How Statistics Can Foul the Meaning of DNA Evidence

terrymr Re:People don't understand statistics (215 comments)

But getting a comparison that detailed will require a pristine sample from the crime scene.

What if I'm adopted and unknown to me my twin brother lives in the same town ?

How Statistics Can Foul the Meaning of DNA Evidence

terrymr Re:People don't understand statistics (215 comments)

DNA testing probabilities go something like this ....
we found say 5 markers that match the defendant and the sample. (I picked a small number to make the example shorter)
each of those has the following probabilities of occuring in a random person :

1) 1 in 1000
2) 1 in 10
3) 1 in 10000
4) 1 in 7
5) 1 in 100

so we multiply all those together and get a probability of mismatch of : 1 in 7,000,000,000

I even told a guy at the state crimelab that was stupid - not that he cared.

Microsoft Disconnects Modded Xbox Users

terrymr Re:***hoe m$ (738 comments)

It's worth a read of the xbox live forums before coming to a conclusion - Replacing defective fans seems harmless but the MS helpers say it's grounds to ban your console.

Microsoft Disconnects Modded Xbox Users

terrymr Re:Creative and engaged users, not cheaters (738 comments)

Hard to say - Microsoft isn't helping themselves when they say "You were banned for violating our TOS - we're not going to tell you which term or how you violated it because that's our policy".

There are quite a lot of tests planned over the next few years - Today was first stage performance / guidance / separation & recovery testing - the rest of the rocket was just a mock-up.

iPhone App Tracks Sex Offenders

terrymr Re:Tired of scare tactics. (358 comments)

Any kind of criminal is an easy target for politicians to beat up on without losing votes. Why ? Because the USA (and china) still bar felons from voting in many cases.

iPhone App Tracks Sex Offenders

terrymr Re:What a registry really looks like (358 comments)

State laws vary wildly on how classifications are made - here (washington state) there was a report on the TV about a level 3 in the area. Police openly he was classified level 3 because he was currently living in a motel and it would be lowered if he moved to more permanent housing.

iPhone App Tracks Sex Offenders

terrymr Re:Tired of scare tactics. (358 comments)

There are proposals going around across the country to add "Violent" crimes to the list of offenses requiring registration, scope creep is a huge problem, before you know it they'll make you register because you had a parking ticket.

Idaho prosecutes kissing in public between an 18 year old and a 17 year old as "Lewd conduct with a minor" - sounds terrible doesn't it?

Licensed C64 Emulator Rejected From App Store

terrymr Re:Editorialise much ? (277 comments)

This is pretty simple sega is not selling an emulator but rather a game which consists of game rom + emulator. If they were selling a general purpose sega emulator it would likely not be allowed by apple either.

Palm's webOS Root Image Leaks Out

terrymr Re:It doesn't work that way (176 comments)

I've even had companies that sell rebranded sprint service refuse to activate a sprint branded phone on their network, claiming the system they use to activate phones with the sprint network won't accept ESNs from sprint branded phones.

RIAA Filed 62 New Cases In April Alone

The "industry standard" claim is still as crap as the first time somebody made it. If the water was 60F above the recommended temp for brewing coffee it would have been steam.
