"Neural Networks are just one representation of data."

an (artificial) neural network is a predictor which learns from data which has been around for some time. the grandparent meant the particular breakthrough that enable deep learning (which is the training neural networks with a lot of layers between input and output) was to figure out how to learn quickly. Previously, training these deep networks would take a lot of time to converge or not converge at all.

Mod parent up. When you have lots of data, you don't have to build any "expert" knowledge into a learner.

Stalin thought to produce super-soldiers by producing these primate hybrids. In fact, Africans were involved in the experiment, because they were thought to be genetically more "compatible"(trailing behind the evolutionary timeline) . This is the best google link I could find:

Are Human Beings Organisms Or Living Ecosystems?

Actually, "We are made out of tubes" was one of the motivations mentioned in my friend's thesis presentation on fruit fly research. And it wasn't meant as a joke.

How about creating two portals near a gravitational object to accelarate and reach speed of light? No air means no terminal velocity. Unfortunately, it also means you're dead.

was a good SciFi (mini-series) production that deserves a mention. I would have hoped they turned it into a regular show.

It's not the size of the brain that matters, but the surface area since the cortex is on the surface. Hence our convoluted brain. waiting for a "size matters" joke...

Why the Widening Gender Gap In Computer Science?

sleepy_sanchez Re:One sentence summary of the article (1563 comments)

I agree with the social influence. You're more likely to see Asian girls in math and science, I'm guessing family support is an important factor. I'm not sure those are the only reasons, there could be some biological differences, too. Girls tend to choose the life sciences more than physical sciences, so maybe they prefer animate over inanimate.

Looking for an affordable nettop/mini desktop

sleepy_sanchez sleepy_sanchez writes  |  more than 4 years ago

sleepy_sanchez (1301981) writes "What are good options for a cheap(sub-$350) mini desktop, that is good for non-gaming use flash videos, good web browsing, development in Eclipse, in other words non-gaming regular use? OK, I might play a few old games, too.
Specifically any thoughts on NVIDIA ION/Intel GMA, Intel Atom vs Core 2 Duo."
