TSA Union Calls For Armed Guards At Every Checkpoint

sincewhen Re:What a surprise (not) (603 comments)

But this will work out great! Every so often, someone will be shot, justifying the deployment of armed guards and emphasising how dangerous airports are and how necessary the TSA is to the safety of the public.

Class-action Suit Filed Against Microsoft Over Surface Write Off

sincewhen Re:Amazing ... (212 comments)

If I had mod points, I wouldn't be replying, but I have to agree.

Microsoft have always had a "tick the boxes on the feature list" and a "good enough - ship it" attitude. Over-promising and under-delivering. They have paid scant regard to the actual quality and usability of their products. They have done their best work when they have had viable opposition (although in the past they have cheated to win in those situations). I suspect this is because they are forced to focus, apply major effort *and* they have a yardstick to measure themselves against.
Maybe this is just good business sense to focus only when/where it is needed, but it has always angered me somewhat when this sets the (too low) standard for the operating system and office software used by the majority of people around the planet.
In a way I hope they can regroup and become a vibrant, productive company. But in another, I hope they die and are replaced by something better.

Android Fragmentation Isn't Hurting Its Adoption

sincewhen Re:It may not be hurting adoption... (419 comments)

Except that you also have to figure in that the average iOS user spends more (20% more?) on apps than the average Android user.

I have no idea how that breaks up into new phones/old phones, but it would also be a factor to include.

Android Fragmentation Isn't Hurting Its Adoption

sincewhen Re:Misses the point (419 comments)

I'm not sure that this is right. I agree that newer phones probably see more usage and more app purchases. But all iOS phones check in looking for updates. So, if the phone is switched on, it will show up in Apple's stats.

Best Buy Recalls MacBook Pro Batteries

sincewhen Re:More Battery Issues (56 comments)

And yet, I don't recall hearing about machines (from Apple or any other manufacturer) having battery problems lately.

Could it be that this is just a bad batch of cheaply made 3rd party batteries? I think so.

Fear of Thinking War Machines May Push U.S. To Exascale

sincewhen Re:wow, stupider than MAD! (192 comments)

it's not as if the political and military moves we make are even carefully thought-out at all!

Which is why they need a mega computer to do the thinking for them, silly!

Fear of Thinking War Machines May Push U.S. To Exascale

sincewhen Re:Another arms race? (192 comments)

Shame the space race died once America made target and the USSR fell apart. If that had kept going, we'd be living in apartments on Mars by now.

Or perhaps deploying weapons on Mars by now...

But this was during WWII and it's reasonable to adjust your views of what is acceptable when your country is in an existential conflict.

Transgendered Folks Encountering Document/Database ID Hassles

sincewhen Discrimination (814 comments)

This illustrates how discrimination is embedded in our society. We want to know details about someone (gender) so that we can assume other things (entitlement to maternity leave, say). But this supports treating people differently. The entitlement should be that anyone who gives birth or (or perhaps adopts) a baby is entitled to the leave. No need to identify gender.

AT&T Quietly Adds Charges To All Contract Cell Plans

sincewhen Re:Simple Greed (338 comments)

But that last $50 - the "pre-delivery" checks, are required on every vehicle, and should be included in the price.

Where I live, there is a concept of "Drive away price" or "drive away no more to pay" where the quoted price is what you will pay and includes everything.

AT&T Quietly Adds Charges To All Contract Cell Plans

sincewhen Re:Surcharge? (338 comments)

This may surprise you, but in some other cultures, tipping is entirely optional as we ensure our employers pay a reasonable wage to their staff.

If I go and buy groceries at the supermarket, and the cashier is friendly and helpful, I don't pay extra on my grocery bill, or slip them a fiver. If I buy new tyres for my car, and get good service, I give them my repeat busines, not a gratuity.

Why should restaurants be any different?

That said, it is not unusual to tip wait staff when the food and service is good. So I guess that our conventions don't make sense either...

Back when Microsoft was in trouble with the DOJ I hoped that they would be broken up. Not to destroy the company, but as you suggest, to give renewed focus on their target customers and reduce infighting.

sincewhen (640526) writes "According to an article on kuro5hin, copies of the movie TRON are being withdrawn at the request of the DHS.

Reports are emerging from members of the movie industry that the Department of Homeland Security has designated the 1982 film TRON as "sensitive", and ordered Walt Disney Studios to turn over all copies of the film in its posession. Retailers are also receiving notices to remove all copies of the film from stock shelves and turn them over to Federal officials. The reports have industry insiders bewildered and outraged.

Since the article is dated 29th March, this is NOT supposed to be an April Fools item."
