NYT: NSA Put 100,000 Radio Pathway "Backdoors" In PCs

sking Re:Where are they? (324 comments)

According to TFA, a tiny transceiver can be built into the plastic plug base of a USB cord. Of course, one has not been spotted in the wild, but it sounds theoretically possible.

Titan May Have Water Ocean Under the Surface

sking Re:Moon's face towards the earth? (64 comments)

I understand that the moon is tidally locked with the earth. What I don't understand is why the moon's movement is described as being "such that the same face is always facing the Earth." It appears to me as though the same area of the moon is being constantly lit by the sun. Doesn't that mean that that "face" is always facing the sun? I am not trying to be argumentative nor refute Cassini's Laws. I am just trying to understand the meaning of "face" in this particular context.

sking Moon's face towards the earth? (64 comments)

I thought the Earth's moon always presented the same face toward the sun. Am I totally misunderstanding what this means?

A Blue-Sky Idea For the USPS — Postal Trucks As Sensors

sking Re:Uhm... (252 comments)

I think the idea seeks to solve the problem of falling revenue. Selling data collected by sensors could be a potential revenue stream.

Gulf Oil Spill Nearing Loop Current

sking Minimal Impact? (334 comments)

According to NOAA Administrator Jane Lubchenco, who was interviewed on last night's McNeil Lehrer News Hour, the oil entering the Loop will have minimal environmental impact in other parts of the Gulf. She opines that "By the time the oil is in the loop current, it's likely to be very, very diluted. And, so, it's not likely to have a very significant impact. It sounds scarier than it is."
