yet.

On February 5, 2014, Slashdot announced through a javascript popup that they are starting to "move in to" the new Slashdot Beta design.

Slashdot Beta is a trend-following attempt to give Slashdot a fresh look, an approach that has led to less space for text and an abandonment of the traditional Slashdot look. Much worse than that, Slashdot Beta fundamentally breaks the classic Slashdot discussion and moderation system. If you haven't seen Slashdot Beta already, open this ] in a new tab. After seeing that, click
here to return to classic Slashdot.

We should boycott stories and only discuss the abomination that is Slashdot Beta until Dice abandons the project.

We should boycott slashdot entirely during the week of Feb 10 to Feb 17 as part of the wider slashcott
Moderators - only spend mod points on comments that discuss Beta Commentors - only discuss Beta http://slashdot.org/recent - Vote up the Fuck Beta stories

Keep this up for a few days and we may finally get the PHBs attention. Links of note:

California Bill Proposes Mandatory Kill-Switch On Phones and Tablets

runeghost Re:The Beta should have a killswitch! (341 comments)

Except their comments to date indicate that giving the users any sort of choice between the two is the last thing they're going to do. If Dice.com would make a credible (or, indeed any) statement that they do intend to give readers and posters a choice between formats I suspect much of the hullabaloo would rapidly evaporate.

I also can't help but wonder if there's some common experience of running into the evils of corporate-speak among those of us strongly reacting to the Beta.

Oh, but the guy whose friend owns the snazzy car assures you that he'll let his friend know all about the problems you've pointed out, and that they'll get those pesky little things like wheels, windshields, and doors fixed before they have the perfectly functional car towed away. Doesn't that make you feel better?

Slashdot Beta Woes

runeghost Why is this not on the front page? (16 comments)

Seriously. All my personal kvetching aside, this is a serious, well-written and respectful response to the very real issues and worries raised by the Slashdot Beta. That it is not on the front page is more troubling than the Beta itself.

US cord cutters getting snubbed from broadcaster's olympic coverage online

runeghost Like Slashdot users getting snubbed by the Beta? (1 comments)

Perhaps the comparison isn't perfect, but the point remains. Saying, "We're going to redesign the whole site" is a terrible way to make changes to a mature & successful community like Slashdot. And responding to criticism of that decision with, "I'm sure we'll take your thoughts into account when we do it anyway" is an even worse way to double-down. Thus, the Slashcott.

I just took a look at it (beta) again, and I can't even read summaries because there's not enough room to display them. The information density is terrible. But what's even worse than the Beta itself is what it reveals about the priorities of whoever greenlit it.

Prosecutor in Aaron Swartz Case Lied About Search Warrant

runeghost runeghost writes  |  about a year ago

runeghost (2509522) writes ""Federal prosecutor Stephen Heymann engaged in prosecutorial misconduct by withholding key evidence from the defense team of Aaron Swartz, the late Internet activist's legal team alleged in a letter to an internal Justice Department ethics unit."

Assistant U.S. Attorney Heymann appears to have lied to the court and ignored his duty to disclose exculpatory evidence, so as to avoid invalidating the government's case against Aaron Swartz."
