Microsoft Apologizes For Inserting Naughty Phrase Into Linux Kernel

simm_s Re:You're still not getting it, I have a right... (897 comments)

Well no you don't have the right in all cases! I am sure the employee at Microsoft signed an agreement that he would follow certain guidelines, so no he did not have the right to do this on behalf of Microsoft. Linus also has the right to accept, correct, or reject code that he does not like in his tree. You have the right to be a jackass (at least in the US) but we don't have to give you a platform.

Ask Slashdot: How Do I Stay Employable?

simm_s Do You Want The Truth? (708 comments)

The truth is that no one knows how you are going to stay employable!

We have no idea about the challenges you are facing now and will face in the future. We don't even know what lies before us in the future. The best chance you have is to make sure your lifestyle is sustainable. Make sure you get out of debt (if any) and are physically and mentally healthy. Be kind and considerate to others (even if they do no deserve it). Reduce your attachments to material things. Things do not make you happy anyway. If you are not happy with the work you are doing now, find something that interests you and gives your life purpose (life is too short).

Good luck!

Does Outsourcing Programming Really Save Money?

simm_s Poorly Written Article (653 comments)

This article has a racist subtext. I have also seen extremely unskilled programmers from the US at the > $100/hr level. There are countless federal projects that fail with cost overruns for any number of reasons. Choosing US programmers does not guarantee success. I think ultimately companies need to realize that software development is very hard and you just can't randomly hire/contract programmers and expect success. Top programmers are hard to find and expensive no matter what country look at.

Video Game Consoles Are 'Fundamentally Doomed,' Says Lord British

simm_s Convergence (374 comments)

Mobile phones are just another platform to experience gaming. Mobile platforms are becoming more like gaming consoles. With technologies like wireless display (WiDi), etc you may be able to run a virtual xbox 360 straight from a mobile device on to the display of your choice. Good times!

Is There an Institutional Bias Against Black Tech Entrepreneurs?

simm_s Re:When this racism shit ends (645 comments)

Let me guess you are white. I dare you to ask any black person if white privilege does not exist. I bet you will have a tough time finding one. But in your mind they are all liars or lazy. I hate the "black people are just lazy" narrative. It's a really tired old lie you people keep telling yourselves. :-)

How about you observe the amount of people use the n-word on this forum. Then tell me that the tech world is open. It is a sad joke.

Why Do So Many College Science Majors Drop Out?

It seems you have an agenda against Black people and fear lawsuits, but what does giving IQ tests to janitors have to do with the STEM drop out rate?

Why Do So Many College Science Majors Drop Out?

simm_s Re:Bizarre (841 comments)

You did not read that article correctly. Duke Power initially used segregation to weed out Black job applicants. When the Civil Rights Act prevented segregation they instituted IQ tests to weed out Black applicants who did not have the same education opportunities at the time. The IQ tests did not have anything to do with the job. The Civil Rights Act does not ban IQ tests.

Why Do So Many College Science Majors Drop Out?

simm_s Re:Only the strong survive, as it should be (841 comments)

I see a lot of well educated engineers coming into the field that have terrible problem solving skills. I am sure they have great grades but they can't solve their way out of a card board box. I am not exactly sure this weak student elimination thing is working out very well.

simm_s Re:The Four-Year Notion May Be Part of the Problem (841 comments)

I agree with the idea that sticking everyone into a four year program is counter productive. Problem is the longer the program the more expensive the cost is to the student.

American Grant Writing: Race Matters

simm_s Why does Slashdot post these race bait articles? (464 comments)

I don't mean to make this seem like a joke, but every time Slashdot posts about race there is a whole slew of White people coming out of the wood-works claiming that racism is not the problem? And then form a defense out of the following...

A. Affirmative Action is the problem Black people can't be trusted.
B. Black people are not smart enough and thus can't be qualified.
C. Black people score lower on academic tests, and if they did well they did not deserve the grade. See (A)
D. How come my Asian friend is so smart and you are so dumb.
E. Let me pull out my statistics textbook: if you are Black, then you are dumb. QED.

Then sprinkle it with:
A. Oh BTW I am not racist,.. racist rant..., racism is bad
B. I voted for Obama, how could I be racist?
C. I have a Black friend somewhere! I call him by the N word and he loves it. How can I be racist?
D. Look at all of the Black Athletes this proves that genetics determine everything about a person. And since Black people don't have Neanderthal DNA...
E. Oh don't mind my friends dropping the N-word on that other post. He is just an anomaly.

Then pat yourself on the back for proving that 500 years of social engineering is meaningless and get modded up. Brillant because the next article will be about how social engineering causes somebody to hand over millions of SSN to a stealthy hacker.

I think there is a sick person who posts these flame bait articles on Slashdot. I am calling you out! You post these articles and wait for hundreds of responses and then you revel in the racist commentary. It does not make sense otherwise. If Slashdot cared about race they would have auto tagged the racists or blocked Anonymous cowards spewing racial epithets.

Let me put it into perspective for you guys. If you were Black, and you had to read that the government has be rejecting your best and brightest because of your race and then log into Slashdot and read through the most offensive racist rants. You would have quite a shitty day. Now imagine that you had to interact with a bunch of people who pretend to be your friends when talking face-to-face and then they log on to Slashdot and drop the N bomb uncontrollably. Then you will have a better understanding of what being Black is like.

American Grant Writing: Race Matters

simm_s No sir YOU are unconvincing! (464 comments)

How do you know about these breaks that Black people get that you don't have access to? You are making a lot of assumptions about plagiarism and stating them as fact and then you want data to prove that the problem is not the NIH it is the applicants lack of ability. How can this be? Where is your data? The NIH did the research to prove that it is not being fair in the grant selection process. The director of the NIH practically provided his mea coupla!

Next you assert that you would avoid Black doctors because you don't trust their qualifications. In your mind you believe even the possibility of corruption invalidates an entire race. Yet you fail to mention that there have been case of White doctors faking credentials. Exibit A: (http://www.cnbc.com/id/19330471) Should I then say all White doctors are frauds? Of course not! That would be idiotic!

Last time I looked that is text book racism. You can pull any reason out "they are not smart enough", "they got a free ride", etc.

I love at the end you scoff "Racism needs to go away." I got news for you, until you go away it will be here on Slashdot.

Slashdot is a terrible forum to discuss this stuff because the deck is stacked. If you need proof grep the archives for the N word.

Intel To Offer CPU Upgrades Via Software

simm_s Re:Preposterous. (499 comments)

That is called binning. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Product_binning
It is standard industry practice. Doing so saves *you* money because it gives customers the option to buy underperforming or semi-functional yields at a lower cost. It is good for the environment because it reduces manufacturing waste. Higher sellable yields improves profits for manufacturers and reduce costs for you. It is a win-win situation!
