Too Many College Graduates?

spookymonster Tell that to the employers (1138 comments)

When every job out there has a 4-year degree as a prereq, it's kinda hard to justify getting anything less.

Obama Calls Today's Ubiquitous Gadgets and Information "a Distraction"

spookymonster Personal opinion != Government policy (545 comments)

This was a graduation address, not a state of the union speech. He's not laying down policy here. He's speaking to a very specific audience (graduating students) about a very specific topic (transitioning from school to the workforce). This was not the preamble to new legislation, nor should it be misconstrued as such.

IMHO, Eisenhower's Council on Youth Fitness was a far more intrusive condemnation of how we spent our leisure time than this.

Joss Whedon To Direct The Avengers

spookymonster Re:Seriously, this is a casting nightmare (349 comments)

If you're going to go with someone in their 50s as Thor, why not Dolph Lundgren? IMHO, it was poor scripting that did the man in, not his acting. Check out "I Come in Peace" some time...

Joss Whedon To Direct The Avengers

spookymonster Re:Doubt it will ever get made (349 comments)

Except the studio has already factored in RDj's inevitable self-destruction after Iron Man 2. By the time The Avenger's starts shooting, they'll have him down to a box of crackers and a prepaid Starbucks card.

US Unable To Win a Cyber War

spookymonster Which country _would_ win? (327 comments)

Frankly, I feel the US is more prepared than most countries. Unfortunately, that still doesn't quite cut it.

I think the threat of indefensible counter-attack is going to make any government think twice about a full-on cyber-attack, taking the same role nuclear retaliation did during the Cold War.

Wikileaks Publishes 500,000 9/11 Pager Messages

spookymonster Re:So much raw data (309 comments)

In what context were these quotes made? What was the nature of the lies? Were they covering up their own incompetent response (like, say, the FAA taking too long to contact NORAD)? Or were they of a much larger scope (like trying to hide a missile attack on the pentagon)? Quite a bit of difference between those two...

World's Only Diesel-Electric Honda Insight

spookymonster I already do (687 comments)

"By using less fuel you are shifting the tax burden onto those who cannot afford a high tech vehicle."

How do you figure? If the sticker price is higher, then so is the amount of taxes I'm paying to roll it off the showroom floor.

Also, your argument is only valid at the leading edge of the paradigm shift to high tech vehicle adoption. Eventually, those brand new 'high tech vehicles' will fall into the secondary markets (e.g., used car lots), becoming more affordable with each resale. It's only a matter of time until we reach the tipping point where gas guzzlers are in the minority. When we're all driving cars that get 100 mpg, then we're all sharing the burden equally.

Fighting progress because it changes the status quo is a losing proposition.

Adjustable-Focus Glasses Can Replace Bifocals

spookymonster Re:Cool, but... (220 comments)

Why not try laser correction? I used to have astigmatisms in both eyes (one significantly worse than the other). Laser surgery completely removed my dependency on eyeglasses.

Now that I'm getting older, I'm finding my arms a little too short ;). So a pair of reading glasses that can adjust as my presbyopia progresses would be greatly appreciated.

That way, Frodo starts out near-death from exposure to the outside world, but ends up happy at home, blissfully ignorant of what's going on outside the shire, while his ancient and powerful Supreme Leader takes care of all that messy 'freedom' stuff....

What OS and Software For a Mobile Documentary Crew?

spookymonster Where will you be? (229 comments)

If you will always be in the same location as all the systems you're outfitting, go with what you can provide adequate support for (Linux/Open Source, I presume).

If these systems are going to be scattered around the globe, go for Windows. Say what you will about Windows, but you'll find on-site support in damn near every country you travel to.

Macs might be a good option if they'll be deployed to major metropolitan cities only (NY, LA, London, etc.).
