Hidden Obstacles For Google's Self-Driving Cars

seanvaandering Stop being so impatient.... (278 comments)

The technology is in it's infancy stages. Why the media keeps hounding Google on all these issues seems immature. I don't see any other competing company attempting to do the same thing, and if there is, they are definitely staying clear of the media spotlight.

I see Google making some great progress in this area, but give it time people - they will work out the kinks, but it won't be done in year.. lets realistically say that maybe in 5-10 years from now we might fathom the idea that the car is safe enough for whatever weather and situations we can throw at it.

When I told Gramma to type exactly that, she kept saying it wouldn't work!

You can thank the MPAA for those restrictions. I love the internet too - maybe look for another thing on the internet called a free proxy.

Study: Half of In-App Purchases Come From Only 0.15% of Players

The kicker is... the guys who's blowing $10K on a game is probably getting some kickass vacations, and probably getting them free too. Rich people comp other rich people all the time.

Study: Half of In-App Purchases Come From Only 0.15% of Players

seanvaandering Re:Free to level 20 (144 comments)

Honestly, the following list is hardly a reason to quit the game - any starter edition Level 20 can't do squat compared to a normal paying member.

You can only chat in "say" and "party".
You can't send whispers (unless the other person has a starter edition also).
You can't join guilds, trade, invite players into a party.
You can't use mailbox (in game mail). Real ID or voice chat features.
You can't participate in pet battles.
You can't gain more than 10 gold.

To be honest - the list restricts those players so much, that as a Level 90, I have never ever seen one actually in game.

Ask Slashdot: What Games Are You Playing?

seanvaandering Re:Twitch plays Pokemon (669 comments)

No not really... 100 people are competing for the next command and everyone else is watching. It's like watching 1,000 ants all trying to squeeze through the same tiny hole. Boring to watch after 10 minutes, but if that sort of thing thrills, you can run it on an emulator on your computer and then mash the keyboard repeatedly for the same effect.

Ask Slashdot: What Games Are You Playing?

seanvaandering Still playing WoW (669 comments)

But did start playing it when it was Warcraft, Warcraft II and III, then took a huge 7 year break and tried out WoW and still playing it 3 years later. I still have friends ribbing me about being a "Level 7 Bezerker", but damn that game was addicting.

Before that, of course the gamut of FPS games:

Doom, Doom II, Hexen, and Heretic.

I ran MajorBBS/Worldgroup software with a 18 line BBS system that allowed those games to go multi player. Damn those were good times. If I had the money today to set that back up I probably would again - the community and the people were amazing.

Some will be salvaged and some will be destroyed as you put it. Whatever is salvageable will be refined back into materials/minerals and sold on the market for the next battle.

Largest-Yet EVE Online Battle Destroys $200,000 Worth of Starships

seanvaandering Re:$200,000 of what? (463 comments)

No kidding. The amount of time to manufacture a Titan, the skills required to pilot it, the rigging and equipment to outfit it, its a little mind boggling when you get right into it - hell I started playing again a month ago - the skills required to even run a battle cruiser is around 45 days, titan class ships must be 90 days or even more, even with implants, and that's just to train to pilot it - those skill books aren't cheap either!

Largest-Yet EVE Online Battle Destroys $200,000 Worth of Starships

seanvaandering Re:Wow (463 comments)

Currently, as I am a miner, i've been watching this with interest - mineral prices are spiking in anticipation of the amount of minerals required to rebuild those ships. As of this writing, Tritanium is already worth 25% more in Jita IV (one of the major ports) from yesterdays ask prices.

Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 Pass 10% Market Share, Windows XP Falls Below 30%

seanvaandering Re:It doesn't matter (470 comments)

Bought my wife a brand new laptop with Windows 8.0 preinstalled for Christmas. Today I caught her back on my desktop computer when I came home from work...

"Hey honey - something wrong with your laptop?"

"No, i'm just sick and tired of it always shutting down (Windows updates to 8.1, etc, been updating every day since she turned it on) and the mouse is too sensitive (shes used to a desktop optical mouse) and I can't find my desktop! (the new interface is confusing)"

This is supposed to be Microsofts target demographic - and she already hates it, not even a full week after using it.

I almost couldn't believe that I had to download VLC because Media Player won't play DVD's because Microsoft didn't include the codecs? Why the hell did manufacturers install a DVD payer in the machine.

This Operating System sucks balls. I for one will never be upgrading my main system - ever.

Website Checkout Glitches: Two Very Different Corporate Responses

seanvaandering Re:Simple. (303 comments)

Exactly, so if I was expecting a couple dollars back in change but the machine spit out like 5 $100.00 bills, who's stopping me from walking out the door with my purchase *AND* the money. I didn't steal it from the machine - it GAVE it to me. Some righteously honest people might stop by customer service on the way out and give the store back some money, but I wouldn't - the Brick is a crooked as a company can get without being downright illegal, and to be honest - I wouldn't lose a wink of sleep over it.

It is Christmas time after all! Ho Ho Ho!!!!

Why Bitcoin Is Doomed To Fail, In One Economist's Eyes

seanvaandering Re:WD et al. (537 comments)

You have to prove to "the network" that your Bitcoin was:

1. Mined and the network agrees (confirms the transaction).
2. Not spent and the ledger agrees.

There is no "reporting" lost Bitcoins - only reclaiming what was already yours to begin with, which the network already knows - it keeps track of every transaction from the very first bitcoin mined - your lost Bitcoin is in the ledger somewhere. Which is why security is so important, because if you lose your wallet address and someone else gets it - well the Bitcoins in that wallet now become "theirs". Much in the same way a tangible $20.00 bill in your pocket is yours until you lose it. It doesn't matter that you know the serial number and every little detail about your bill, if I have it in my hand, it's mine and no one cares. Except you of course.

Next World of Warcraft Expansion: Warlords of Draenor

seanvaandering Re:I won't be back (156 comments)

So?

I'm a casual player...and i'm sure i'm Blizzards target demographic - sorry, but if all the elitists left tommorow, WOW and Blizzard would still be here and very viable based on our casual subscriptions.

To tell you the truth about Timeless isle, I honestly appreciate being able to mail 496 tokens to my other toons and get them up to speed instead of having to log in and grind them in dungeons or whatever else - I simply DON'T HAVE THE TIME to spend in game getting everything leveled up. Some of us have real jobs with families and just can't commit to the time requirements anymore. Who cares if they're purple and "epic" tokens.
