An Army Medal For Coding In Perl

techstar25 Who uses Perl anymore? (192 comments)

The next time someone asks "What good is Perl anymore?" or "Who actually uses Perl?" or "Why use Perl?" you can point them to this article. Perl is perfect for this type of quick development. Sometimes the older languages still have a lot of value.

Chinese-Built Cars Are Coming To the US Next Year

techstar25 Volvo or any other for that matter (431 comments)

Nobody buys Volvo because of who assembled it. They buy because of who engineered it. There is a difference there. Parts are made all over the world, are interchangeable to a degree, and can be assembled rather easily. What differentiates cars is who engineered them.

Is Google Making the Digital Divide Worse?

techstar25 Learning? Who is learning? (259 comments)

Don't assume that access to the internet is making anybody smarter. I think that's the real question. If anything, access to the internet is making people less intelligent, and I think there is more evidence to support that claim. The child who walks to the library and picks up a book and reads is going to end up smarter than the kids who hits up wikipedia, youtube, and various blogs to get his information.

Kentucky: Programming Language = Foreign Language

techstar25 Not a language (426 comments)

A programming language is technically not a "language" at all. The word "language" is used as a sort of nickname for what programming really is. That's like giving physical education credits for "web surfing" just because it has the word "surfing" in it, or biology/entomology credit for debugging just because it has the word "bug" in it.

Facebook Mocks 'Infection' Study, Predicts Princeton's Demise

techstar25 Re:What will replace Facebook? (193 comments)

"Currently there is no "successor" to Facebook". Well, of course there isn't. And there wasn't a successor to Myspace for a while either. What we are saying is that we "can't imagine" a successor to Facebook, because, let's face it, if we could we would certainly build it. But the way these things work is that something will come out of nowhere and we'll immediately feel like we "need" to be a part of it. It will fulfill a need we didn't even know we had. Oh, there will be something that knocks off Facebook and probably Google as well.

It can't be that hard to disable or remove the GPS. I'm sure anyone who can assemble their own computer (which is probably everybody at Slashdot) could do it in an hour. My assumption is that it won't be illegal to tamper with either.

Ask Slashdot: What Magazines Do You Still Read?

techstar25 Cigar Aficionado (363 comments)

Cigar Aficionado. It's like if "GQ" was mature and sophisticated. I like that the articles are actually the size of articles and require an adult attention span to read. They aren't tiny blurbs and blog posts which most magazines have resorted to (as the web has decreased everyone's attention span).

Ann McDonald gives birth near McDonald's

UNION, Mo. (AP) -- Ann McDonald knew the baby was coming and there wasn't a hospital in sight, so she pulled over and delivered the child outside - what else? - a McDonald's restaurant.

Chayse Westin McDonald was due Wednesday. But on Sunday, Ann McDonald knew her time was getting near - and fast.

Problem was, there is no hospital in this eastern Missouri town, and the closest one in Washington was 15 minutes away.

McDonald and the child's grandmother, Linda Cuneio, got in the car, but it soon became evident they wouldn't make it to a hospital. So they pulled over at a McDonald's in Union. The baby was born beneath the golden arches.

"I was standing by her and I thought I better get something," Cuneio told KMOV-TV in St. Louis. "I better catch this baby. Just at that instance, the (emergency medical technician) walked up."

The irony of the location wasn't lost on mother or grandmother.

"Of course everyone is like, 'Are you going to name him Ronald?,'" Ann McDonald said.

Ann McDonald's husband is serving in Iraq. He is expected home in April.

Wild pigs a nuisance for airport neighbors

An article from Fort Myers headlined "Pig problems: Wild hogs become nuisance," appeared in FLORIDA TODAY Nov. 14 describing a problem that also occurs locally.

Visit the Fountainhead South neighborhood in Melbourne, or any other homes that border Melbourne International Airport. We are overrun with wild pigs.

They have dug up our yards. We get the grass packed down and the next day we have another trench where they have dug it up.

They not only are digging, but also, contrary to what was described in this article, very aggressive. I stepped out my front door Friday evening and one almost ran me over. On Saturday night, my neighbor was approaching my front door and a pig came out after her. These pigs were not cornered and certainly were not in any danger.

I have contacted the Airport Authority, as have several other residents. To date, I have not had a response on any efforts to control our pig population.

Half of adults with HIV are women

LONDON, England (Reuters) -- Women make up nearly half of the 37.2 million adults living with HIV according to a U.N. report released on Tuesday.

"Increasingly the face of AIDS is young and female," said Dr. Kathleen Cravero, deputy executive director of the Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS).

It was also revealed that half of all adults are in fact women. What are the odds of that? This is amazing stuff.

SALISBURY, Md. (AP) -- Six-time Olympic champion Michael Phelps was arrested last week and charged with drunken driving.

A trooper saw the 19-year-old swimming sensation go through a stop sign Thursday night, state police said Monday. The trooper saw signs of intoxication and arrested Phelps for driving under the influence, police said.

Phelps also was charged with violation of a license restriction and failure to obey a stop sign. The legal drinking age in Maryland is 21.

"I made a mistake." Phelps told Sports Illustrated's Rick Reilly by phone. "I know it's wrong to get into a car when you've had anything to drink. I'm 19 years old and I made a big mistake. I was taught to take responsibility for your actions so that's why I'm calling."

The swimmer from suburban Baltimore won eight medals at the Athens Olympics, including six golds.

Phelps, wearing a Baltimore Ravens jersey, was introduced to the crowd before the team's game Sunday night

Howard Keel, the Hollywood hunk who went from singing and dancing in a such classic movie musicals as Show Boat, Kiss Me Kate and Seven Brides for Seven Brothers in his youth to going toe to toe with J.R. Ewing on TV's Dallas in his later years, died Sunday morning at his home in Palm Desert, California. He was 85.

Keel was apparently too ill to participate in CBS' Dallas Reunion: Return to South Fork, which was taped before his death and aired on the network Sunday night.

One dead, five injured in Jacksonville skydiving plane crash
Associated Press
JACKSONVILLE - One person was killed and five others were injured when a plane carrying skydivers crashed Saturday at a small airport, officials said.
The identities of the victims aboard the Cessna 206 weren't immediately released.
The plane, operated by Skydive Jacksonville, crashed shortly after noon, Jacksonville police spokesman Ken Jefferson told The Florida Times-Union for its Sunday editions.
Investigators said one person died at the scene. Five others, including the pilot, were hospitalized; one person was critically injured, while the remaining passengers suffered only minor injuries, Jefferson said.
Officials said the plane crashed at Herlong Airport, which is where Skydive Jacksonville is based.
A woman who answered the telephone at Skydive Jacksonville's offices Saturday evening declined to comment.
The National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Aviation Administration are investigating.

Homeless left homeless

Police clear away camp that sheltered dozen people
PALM BAY -- They lived deep in the woods, an isolated world not far from the rumble of the railroad tracks and across from a school where children played.
But Tuesday that world ended for at least a dozen homeless people as public works officials cleared away tents and other property from four encampments just off of Robert J. Conlan Boulevard in northeast Palm Bay.
"They had a string of commercial burglaries that led us back to that area," said Palm Bay police Officer George Santiago, who patrols the industrial area where the camps were located.
"It's been there at least a year and had gone unnoticed but it had gotten too large. They even had a warning system and running water," said Santiago, describing the camps as "advanced."

Thousands of croaker fish live up to their name

techstar25 techstar25 writes  |  more than 10 years ago COCOA BEACH -- Dead croakers lined the beach as far as the eye could see Wednesday. Each wave brought more ashore. "It sure is difficult to deal with," said A.J. Hutson, assistant city manager for Cocoa Beach. Hutson sent a cleanup crew to the city's beach parks to pick up the fish. Judging by the thousands of fish bodies on the beach Wednesday, that seemed a losing proposition. Croakers stretched along the sand from Cape Canaveral to Satellite Beach. Earlier this month, similar croaker kills fouled beaches in Ocean City, Maryland and as far north as southern New Jersey. Biologists suspect recent hurricanes may have helped trigger a bacterial or viral disease specific to croakers.
