Ask Slashdot: Is iOS 7 Slow?

sheddd Re:Yep (488 comments)

Yea I've had iOS7 on a couple devices since WWDC; it wasn't painful on an iPhone 4S IMO... and it's no longer painful on a mini IMO... battery life was terrible; battery's better now that they've removed a lot of debugging stuff but still significantly worse than 6 on older devices.... I got a new iPhone, and the battery's better with iOS7 than my 4S was with iOS6... maybe some of the battery saving measures they took only work on the new chip.

Microsoft Slashes Prices On Surface

sheddd Surface Pro (330 comments)

I'm kind've a MS hater, but for some reasons I'll omit I needed a Surface Pro... I assumed it would really suck. I don't really like Windows 8 or 8.1 yet. IMO it's a nice device, and the future for some windows users. Too expensive for many today, the hardware is nice; battery life sucks, but for most executive types who use MS Office, it's pretty awesome to be able to plug it into a usb3 hub and big monitor at your office/home, and bring the thing minus the externals with you wherever.

I'm surprised Apple & Google gave them full access. I guess it's not 'direct' because it's running via fibre or ethernet :)

Aereo Ruling Could Impact Pandora

sheddd Re:Pandora needs to change technology to win. (107 comments)

So here's a business plan for pandora:

- I sign up for $x/year, pay up-front
- They record many radio channels for me, and index them by song
- After a month of recording the many channels, the amount of music they have available for me is good enough and they can just plug my library into their old algorithms and everything works fine and it's a private performance so no royalties are due.
- Profit!!

Aereo Ruling Could Impact Pandora

sheddd Re: Pandora needs to change technology to win. (107 comments)

I think as law currently stands they could record the broadcasts and give the users a nifty tool that skips over the commercials, and generally behaves as pandora does today. Maybe they need to make sure the song they think you want to listen to has actually been broadcasted since you subscribed to them.

Aereo Ruling Could Impact Pandora

sheddd Re:Pandora needs to change technology to win. (107 comments)

mmm no... If this ruling stands, all Pandora needs to do is copy Aereo... rent antennas to pandora users for $x/year, and allow them to play live radio or previously recorded live radio, and save their massive licensing expenses.

Apple's iWatch Could Come With IOS, Earn $6 Billion a Year

sheddd iWatch (327 comments)

It could make sense for Apple users (I am one).

+ Locate your other iDevices via findMyiThing and/or Low Energy Bluetooth
+ See info that you want to see on your wrist
+ Tough device (waterproof?) that can make a call or text or something

I'd buy a $100 tough watch to use as a 'backup smartphone' if it was done well.

sheddd Re:$6 Billion? Really? (327 comments)

"So, what is this watch going to *DO* that will garner more than a yawn from the general population"

It'll find your phone, dude! :) Go low energy bluetooth, go! It might find your keys and other junk too :)

"it doesn't ask you to confirm your password by typing it twice"

I like this; it irritates me when sites ask for confirmation.

US Scientific R&D Could Face Fiscal Cliff Doom

sheddd Re:Medicare and defense (609 comments)

Social Security is fully funded and what funding problems it has are fairly easy to fix

In the SSA's 2012 Trustees report they admit at present they're 31% underfunded; it's going to get much worse quickly due to age demographics unless something significant changes.

Zuckerberg: Betting On HTML5 Was Facebook's Biggest Mistake

sheddd Re:i call BS (290 comments)

They put a lot of effort into multithreading and caching stuff before you ask for it; I saw a cooler writeup and can't find it... but here's one from Facebook's Blog.

Hybrid Car Owners Not Likely To Buy Another Hybrid

sheddd Re:Diesel (998 comments)

I'm happy with my Sportwagen TDI too! I got it 6 months ago, ~8k miles so far. I'm a bit disappointed in the mileage @ interstate speeds (I need to check it without the bike rack)... I wish 6th gear was much taller.

Sure, they've measured this very exactly; due to that they can only say those measurements were true at some time between now and +/- 9e99 petabillenia.

A Hybrid Car With Detachable Engine Proposed

sheddd Why not a generator-trailer (218 comments)

Use economies of scale, use a well engineered 1L diesel with a 10 gallon tank to get most people 300miles. Keep it under 300lb dry and make it aerodynamic. When you need to drive your electric long distance, rent the trailer.

Ask Slashdot: Copy Protection Advice For ~$10k Software?

sheddd Re:$10,000 for video editing software? (635 comments)

video editing software is a mature market. unless you are making some cool plug in or your software does something really cool that the big boys don't do you are screwed

The market is in chaos; cameras are getting cheaper along with the software; Cameras capture more data (pixels, color, brightness); software tries to adapt.

If you're trying to edit something quickly and/on are doing an expensive project, $10k can be peanuts.

Show me how you're going to edit 8k resolution media.

Laser Scanner May Allow Passengers To Take Bottled Drinks On Planes Again

sheddd Re:A cheaper solution (343 comments)

I carry nalgene bottles everywhere; I just like having liquid when I want it; I got stopped @ security, I was running late, and they said I'd have to go outside to empty it out if I wanted to keep the $10 bottle; they wouldn't allow me to keep the bottle even after I drank the contents. I drive when I can instead of flying now.

What the iPad 3 Looks Like

sheddd Re:Cheaper iPad 2 (471 comments)

I pad 1 runs Infinity Blade 2 without crashes... but iOS 5 is noticeably slower sometimes. I use mine a lot; yours may be screwed up. I'm gonna keep it as long as it works (and maybe pay someone to replace the battery). It's still a nice device IMO. I reach for it before any other tool when doing some quick surfing or email checking.
