New Firefox For Android Beta Released

speedingant Re:stupid slashcode... (107 comments)

Agreed, it's a POS browser on a tablet. It looks tacky, doesn't work well at all. Why change to tabs on the side, but cannot slide to remove and half the time you close the tab window it removes a tab. FFF-FF-UUUU!!!

Ask Slashdot: How Do You Manage Your Personal Data?

speedingant Easy! (414 comments)

unRAID (cheap, expandable, protected data) coupled with inexpensive offsite disk backup (eg your parents house, providing you don't live there already!).

Which OSS Clustered Filesystem Should I Use?

speedingant Performance (320 comments)

What kind of performance are you after? If you're not after anything over 40MB/S, I'd go for unRAID. I use this at home and it's brilliant. I've replaced many drives over the years, and I've had two hard drives fail with no massive consequences (data isn't striped). Plus, many many plugins are now available. SimpleFeatures (replacement gui), Plex Media Server, SQL, Email notifications with APCUPSD support etc etc.

Have fun complaining about everyone that gets into power. They're all as bad as each other. Changes happens when you, the collective, do something about it.

New MacBook Pro Teardown Reveals 'Shoddy Assembly'

speedingant Re:HP - Dell? (531 comments)

Tough crowd... I didn't explicitly compare anything with something half the price, and most brand create comparably priced products in some part of their range...

Presuming because they market it well, and there are many people with lots of expendable income to purchase something 'different'?

Not necessarily - until you've pulled one apart you don't realise how tight everything fits together.

New MacBook Pro Teardown Reveals 'Shoddy Assembly'

speedingant Re:HP - Dell? (531 comments)

Logic board design is far neater. Less individual components hanging off the main board, so instead they are integral. This leaves more room for battery/other components. You can compare desktops, as they are well overpriced. No difference between a nice Gigabyte/Asus board and a motherboard in a Mac Pro.

New MacBook Pro Teardown Reveals 'Shoddy Assembly'

speedingant Re:HP - Dell? (531 comments)

Perhaps I was just trying to show some perspective, for the all common Apple bashing crowd here. It happens with other computers too, no matter the price. My original point was that it's down to where they manufacture the computers, not the brand.

New MacBook Pro Teardown Reveals 'Shoddy Assembly'

speedingant Re:HP - Dell? (531 comments)

Might I add, I presume having a very complex/intricate design would make construction a lot trickier.. Compare the innards of a MacBook Pro and any other laptop manufacturer and you'll know what I'm talking about.

New MacBook Pro Teardown Reveals 'Shoddy Assembly'

speedingant HP - Dell? (531 comments)

Lets try open an equivalent HP/Dell then eh? Build quality depends on how much you want to pay the little 3rd world country workers to assemble them. For all major companies, that isn't much!

Apple Asks Security Experts To Examine OS X Lion

speedingant Re:The opposite??? (417 comments)

It's not bad actually... You need a MacMini server x2 to replicate each other, and push out the managed settings. You can authenticate machines via AD/OD/OpenLDAP. You can host the home folders off any NFS/AFP server. Netboot, netrestore etc makes deploying easy.. I'm looking after 150 Macs at the moment, as well as a host of PC's, and I don't have many issues. It' s just me.

Law to fight internet piracy rushed through

speedingant speedingant writes  |  more than 3 years ago

speedingant (1121329) writes "A new law to combat internet piracy in New Zealand is being rushed through Parliament under urgency this afternoon NZT.

The Copyright (Infringing File Sharing) Amendment Bill bans file sharing. It would allow copyright owners to ask for a six-month suspension of the internet accounts of those who repeatedly infringe.

This is a shock, mainly due to the fact that it hasn't been debated, and urgency is supposed to be used for laws regarding the Christchurch earthquake. There is no public way we can oppose this law, making this a blatant attack on our privacy, and democracy itself."
