General Mills Retracts "No Right to Sue" EULA Clause

thephydes the power of the internet .... (88 comments)

We'll as an outsider - non USA - this seems to me to be a demonstration of how powerful the internet is ie, forums like slashdot, social media, email, etc. Who in their right mind would think that they could sneak in a clause that takes away already recognised rights, without VERY public and international comment. Geez, who ever hired those lawyers needs to be fired on the spot, and the company needs to hire another firm of bottom feeders.

Mathematicians Use Mossberg 500 Pump-Action Shotgun To Calculate Pi

thephydes how is this new? (307 comments)

I first did this "dots in a circle" calculation for pi with a year 8 class over 30 years ago using 4 digit random numbers. Multiply the numbers by 10 000 so that they are all bigger than 1. Split the numbers in half to make an ordered pair from each one. Plotting them on a 0 - 100 plane with a circle radius 50 drawn on it. Determine the ratio of dots inside to outside the circle etc etc.

3D Printing: Have You Taken the Plunge Yet? Planning To?

thephydes as a Grandfather (251 comments)

I'd love to be able to - when my grandchildren stay the night - to be able to say to little Chloe "How would you like a pink horse" "Yes Poppy Yes!" "Well lets snuggle down for this story about horses and on this new machine Poppy will make a pink horse for when you wake up". When this is possible - yes I have a grand-daughter Chloe - then 3D printers will be mainstream. Until then they are for tinkerers.

TSA: Confiscating Aluminum Foil and Watching Out For Solar Powered Bombs

thephydes It's crap like this .... (289 comments)

That makes me wonder why I would ever want to visit the USA. I'm sure there are lots of beautiful places to go to and enjoy, but why would I want a semi-educated thug feeling me up and confiscating shit because I might be a bomber. Come to think of it I'm probably on the "fuck this guy over" list because of this and similar comments on other forums. Fuck you NSA, you've cost your country a potential tourist spending several thousand dollars travelling, eating, drinking, visiting places .........

Kickstarter Security Breach Exposes Customer Data

thephydes at least .. (63 comments)

they did the right thing and contacted all the people who use KS and advised them to change their login. Unlike Adobe who still haven't contacted me....... With influence comes responsibility - KS has taken responsibility, Adobe never did.

thephydes Re:Low Frequency (180 comments)

mmmmm I can lend you one if you need it. Like you I've always believed that LF means KHz or perhaps even low MHz (depending on the decimal point). Shows how out of touch we old hams are ..... Think I'll go back to my radio.

Heat Waves In Australia Are Getting More Frequent, and Hotter

thephydes Re:A Third Possibility (279 comments)

Yes you are correct, it is a possible scenario. However, real scientists look for real evidence that links correlation to causation. When we know that CO2 and others are greenhouse gasses (look that up if you're not sure what it means), AND we know that we have been pumping these gasses into the atmosphere at an ever increasing rate, AND we know that the earth has warmed, AND we are seeing some of the predicted effects eg extreme weather events, THEN the evidence matches the theory that we are a primary cause of global warming. Of course you could still be right and this is all down to natural variability..........

Could an Erasable Internet Kill Google?

thephydes only when the majority cares .... (210 comments)

will there be a functioning erasable internet. At the moment, 99% - probably more - of the population do not care what data is collected about them or even that data is collected about them. Those who do care, opt out in whatever way they can. Google = internet or IE = internet are dominant thought patterns and will continue to be. Edward who? .......

U.S. Measles Cases Triple In 2013

thephydes Re:Duh (462 comments)

This kind of tripe is quite frankly, offensive. You are effectively saying that God is hurting you because he can. If you are a Christian, read the Bible. Christianity is supposed to be the worship of a God of love, not a vindictive old man living somewhere in the sky, dealing out "punishment".

Reverse Engineering the Technical and Artistic Genius of Painter Jan Vermeer

thephydes I'm not an artist... (70 comments)

and don't pretend to be one, but I don't believe this "discovery" in any way belittles the talent of Vermeer. He was the artistic nerd of his time and his discovery is quite extraordinary - how many people today would think to do that?

Google Maps, Lasers Reveal Vatican Catacombs

thephydes well .... (84 comments)

Until the vatican can admit that priests molested children, and that they were complicit in those behaviours, frankly I don't give a flying fuck about the catacombs or anything else related to Catholicism. The Pope and his mates can go and fry in hell as far as I'm concerned. Yes, mod me down - I don't give a fuck about that either.

Lockbox Aims To NSA-Proof the Cloud

thephydes nas (292 comments)

Why would you put your personal data in "the cloud". It seems to me that there are plenty of just-as-secure options in NAS, or have I been duped by that as well?
