Philippine Cybercrime Law Put On Indefinite Hold

someonestolecc morality, politics, power and censorship (70 comments)

There's some morality stuff going on here. If you've ever been here you'll know that movies are re-edited and sanitised, swearing is censored and all that. Which is amazingly weird since the females are generally quite hot... This will be mostly political. You can go to prison here for "offending the church" etc.

Australian Government Censors Draft Snooping Laws

someonestolecc Re:Aussies, now you know why... (150 comments)

Difference there is that those weren't 'total wars' where literally everyone/everything is getting destroyed. They're also wars with local fighters vs foreign. In the pro-guns case (which is NUTS by the way) these dynamics don't apply.

LinkedIn Profiles Contain Fewer Lies Than Resumes

someonestolecc Re:People and Places Vouching You? (88 comments)

This is true, but consider that in the company I am currently working in we have an ex-staff member that wasn't that great. In fact, not so great that over a year onward he still appears in our company page as one of the higher ups (at least by title). I've tried to flag it multiple times but LinkedIn support came back with something to the effect of "yeah we get it but every time you say he's not in the company, we tell him to update his details.. ultimately it's user generated however".. the inference is if you get flagged they just ask you to update your profile. Obviously he's choosing to keep this active for what ever reason (or just ignoring it all) - but I think no matter what it looks as if he's associated with the company for anyone who looks at us on LinkedIn. Pretty shit.

Clothier Slammed For Using 'Perfect' Virtual Model

someonestolecc wtf (471 comments)

seriously .. why is this news? it actually makes perfect sense. the whole up in arms "think of the children" or "dont be sexist" or "anti model" brigades are all jumping the gun ... shouldn't we be ridiculing those that look at CGI bodies (which are so obviously generated, confirmed and articulated as such) and think "I want to look like that".. how is this a 'perfect' body? when did H&M ever say that? have we all gone full retard?

Rats Feel Each Other's Pain

someonestolecc ironic much? (200 comments)

Wait. Did anyone else pick up the irony? Empathy lets us feel another persons pain. We just "discovered" that rats have the ability to it.. - Great news! We can be cruel to rats in order to learn more about our empathy? There are two immediate possibilites that pop into mind from there: that the planned research to generalise over to us is intended to help us disable or manipulate empathy ... and or that in other news, human to animal empathy is showing to be lacking. i liked the post saying to speak to any pet owner or look at any wildlife doco...

US Energy Panel Cautiously Endorses Fracking

someonestolecc Re:Christian Science (294 comments)

Yeah, I'm going to read an article from a "Christian Science" publication. Whatever that is. Skipping this one.

Translation: "derp derp herr derp" The irony... kind of how I feel about religion...yet CSMonitor is one of the better newspapers out there - they actually have less propaganda than cnn.. (I'm assuming AC is American hence thinks cnn is a good benchmark.)

KDE Software Compilation 4.6.0 Released

someonestolecc Re:Wonderful - everyone should try this! (202 comments)

Not sure about the community, but amarok 1 WAS the best player fullstop across all OSs even with the buggyness. Now it's just.. .. like all the rest which are missing the killer interface amarok 1 had - but unlike other stable players that are simple it's bugged out and looks complicated for the little features it has. Of course, I still use it.. but i'm sentimental :P

Should Dolphins Be Treated As Non-Human Persons?

someonestolecc Re:Non-human intelligences (785 comments)

That's fine logic but you're not taking it all the way. You're saying they should be held to the same actual standards. Well, when the pod excludes a dolphin - it's because it's not down with the pack. If it gang rapes a dolphin - again, punishment etc. Those are the standards; so actually they already do. You'll also find that warring and taking fems will have biological reasons. That's why rich guy gets hot anorexic girl - most guys would'nt be able to afford to coke/rehab bill :)

Should Dolphins Be Treated As Non-Human Persons?

someonestolecc Re:Obligatory South Park (785 comments)

That's retarded. Till it's pulled out of the water? Don't tell me you think dolphins are fish?? The net, if it doesn't lacerate the thing it's caught will stop it from moving, which will kill a fish. It'll also stop the dolphin (and whales, turtles etc) coming back up to the surface to get a nice gulp of what you and I take for granted .. air.. Texting while driving isn't comparable. The comparison would be like in the game called kill all humans or whatever where an alien race comes and decides it's funny to use a ray gun on you that happens to envelope you into some sort of liquid you can't breathe - then you die as you take gulps of it into your lungs.. let's call the liquid sea water.

Should Dolphins Be Treated As Non-Human Persons?

someonestolecc Re:Non-human intelligences (785 comments)

Actually that's not true. I think the justification at the time, and any slavery, is basically to see the enslaved as sub-human - or at least not as good as what ever "us" is. We fuck all animals.. in my experience most times animals are probably more deserving of "rights" than most people... but the whole thing about slavery is that it's an exploitation of people as a resource. We exploit animals as resources all the time and while we shouldn't do that, the case being put forward is that there's enough human similarity to dolphins that they should be treated accordingly.. Though potentially we should start with the great apes as well, then extend it to other animals. ... guess it means no more dolphin full tuna

Eliminating buzzing sound output

someonestolecc someonestolecc writes  |  about 4 years ago

someonestolecc (1038714) writes "I've had something annoying me about computers and sound reproduction for a while. For some reason they all seem to produce a buzz in the sound output if the volume is low enough. It's either when moving the mouse, possibly cpu usage and/or hard drive activity. This has happened to me for the last 15 years in various rigs and in varying intensities.

It's never really bothered me to the point it does recently as I'm in an apartment where sometime I need to listen to things at a low volume and I'm really into my music. I've experienced it regardless of power points used, audio cables (rca/trs/whatever), inputs (external or internal sound card, onboard or off board), motherboards, operating systems, speakers, headphones, and troubleshooted (shot?) every other which way I could think of. At the moment I'm using some pretty decent low level studio monitors and when they're not plugged into the computer they're dead quiet. As soon as they are plugged in they seem to carry electrical interference that has a buzz (on/off, disk activity whirring etc). Recently I bought even bought a Cakewalk UA-1G external sound card because I thought the motherboard might be carrying it but of course this actually didn't help (and strangely the interference is _exactly_ the same). Honestly I didn't think this was possible as the sound card is a USB card. I'm entirely lost. Of course I can turn the volume up but I shouldn't have this interference should I? Can someone explain how or why this is occurring and what I need to do to stop it? Do I need a digital output to a device that's powered differently or maybe it's the 50-60hz electricity I get in Aussieland?"
