I'm skeptical since there doesn't seem to be an actual patent application

Australia's $44B Broadband Network May Settle For Fiber Near the Home

thedarknite Re:Pragmatic choice (229 comments)

3. So how did it come to pass that Rudd won, yet Labor's FTTH plan died and got replaced by the Liberal Party's FTTN?

The Labor party lost and Rudd has subsequently quit as a Member of Parliament

Australia's $44B Broadband Network May Settle For Fiber Near the Home

thedarknite Re:Don't they have an fiber to the node cable netw (229 comments)

I used to live with an Optus cable technician and the Telstra and Optus networks are not Fibre to the Home. They are Hybrid Fibre-Coaxial networks, so fibre to a node point and then coaxial to the homes that node services, with only a few nodes per suburb. It's still better than ADSL but the copper component still limits the overall speeds.

HP Launches Moonshot

thedarknite Re:Specs for the interested (168 comments)

All the press releases aren't particularly clear, but it seems the next iteration will have 4 processor nodes per cartridge which should make it more feasible for creating HPC.

HP Launches Moonshot

thedarknite Re:Specs for the interested (168 comments)

One of the services that you can buy from a hosting company is your own dedicated physical server, this will allow them to sell that service cheaper than a Xeon server, but still marked up higher than a virtual.

HP Launches Moonshot

thedarknite Re:450 servers, not 1800 (168 comments)

1800 threads isn't particularly impressive in an entire rack considering filling the same rack space with blade servers you can easily get over 2000 threads.

HP Launches Moonshot

thedarknite Re:Specs for the interested (168 comments)

It looks like a decent option for hosting companies to sell dedicated web servers to people, or internally for a company that is running virtual desktops

HP Launches Moonshot

thedarknite 450 servers, not 1800 (168 comments)

Someone at Phoronix really needs to learn basic math. The Chassis is 4.3U and hold 45 of these Moonshot servers, so a 47U rack could fit 10 chassis' for a total of 450 servers.

Has Kickstarter Peaked?

thedarknite Re:Ouya (156 comments)

You just have to take Miyamoto's words to heart - a delayed game is eventually good, but a rushed game is bad forever.

I'll counter with Daikatana and Duke Nukem Forever

Protons. Electrons have no appreciable mass. But it would be easier to add protons to iridium to make gold.

Apple Bringing Second Lawsuit To Samsung, Won't Wait For Appeal

thedarknite Re:Samsung's visibility (239 comments)

I looked at the numbers that were used for those graphs and it's incredibly misleading. It cherry picks data to make it look like Samsung has a vastly higher marketing expenditure than other companies. The comparisons are also against companies that are really only in a few markets vs the nine that Samsung Electronics are involved in.
Based on the 2011 annual reports.
- Samsung lists $2.9 billion for advertising expenses and $4.5 billion on Sales promotion expenses. (total $7.4 billion)
- Coca Cola lists $3.2 billion for advertising expenses and $5.8 billion for Promotions and Marketing programs (total $9 billion)
- While Apple list $0.93 billion for advertising expenses, that is the only expense they give a value for in their SG&A of $7.6 billion which includes retail costs, marketing, professional services, advertising and "other".

All that data shows is that everyone else hides their actual marketing expenditure better.

Apple's $1B Patent Award From Samsung Gets Cut By $450M

Samsung Electronics also covers their home appliances. I've seen more advertising for Samsung fridges and washing machines than phones/tablets.

Australian Tax Office Stores Passwords In Clear Text

thedarknite It's a third party not the ATO (84 comments)

A separate company that is managing a Publication Ordering Service for the Tax Office is storing passwords in plain text. I had to help set up access to the ATO portal at my last job and it requires installing company specific certificates per user or to be running a specific security application which, requires installing company specific certificates, the for the login screen to even show up

I sit in front of a screen for ___ of my waking time.

thedarknite Re:60-80% but I wish it were 0% (196 comments)

But the poll isn't limited to computer screens, add in televisions and cinema screens, also with in-car GPS you can easily be spending more time in front of screens than you realise.

Hotmail & Yahoo Mail Using Secret Domain Blacklist

thedarknite Re:Summary (345 comments)

My domain (a .edu.au) started being blocked by the hotmail servers yesterday with BAY0-MC2-F2.Bay0.hotmail.com #550 OU-002 (BAY0-MC2-F2) Unfortunately, messages from 203.xxx.xxx.xxx weren't sent. Please contact your Internet service provider since part of their network is on our block list and it was due to not having an SPF record.
After having one created mail goes through, but they seem to automatically be sent to the Junk folder with This message looks suspicious to our SmartScreen filters even though I don't see how. Maybe it's because I haven't had my domain registered with their third party "Safe Senders" list.
