Embarrassing Stories Shed Light On US Officials' Technological Ignorance

Scott Ragen Re:This is why I'm not that concerned about the NS (299 comments)

That would be even *worse* than what they're doing now. Not only have they used their reach to get data on everyone to keep us safe from "terrorism", but now they use it to catch fraudsters!

OneDrive Is Microsoft's Rebranded Name For SkyDrive

Scott Ragen Re:BSkyB didn't even have a SkyDrive (197 comments)

Agreed. On related news Livescribe has also agreed to stop using the word "sky" on its Sky pen.
BskyB owns the word "sky" how ridiculous.

PC Makers Plan Rebellion Against Microsoft At CES

And then we would see a lot of word.exe files attached to emails. As the only way some users knows how to open a word document is by opening word on the desktop, then file > open.

A Flood of Fawning Reviews For Apple's Latest

Scott Ragen Re:Poor Apple Haters (501 comments)

1. costing a lot of money.
For a workstation, yes it's pretty expensive. Why what did you think it meant?
Regardless if it returns the best ROI, it is still expensive.

Justine Sacco, Internet Justice, and the Dangers of a Righteous Mob

Scott Ragen Re:Why so much butthurt? (399 comments)

I don't know much about the subject, but I always thought it was more about wealth and less about culture. Poverty stricken (more likely native Africans) people don't have much entertainment, so sex is a way to pass the time.
Don't use condoms due to availability, or Catholics in their ears saying you will go to hell if you use a condom.
As you mention, rape & myths play a big role in infection rates too, but that can be due lower police resources in poverty stricken areas.

That's right. Blizzard.

Disabled Woman Denied Entrance To US Due To Private Medical Records

I wish my cell phone was...

Scott Ragen Re:50% dumber. (495 comments)

. With an automatic, you can only downshift a gear by stomping the pedal to the floor

So those numbers on my automatic stick saying 1,2,3 are just for show and don't actually do anything?!

In a manual, if you start going down a decent grade and you throw the car down a gear, the engine acts as a weak constant brake. A side effect of this is that you are shifting more weight onto the front wheels due to the braking action, which increases the quality of contact between the rubber and the road for steering.

My car is a rear wheel drive, so no, this is not an effect of all cars. Yet, if I use the brakes I brake with all four wheels, with more breaking at the front (as is evidenced by needing to change the pads more on the front).

Should the US Copy Switzerland and Consider a 'Maximum Wage' Ratio?

Scott Ragen Re:Wait until all Janitorial is "contracted out". (1216 comments)

But there will still be "low" lowest paid employees. Janitors are still needed - contracted or not. They cannot be outsourced. I like the idea to include contracted companies...
If a CEO wants more money, request the contractor pay their employees more, contractor requests more money to cover wages.

Researchers Use Computer-Generated 10-Year-Old Girl To Catch Online Predators

Scott Ragen Re:Making an underage sex bot (545 comments)

Child abusers are the lowest form of life. These guys had the intent to commit the crime, possibly believing it was a real 10 year old girl. They should in my opinion be in prison.

What if it had been a real girl?

Ask Slashdot: Which Encrypted Cloud Storage Provider?

Scott Ragen HP Autonomy Cloud Backup Service (200 comments)

This probably won't be a popular comment given Slashdot's DIY mentality, but why not go for an online backup system instead of cloud storage?

You stated you need it for backup, so use a backup service. They have the benefit of alerting you when backups occur and do not occur, can sync as little as every 15 minutes, provide up to 7 years of snapshots.
With block level synchronisation, it encrypts the data before leaving the server and I believe it is PCI compliant.

Android KitKat Released

Scott Ragen Re:Galaxy Nexus (358 comments)

That's disappointing. I was hoping to skip the 2 year upgrade cycle, especially for my mum who has the phone.
I bought Nexus believing it would be supported longer with quicker updates.
Why won't Google compete with Apple on longevity of phone updates? The iPhone 4 - over 3 years old runs iOS 7.

NSA Chief Keith Alexander Takes His PRISM Pitch To YouTube

Scott Ragen Re:He's being tossed to the wolves (165 comments)

No. The NSA are just getting a list of dissidents that oppose their views. Although I wonder why, I thought they already had that information.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk: Fuel Cells Are 'So Bull@%!#'

Scott Ragen Re:I'm inclined to agree (479 comments)

You do realise a "fuel cell vehicle" is also known as a "fuel cell electric vehicle? Yes, that's right they make ELECTRICITY not fuel for ICE engines.

Also, what evidence do you have to state that a fender bender would level a block? Hydrogen isn't that dangerous. Li-ion batteries explode and catch on fire too.

What Elon is saying is short sighted and arrogant.
