smitsco First quantum asteroid found (134 comments)

Everytime they observe it, it changes. If they would stop looking at it, the debris will stop.

Down with the astronomers, they are destroying the asteroid.

How Did You Learn How To Program?

smitsco Paper Typewriter (623 comments)

Started in 1981, summer course at a local college, programming BASIC on a typewriter interface using 11 x 17 fan fold paper. No idea what the computer was called. In the following summer, there was a single mono chrome video display. Still remember the noise of the dozen or so kids running the programs.

How did the Mayans know someone would drill through two miles of ice to release something that will destroy the world?

smitsco Re:WTF? (149 comments)

Your example doesn't demonstrate the bug in question. The eyes in your example stop moving when I move the mouse cursor outside the window in IE 10.

Thanks for the information.

The original news article should have mentioned that. They would have had the number on the message ring.

Used the Slashdot comment box with Chrome browser. I didn't use an external editor and I didn't check for \r\n or \n afterward.

Did anyone happen to notice the class name for the div that contains the "Samsung/Apple UK judgment" link?

It is sosumi. Wow. I wonder if the web editor will be held accountable for that.

If you don't see it "so sue me".

Learning Programming In a Post-BASIC World

smitsco Small Basic (510 comments)

There is Small Basic from Microsoft. http://smallbasic.com/

From the website FAQ:

Who is Small Basic for?
Small Basic is intended for beginners that want to learn programming. In our internal trials we've had success with kids between the ages of 10 and 16. However, it's not limited to just kids; even adults that had an inclination to programming have found Small Basic very helpful in taking that first step.
