The Web We Lost

rusl Re:Uh...it's still there, you know (255 comments)

Not all ads are the kind of thing you can block. For instance about the time the term "content" because popular we had the rise of widespread "content" that was merely a way of delivering ads or (much more significantly) the advertisers' perspective.

PS Yes I do recommend adblock and it is the one piece of software I will install on someone else's computer without asking them first. I can't stand it and am so befuddled that someone wouldn't be using it. I also use ghostery but it isn't as mandatory to me.

Automation Is Making Unions Irrelevant

rusl Re:Nirvana is when humanity does what we want to d (510 comments)

Well, we don't really know that much about the past. But saying that we are better off now and live a better quality of life is essential to our ideology of progress: lack of facts be damned.

Automation Is Making Unions Irrelevant

rusl Re:Title is misleading (510 comments)

This is all to be said in a Woody Allen voice.

Only owners should be allowed to organise! If people who do the work get organised that is EVIL!

OSHA is something that happened by itself when our benevolent corporate leadership decided to do us all one better in the name of Ayn Rand.

rusl violent or deceptive images (369 comments)

So, does it filter violent images or misleading advertisements? No? Then it isn't doing anything useful for children. Oh you mean it stops us from seeing human reproduction in all its bizarre incarnations? Gee, that's not relevant.

I want family friendly search not moral policing of a moral standard than is absurd.

DuckDuckGo time I guess.

Republican Platform To Include Internet Freedom Plank

rusl Re:long live the status quo (459 comments)

I think they already do have a pretty darn big influence on the internet. Problem is, the part they control and the way they do it means you can't get into that part. Or, more importantly, their own citizens don't get out. They got the control already. It's our job to undermine that.

Republican Platform To Include Internet Freedom Plank

rusl Re:You need a schism (459 comments)

You need more than 2 relevant parties. I think maybe you need to get rid of the primary system. No other countries have that. We don't understand how it is meant to work. It just seems like an extra filter for corruption and to weed out diversity by preventing any real debate from entering the real election by keeping it hidden at the primary level. Also it officially institutes the only-2-choices way of doing things.

Is Your Neighbor a Democrat? There's an App For That

rusl Re:Actually a Good Thing (550 comments)

A good answer to an absurd logic. We need a lot more of that these days. The problem is you used the word "balance" and there is no place for such a concept on reality television.

rusl Rebranding the Nazis as Leftists (550 comments)

"There is simply no way to assign a "national socialist worker's party" to the "right wing" within any political spectrum other than that of Europe, where everybody is so far left that a socialist can be to their right."

This kind of lying about history, or worse, genuine ignorance, is truly scary. Such a statement is like spitting on the graves of all the Allied soldiers who died in WW2. You should be ashamed.

"Those who do not learn from history are bound to repeat it." I've never believed that phrase as much as I do now, reading your Glen Beck inspired nonsense. The ignorance required to make such an outlandish claim acceptable in the public sphere is truly revolting. The thing is that with a big lie, if you repeat it enough... (on Fox News)...

Is Your Neighbor a Democrat? There's an App For That

rusl Primary System (550 comments)

My father, who is American (not me though, technically yes, but I don't live there, and it seems like a crazy place I wouldn't want to stay for all that long), thinks the Primary system makes the USA more democratic. I'm not so sure. Seems to me like a weird way for the 2 "parties" to be completely inescapable.

In Canada, when we have a terrible political party because it gets too corrupt from being in power, eventually that party gets dumped and those with that ideology have to form a new party that must embody the ideals but not the old vices. It's not perfect but it seems light-years ahead of the US 2 party system. In the US the bad old stuff just never dies all the way back to slavery.

I support the makers of this app. All they are doing is putting to use what is already out there. If we don't want those records so public we should make the change so the records aren't public that way. In a way they are highlighting a problem that needs to be solved.

Commodore 64 turns 30

rusl split focus (218 comments)

I think it has to do with the fact that as we mature we can focus our mind on several things at once. Useful, mature and sophisticated. The brain does in fact improve into middle age, youth fetishism notwithstanding. However the trade off is that memories we produce are less intense. Life is more fuzzy as our brain constantly is aware of the issue of balance rather than diving in whole hog headfirst. Youth and age both have their various benefits.

The World's First 3D-Printed Gun

rusl Re:But ... (846 comments)

>

Let's see. Colorado massacre happens Friday late.

By Saturday morning, the first editorials calling for more gun control appeared.

Yesterday, Obama called for more gun control (admittedly, he was pandering to his base, since the "more gun control" he said we needed have been existing law for 40 years or so)....

The voices are loud and fast advocating for gun control because it is an obvious need and it is upsetting to still not have it after so many decades when it was also very obvious. However, even you admit that the political will to make any of it happen isn't there. Obama and other politicians only call for this sort of thing in a toothless way.

Big Money NRA prevents sensible debate and progress - since you were a kid. The NRA takes really extreme positions. They do not represent the majority of their members even! They only succeed because armchair quarterbacks like to take extreme hypothetical positions instead of looking at the real facts.

If you really support responsible gun use you should quit the NRA and form a better organisation that actually represents its members and doesn't actively work against responsible gun use.

The World's First 3D-Printed Gun

rusl The Real NRA (846 comments)

There is a lot of rose tinted glasses and not seeing the sheep for the wolf clothing with the NRA. The NRA is very extreme and surveys of NRA members always result in much more moderate and responsible ideas of gun use than the NRA actually advocates. Just because YOU don't support shooting people/stand-your-ground etc doesn't mean the NRA backs you. Most members have a very distant idea of the policies the NRA puts into law and if they knew it better they would quit their membership!

The World's First 3D-Printed Gun

rusl NRA are extremists (846 comments)

The NRA is actually an extremist organisation that does NOT represent its membership. Look up their actual positions. Most gun owners/advocates favour responsible gun ownership whereas the NRA advocates a dangerous free-for-all approach that encourages more violent weapons and makes responsible use (like hunting) less practical. Gun owners need to start an new organisation that is not bought and sold big brother corporation owned.

rusl Fork it! (329 comments)

Let's fork it back into Google Labs! I don't care it it's made a little more technically demanding to setup.

Google should be nationalised and all the code put GPL so that we can fork things we need and they don't have to try and "monetize" away all usefulness.

rusl Re:What exactly am I suppose to replace it with? (329 comments)

This reminds me of the ridiculous article about CLI being obsolete. Progress goes backwards sometimes because people who get enticed by shiny things are in charge of making all the computers and don't know that they are de-evolving instead of progress.

Canadian Liberal Party adopts Net Neutrality

rusl rusl writes  |  more than 5 years ago

rusl writes "Canada's 2nd largest party, in a minority parliament, has now joined the NDP Party in support of Net Neutrality. This means that the CPC internet law may face insurmountable opposition if the Bloc decides not to support them. There is even potential to enshrine Internet privacy rights and net neutrality language into law for the USA's northern neighbour.

The introduction of the [strong internet surveillance] legislation by Justice Minister Rob Nicholson and Public Safety Minister Peter Van Loan — accompanied by more than a dozen law enforcement representatives -generated an immediate wave of criticism.

...

Hours later, the scene shifted to question period, where Liberal Industry critic Marc Garneau surprised Internet watchers by emphasizing the importance of an open Internet and declaring that the Liberal party now firmly supports net neutrality. The party has adopted a position opposing the management of Internet traffic that infringes privacy and targets specific websites, users and legitimate business applications. The move represents an unexpected shift in policy direction just weeks before the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission is scheduled to conduct hearings on network management practices. For months, the NDP has stood virtually alone among the major Canadian political parties in its support for web neutrality. With the Liberals onside, the door is open for a bipartisan effort this fall to enshrine net neutrality principles into law.
