Ask Slashdot: Best Phone Apps?

taxman_10m Re:Listmania begins (167 comments)

What's the appeal of Firefox mobile over Chrome? On the desktop I use Firefox because it has a real adblocker, but on Firefox mobile it doesn't appear I can add to the filterlist from my phone which makes the adblock plus mostly worthless.

taxman_10m Does it self-update to 64-bit? (113 comments)

I've been running 32-bit Chrome on Windows 7 64-bit. Does the Chrome self-update upgrade it to Chrome 64-bit or is it a seperate download somewhere?

I Want a Kindle Killer

taxman_10m Re:Feature Creep V2R1 (321 comments)

For me, it's about expanding it as a reader. If the Kindle had a gmail app and an rss reader I'd pick one up tomorrow.

I Want a Kindle Killer

taxman_10m Re:The Nook is/was excellent (321 comments)

I don't care for your keyboard idea, but yes about the rooted Nook. I'm not sure why no one came out with a full fledged android device with an eink screen. If you are mostly reading emails, reading internet articles, reading twitter, etc, it works great and is very functional.

The difference is that no one thinks Obama is sincere. For him it's just a political calculation.

Daylight Saving Time Linked To Heart Attacks

taxman_10m Re:A simpler cure (240 comments)

For me the problem is most likely that because I miss that hour of sleep I'm only making it through the day with vast amounts of coffee. Which then makes me wired.

Daylight Saving Time Linked To Heart Attacks

taxman_10m I believe it. (240 comments)

I feel miserable for at least 2 weeks after daylight savings time. Like someone kicked me in the head each morning. Walk around like a zombie.

You do realize that it is possible to congratulate the winner while also trying to find the cause for a loss, don't you?

Not really, no.

Microsoft Building an 'Xbox Reading' App For Windows 8

taxman_10m The direction to Nook should have taken. (52 comments)

The eInk Nook was able to be rooted into a full fledged android tablet. The version of android was rather old which was unfortunate, but otherwise it was a nice device. Reading GMail, looking at RSS feeds, viewing twitter were all pretty good on an eInk screen. It would have been nice to see a company produce a device that did this.

Dirty Tricks? Look-Alike Websites Lure Congressional Donors

taxman_10m Re:Easy fix (157 comments)

I'm unclear how that is fraud. The intent is to get people to recoup a donation made in error. Am I misunderstanding?

GOP Bill To Outlaw EPA 'Secret Science' That Is Not Transparent, Reproducible

taxman_10m This is coming from a political party. (618 comments)

You want us to be blind to political motivations? The GOP cares not a wit about environmental protection. Time and time again the GOP has shown this to be the case. It's entirely appropriate to ask cuo bono? This is so transparently a loophole. Anytime there is a proposed regulation and the underlying science cannot be reproduced by the Heartland Foundation then that will tie the EPA's hands. Of course the Heartland Foundation would give a good faith effort to reproduce the results, right?

Btw, this is my first experience with the beta. If this stays, I go.

Any concerted effort to revive Usenet?

taxman_10m taxman_10m writes  |  about 9 months ago

taxman_10m (41083) writes "I've felt for a long time that Usenet as a repository for technical knowledge was better than Stack Exchanges, Reddits, Google+ Communities and various assorted blogs and message boards. Particularly Google+ Communities. Recently info on modifying an Acer Chromebook to run full Ubuntu was moved to such a community. I can't be the only one that finds the layout to be an utter abortion, can I? I'm curious if there is any effort underway to bring back Usenet. One of the big downfalls of Usenet mentioned is spam, but certainly there are ways to deal with that now. If such a movement to bring back Usenet doesn't exist, I'd like to get the discussion started here."

Twitter Fatigue

taxman_10m taxman_10m writes  |  more than 5 years ago

taxman_10m (41083) writes "Taking a look at the RSS feeds I subscribe to, I noticed that the feed from ATI which usually alerted me to driver updates is now defunct. It's been replaced by Twitter.

Catalyst updates will no longer be available as an RSS feed
We are excited to announce excluse updates on Twitter!

For a while now I've had a few friends, only a few, tell me repeatedly how awesome Twitter is. And tell me again. And still again. I've tried Twitter and quite frankly didn't find it very useful for anything. I was content to ignore Twitter and chalk up the fact that I didn't get it to simply not being hip, cool, and/or, with it. However, now that the Twitter trend has intruded upon my feed reading and inconvenienced me, I'm wondering whether I'm alone or are others suffering from Twitter fatigue?"
