GNOME 3 Delayed Until September 2010

salarelv What GNOME really needs (419 comments)

What GNOME really needs (in my mind): * better dual screen support * customizable virtual desktops (different layouts for work, entertainment etc) - would be cool if the second display could be one virtual desktop * fixed theme management (everything should be configured from one place) * "run as root" in the menu under right mouse click * "open terminal in current location" * better drag&drop * better networking configuration (usb and bluetooth modems) - like to see why something isn't working. etc gnome doesn't need new menus..these are already great. maybe a search bar for programs in the application menu. like in win7 and mac

Firefox Passes IE6 In Browser Share

salarelv Re:StatCounter etc (350 comments)

My friends are using gmail but IE was damn slow and I showed them that Firefox is way faster. Then they didn't made any stupid comments like "I like the The Intternet better" and started using Firefox gladly. We geeks have to show the benefits not just saying "it's better".

Analyst Predicts Android Overtaking iPhone In 2012

salarelv Re:Here's where it lost me (385 comments)

Many my friends who were businessmen before iPhone and Android where WinMo or Symbian users. And these people will continue to use these because they have the apps they need(ed). And like You said that there is now a store for these apps. People don't buy every day a new phone and the market has the time change to fight against Apple. Apple has to innovate to stay ahead but usually the winners stay put and don't care. Sure the iPhone is gaining but not very much from the hardcore users but from young people who care for the outfit not the functionality. iPhone will gain because it's a fashion accessory but fashion changes every year. Maybe apple will find the next big thing but that's another question.

Analyst Predicts Android Overtaking iPhone In 2012

salarelv Re:Here's where it lost me (385 comments)

WinMo will grow because smart phones gain market share. More and more people can afford a smart phone. WinMo has a lot good apps. Even more than the iPhone. These apps are for the business people who need more than a fancy outfit.

Analyst Predicts Android Overtaking iPhone In 2012

salarelv Re:Two Predictions (385 comments)

What other companies? The other companies will use Android. Apple has to innovate to stay on the top. But the iPhone hasn't innovated after the first release. Only hardware updates. Yes probably it will gain some market share the coming 2 years but when they don't come to new ideas the others will get better than Apple because there are more carriers, more hardware producers and more freedom.

HTC Hero is quite popular in Europe. I am getting one on Thuesday. Some shop keepers told that they wondered how popular it was. Also I ordered the hero two days ago and already the price went down. Also the Hero has Flash 9 support.

Initial WebGL Support Lands In WebKit

salarelv Re:Someone in the know... (181 comments)

Thank You for finding the right word. Yes, but WebGL isn't a well designed engine. You have make one which will be running on JS which isn't comparable in speed to binary or ASM programs. Google Docs is slower than MS Office or even Open Office. I can't imagine that a full JS application could replace some binary application.

Initial WebGL Support Lands In WebKit

salarelv Re:Someone in the know... (181 comments)

Yes. Exactly 03D is easier. I see problems with 3D models - You can only read txt based files with JS - and I am not sure if this works on all browsers. When You run everything (file reading, rendering, back face sculling, front face sculling etc) from JS then it will be slow. 03D and 3DMLW to it in the plugin. Which is faster.

Initial WebGL Support Lands In WebKit

salarelv Re:Someone in the know... (181 comments)

O3D still uses a plug-in. 03D is easier do develop. Its similar to 3DMLW. I haven't seen a specification for WebGL yet (Khronos Group hasn't published any). I know so much that there aren't any readers for 3D models which makes the development of games very hard. Also there isn't any logic built into it. You have to program everything. No shaders, no phyiscs etc.

3D Web solutions - the next big thing?

salarelv salarelv writes  |  more than 5 years ago

salarelv writes "The are new 3D Web engines coming up like mushrooms after a warm rain. We have also heard that Google's Lively is now dead.ly and that Microsoft wants to get the big chunk of the market again by making an "everything simulator". When it comes to interactive web there has always been mentioned Flash but Flash 10 isn't really a 3D engine as it hasn't got a hardware acceleration and you have to include a third party API like Papervision for showing the usual 3D models. Now and then I encounter stupid comments like "why don't You use VRML" and I have to reply that VRML is dead for a long time. Of course there are smaller players like: 3DMLW, Virtools, WireFusion, Vivaty and VastPark. My question is whether it is possible for an OpenSource platform like 3DMLW to survive in this kind of environment or not? We are trying to do things in a different way than others — giving the developer a similar approach like in HTML+JavaScript development chain. We also have a free beta stage editor called Quantum Hog and the player for MacOS is coming soon. We don't want to be a hyped Virtual Reality chat room but a solid development platform for any kind of cost-effective 3D applications."

3D Web solutions - the next big thing?

salarelv salarelv writes  |  more than 6 years ago The are new 3D Web engines coming up like mushrooms after a warm rain. I can point out the following ones: 3DMLW, Virtools, WireFusion and Vivaty. Why aren't Flash10 or any Flash based APIs in this list? Because Flash 10 isn't really a 3D engine and the APIs are usually slow and too big. The most interesting from this list is probably 3DMLW because of being open source, having a nice open community and trying to do things in a different way than the others. They have reached version 1.0.1 and are probably a little bit behind the others in functionality but gaining fast. Also a free editor for 3DMLW named Quantum Hog is in beta stage and up for downloading.
