Let Spouses of H-1B Visa Holders Work In US, Says White House

t0qer Re:seems like a back door (566 comments)

I currently work for a company wrought with H1-B abuse. Scam goes like this.

Passover a bunch of US resumes/candidates.
Recruit someone from India
Promise them a $100k+ salary.

2 months later.
"Sorry, but you're not as good as what you're getting paid, how about you take a pay cut or quit?"

At this point the H1-B has "If I quit, I have to pack up in 30 days and go home" running through their head, so they accept.

The sad thing is, they expect US workers to be just as complacent as their H1-B counterparts. I won't, I've had to fight hard the last year just to not get screwed over. I've had enough, I'm so tired of it, that I'm going to file a WH-4 with the department of labor on my employer. Someone needs to tell them this is not OK.

The actual H1-B workers, they're hardworking, good people, but the system has been setup to screw them. This needs to change.

Oh it gets worse than that. Upon arrive.

Manager: Things aren't working out here, you can take a pay cut or quit.
H1b: I'll take a pay cut.

You now have an h1b working for $40k.

Are DVDs Inconvenient On Purpose?

t0qer Sync Licensing. (490 comments)

Mechanical, compulsory is easy licensing to deal with. Not really much restrictions on the distribution format. Sync licensing on the other hand gives the artist the right to dictate which methods of distribution are allowed. So if an artist says, "NO STREAMING" there will be no streaming.

There. TL;DR;'d that for ya.

Facebook To Pay City $200K-a-Year For a Neighborhood Cop

t0qer The real reason FB has an officer. (235 comments)

I work down the street from their menlo park/willow road campus. Right now Facebook is building an apartment complex across the street from HQ. They've promised to only rent 10% of the apartments to their employees with the other 90% being offered to the general public at market rate.

Despite the nice sounding name, Menlo Park's east side is akin to East Palo Alto. Slum neighborhoods, crime, ghetto. With the influx of google/facebook employees however the neighborhood is slowly gentrifying.

I think facebook wants to turn the neighborhood into something more appealing for their employees.

Thank you for your blog. Everything we've long suspect about the TSA's attitude and purpose was validated by your posts. It was brave of you to be the whistleblower, and I think all of us owe you a debt of thanks.

Safety Measures Fail To Stop Fukushima Plant Leaks

t0qer What would happen if they just let it meltdown? (157 comments)

Just curious,

Instead of pumping in (then polluting) seawater, why not just let the thing meltdown? It would essentially bury the fuel. After it drops down a 1000' or so, fill the hole in with cement. I wouldn't be too worried about volcanic eruptions, radiation is what keeps the earth core nice and soft.

BSD Real-Time Operating System NuttX Makes Its 100th Release: NuttX 6.33

t0qer What makes an OS realtime? (64 comments)

Had a friend ask me this once. I honestly couldn't come up with an answer. You look at the nuts and bolts of O/S's both realtime and non realtime, and it's basically all the same stuff, with more emphasis given to lower transaction times. Is it just a buzzword? Not trying to troll, but if someone has a definitive answer I'd love to hear it.

Music Industry Is Keeping Streaming Services Unprofitable

These are the 4 agencies you have to pay royaltees to.

I've seen the rates. Altogether it's about $6k per year to stream your standard shoutcast style station. When streamers like spotify, etc have revenues in the millions, that's a drop in the bucket.

The only time there is a sabot in the gears is when it's video. Then your standard mechanical/compositional licenses fees are required, and on top of that a Sync license is required which adds an entire clusterfuck of problems. With non-sync you just pay the 4 agencies, but none of them collect Sync rights. You have to track down every person involved in the production to get permission to stream any music with video in it.

Ask Slashdot: Why Are We Still Writing Text-Based Code?

t0qer April 1st isn't for a few more months (876 comments)

I think the /. folks think it's an early April Fools day. Not write code using text? That's like saying, write a book with pictures. Sure it can be done, but it doesn't apply to all books.

Maybe beta is an early April Fools joke too.

t0qer Re:Why? (2219 comments)

Occasionally I have to work in a basement with no coverage. I have to sit there typing in select statements, insert statements, ldd, cp, rm -f, etc. Client won't even give me a damn wifi key. They lock my workstation down, put some crappy SSH and SCP client on, and apply enough GPO's to where IE won't even work.

At least I have ssh though. At least I can still lynx out.

Why Games Should Be In the Public Domain

t0qer Homeworld should never be PD (360 comments)

Yah I have to put homeworld in a category of its own. I haven't played a game since that holds up so well 15 years after its release. That feeling when you're trying to save the cryo-tubes, Adagio for Strings is playing, and that overwhelming sense of hopelessness. One of those few games that is truly a work of art. I've played and replayed lots of games from that era (spent a lot of time in descent on KALI) but overall I think that is the one game that is quintessentially unique.

It's not fair to say, "Only one game deserves such a protection" though. You can't fairly say one game is excepted, so you have to accept that all games should be allowed to keep their copyrights/trademarks. Even the crappy ones.

Do employed tech workers live under a dome?

t0qer t0qer writes  |  about a year ago

t0qer (230538) writes "I've been thinking about this myself lately. I made a comment on the Gbus protests the other day, and a few of the responses were "Entitled" as some users put it. Myself, I'm back in tech after a 12 year layoff.

What I mean by "Living under a dome" is do these perks do more to isolate these workers from the realities facing most job seekers in this economy? This article states that the jobless rate is actually closer to 37.2%. I know many people working at some of these companies, and their attitudes cover the spectrum from entitled to altruistic.

How can we get across some of these younger tech workers that the world outside their gilded cages isn't the same as the one they live within?"

Sony silently drops PS3 linux support.

t0qer t0qer writes  |  about 7 years ago

t0qer writes "Up until this week, hackers at the PS2dev.org forums have been hot on the trail of writing a hardware accellerated driver for the PS3 RSX chip until Sony released thier new firmware. Now it seems that updating to the new 2.10 version of PS3 firmware not only blocks RSX access completely, but breaks linux installs as well. This is a harsh blow to the PS3 linux community."

Effects of internet karaoke on a bar

t0qer t0qer writes  |  more than 10 years ago So like, everyone knows about http://www.7bamboo.com/ now. It's really amazing the effect it's having on bar attendance. At first there was a few naysayers, but eventually everyone has warmed up to the cam, and we've yet to lose a customer over it. In fact, we've gained a few new customers because of it. Everyday the site gets more members, and everyday we get more and more known throughout the bay area and the world. Whoever thought drunk people singing karaoke would be so popular?

Holy shit i'm famous

t0qer t0qer writes  |  more than 10 years ago

In a total fluke, i've become famous.

It started out with me making NSV video's of me singing karaoke songs in my living room and posting them in the forums. Then I started taking peoples requests. Over 40gigs of these video's were downloaded in a 5 day period. Absolutely amazing.

One of the winamp guys, christophe decided to start a winampTV station with these videos. Amazingly, that got popular too.

I got the bright idea to take it a step further. My weekend fun job is working at a karaoke bar. So I asked my boss if I could install a camera, DSL, and do streaming video. To my delight he let me do it.

Tim Gnatek of the New York Times was going to do a story on winampTV when he found out about me. He came down to the bar, hung out for the evening, asking questions, taking notes, and doing the "good journalist" thing. I knew that this story was really going to be published when a week later, a NYT photographer was sent out. Big ass camera, lots and lots of pictures.

Finally, AOL decided to take me under their wing. I have a 200 user shoutcast server running on a sun solaris blade. Free, just because AOL likes the content i'm creating.

I don't know what to do at this point. I love the attention, but how do I keep it from being a 1 hit wonder, how do I keep it from being just "my 15 minutes of fame"? I just don't want to fizzle out of peoples memories.

Anyways, if you're reading this journal, and you want to see the site, check out http://www.7bamboo.com. Also check out the articles on winamp about me, ect.

One thing I am having problems with is SESAC. They're insisting that I pay them royaltee's for people singing karaoke over the internet. To my knowledge, there's only one other place in the world doing this (cats meow karaoke, google it) There's a section 107 of the copyright law, in which 2 live crew won against sesac for their parody of "Pretty Woman". If you saw a white guy singing sir mix a lot songs terribly, wouldn't that be a parody? Sesac doesn't want to think so.

Man, it's been a long time since I wrote here. These stories on slash just haven't appealed to me in the last few months. Maybe i'll write again soon.

What a bored out of work geek does with his time.

t0qer t0qer writes  |  more than 11 years ago

My brain feels fried...

Since my layoff 2.5 years ago, the best work i've been able to find is a friday night job as a bouncer at a karaoke bar. I like karaoke, it's good stuff, good fun.

Anyways I started reading about this thing called MP3+G. Basically it's a way to covert your CDG karaoke disks over to an MP3 format while still preserving the karaoke lyrics. The software components for the system are simple, winamp + CDG plugin, all free shit.

So I spent the last week using a borrowed plextor drive plus my own (one of the few drives that can read a CDG disk) converting the bar's CDG collection into MP3+G. What a fucking nightmare, 12 hour days of ripping CD after CD until I had their collection complete.

Yesterday I installed the whole mess running on a PIII500 and a dual display video card at the bar. People were very impressed to say the least. I still have some work to do on the machine though, like locking down the filesystem and user accounts so nobody can get in and inadvertantly fuck things up.

Well now's your chance to meet 'ol toq if you live in the bay area. My bar (7 Bamboo) is on the corner of 4th and Jackson street in San Jose and I can usually be found there Friday night throwing out the smelly bums that walk around stealing peoples beer off their table. I do my best to keep the swirly drunken construction worker types outta there, and keep it down to us geeks.

Anyways, i'm looking for any extra brain power I can find on this project, the systems installed now, it just needs "tweaking" Just come down, check it out, and if your idea sounds usefull or applicable i'll throw it into the system.

Gaim for win32 released, other cool things

t0qer t0qer writes  |  more than 11 years ago

Some of you may or may not know, I use windows as a primary desktop. I've
been on top of MS releases since 95 (unless u can count dos 3.3 through 6.22) No
negative zealotry comments please, I have my reasons and lets just leave it at

So gaim has been
released for windows. Way cool! What is gaim? Well, I discovered it
a while back, when I decided to give RH8 a try as a desktop for 3 months.
It's a better instant messenger client than anything out there because of it's
interoperability between all the IM protocols out there. Out of all the
things I enjoyed during my 3 month RH8 gaim was #1 on my list, so much so I
installed it on my linux server and used
reflectionX to run the application in a remote X display.

I've been on the net since mosaic 1, I didn't actually realize that, but that
slash article confirmed this for me. Damn, 10 years....

The problem though has been people change e-mail addresses, but with instant
messaging this hasn't been a problem. I could stay in touch will all my "net"
friends without too much hassle.

Of course, IRC bleh exists. I used it for everything from chatting to
warezing, yay it sucks.

So for 10 years, i've gone through times where I either dropped contacts when
I switched to other IM clients, or I was running multiple clients, or I was
saying fuck this I aint runnin shit no more because it's a pain in the ass.
Then came Gaim :)

I gotta shower for work, gotta run soon. Oh, here's some
old school fun i've been playin with the
past week :) Doom II kicks ass with dynamic lighting and true quake models.

Burger King drops African-American Advertising

t0qer t0qer writes  |  more than 11 years ago

Shitty stories the last few weeks, nothing really of interest to comment on, so I'm back here again writing my own stories...

Has anyone noticed Burger King no longer is advertising to African Americans? Just 2 years ago BK was pumping out commercials that looked like psuedo rap video's, complete with a puff daddy lookalike. Obvious attempt to get more african americans to eat more BK.

An interesting side note, BK is run by a African American management team (saw it hanging on a plaque at BK)

Lately BK has been running commercials, showing white cowboys talking about what a great life it is, the smell of the burning wood, burgers cooked over an open fire, yadda yadda. Has anyone else noticed this?
