Go, Google's New Open Source Programming Language

tb3 Re:Build-in function library (831 comments)

I'm reading that book, too, after I finished "Coders At Work" by Peter Seibel. Ken Thompson is one of the coders interviewed in that book, so it's worth the read if you're interested in what he's working on at Google.

Look on the bright side; electric kettles used to be illegal in the U.S. They were thought to be a fire hazard.

Well, left wing lunatics just cry, wring their hands, and spend money.
Right wing lunatics shoot people and blow stuff up.

So yeah, I'd say replacing them with left wing lunatics is better.

It seems the reality is that most of these Cable broadband companies are simply lacking in competent IT, networking and Executive staff.

Is that all?
Dude, they're so inept they are lacking competent janitors!

The Amazing World of Software Version Numbers

tb3 Re:Oracle (321 comments)

Oh, crud, you're right. Memory's going in my old age.
It was Watcom 6.0, so numbered because it was greater than Microsoft C 5.0 at the time.

The Amazing World of Software Version Numbers

tb3 Re:Oracle (321 comments)

Watcom was even better. The first release of their C/C++ compiler was Watcom C 10.0. They picked 10 because it was bigger than any competitor's version number at the time.

Symantec Exec Warns Against Relying On Free Antivirus

tb3 Re:Anything is better than Norton (459 comments)

All "security" programs do that. It's SOP for these things to turn off, or ask the user to turn off, any competing programs during installation. Supposedly they all conflict with each other, but that sounds like an excuse for lousy programming to me.

Fake News Scam Sites Advertising On Real News Sites

tb3 Re:ABC Should Crack Down (128 comments)

I think the crackdown should be on Visa and Mastercard. Think about it; it's illegal to receive stolen goods, or sell stolen property, but the credit card companies are acting as intermediaries for these crooks. And, oh yeah, taking a cut (something like 3 - 5%). If the credit card companies had to take more responsibility for who they granted merchant accounts, under penalty of law, I'll bet these fraudsters would find it a lot harder to operate.

tb3 writes "The real reason for delay in the release of Vista has been discovered, according to an article to appear in Wired. In the article, an ex-Microsoft employee claims that Apple tricked Microsoft into attempting to develop what was then code-named "Longhorn" in INTERCAL. INTERCAL is an obscure programming language originally designed as a joke, but since it is well known that Bill Gates has no sense of humor, he forged ahead with Longhorn development using the language, refusing to give Apple any perceived advantage in the OS development wars."
