Why Women Have No Time For Wikipedia

thephydes perhaps men and women are different? (579 comments)

As a teacher with 35 years under his belt, I posit that men and women are different. In my - admittedly limited and anecdotal, and restricted to younger that 18yrs - experience there is a different communication mindset with girls compared to boys (women compared to men?) . I constantly see girls in groups of 8 or so with often one queen bee, and lots of conversation, whereas boys are generally in smaller groups and are quite happy to insult each other, throw a punch and grunt. Facebook emulates what I see in the yard with girls, Wiki-whatever emulates what I see in the yard with boys. Shoot me down if you feel the need to do so.

Aussie Airlines To Allow Uninterrupted Mobile Use During Flights

thephydes as long as ... (51 comments)

the ignorant cunt next to me isn't allowed to inflict his/her loud spoken conversation on me while I'm trying to sleep/tune out/read, then that's OK with me. As soon as they allow voice calls, air travel is well and truly fucked - much like going to a coffee shop in suburbia.

Oso Disaster Had Its Roots In Earlier Landslides

thephydes a question.... (64 comments)

I don't live there, but looking at some of the photos, is deforestation potentially part of the problem? Honest question for which I expect to be flamed by some.... but there it is.

Australia Repeals Carbon Tax

thephydes Re:Why so worked up? (291 comments)

"Do you know how much carbon you guys produce next to China or India? A laughably small amount." But you don't have the full picture. A lot of the coal they use comes from us. So we may not actually burn it, but we sell it to burn - making us one of the highest per-capita carbon polluters on the planet.

Teachers Union: Computers Can Negatively Impact Children's Ability To Learn

thephydes you don't need to be a teacher... (310 comments)

to see this, just look in any cafe. Several people around a table all checking their phones. Social interaction has definitely changed, in some ways for the worse. As for learning, other posters have mentioned engagement. The top students will not need to see "exciting" stuff to learn because they love learning and being challenged. The middle to low students will need to be entertained because that is what they are used to - TV, facebook, youtube, etc etc. Unfortunately this is the way of the new world. At the school where I work, the Phys Ed teachers tell me about children who have never climbed trees or chased/kicked a ball, and have terrible gross and fine motor skills - another symptom of technology not doing them a favour I suspect.

Another testament to one of the most amazing "machines" ever created. Hubble is a truly awesome telescope, and the pictures that come from it continue to amaze and astound us.

Ancient Desert Glyphs Pointed Way To Fairgrounds

thephydes Re: Logical (38 comments)

And you don't have a fucking clue either. Come up with a better, evidence-based solution or shut the fuck up. At least the guess was based on fact - Paraca's preceded Nazca's - rather than some bullshit theory dressed up as "science".

Ancient Desert Glyphs Pointed Way To Fairgrounds

thephydes Re:Logical (38 comments)

That's probably because it is easier to turn your brain off and believe in aliens, than to conduct real research and produce logical conclusions from it.

Man Builds DIY Cellphone Using Raspberry Pi

thephydes Why ...... (83 comments)

is it that people who probably don't have the skills to do something like this, always say that it is rubbish? Geeze, give the man some credit for ingenuity, after all thinking like he does is how technology progress.

General Mills Retracts "No Right to Sue" EULA Clause

thephydes the power of the internet .... (88 comments)

We'll as an outsider - non USA - this seems to me to be a demonstration of how powerful the internet is ie, forums like slashdot, social media, email, etc. Who in their right mind would think that they could sneak in a clause that takes away already recognised rights, without VERY public and international comment. Geez, who ever hired those lawyers needs to be fired on the spot, and the company needs to hire another firm of bottom feeders.

Mathematicians Use Mossberg 500 Pump-Action Shotgun To Calculate Pi

thephydes how is this new? (311 comments)

I first did this "dots in a circle" calculation for pi with a year 8 class over 30 years ago using 4 digit random numbers. Multiply the numbers by 10 000 so that they are all bigger than 1. Split the numbers in half to make an ordered pair from each one. Plotting them on a 0 - 100 plane with a circle radius 50 drawn on it. Determine the ratio of dots inside to outside the circle etc etc.

3D Printing: Have You Taken the Plunge Yet? Planning To?

thephydes as a Grandfather (251 comments)

I'd love to be able to - when my grandchildren stay the night - to be able to say to little Chloe "How would you like a pink horse" "Yes Poppy Yes!" "Well lets snuggle down for this story about horses and on this new machine Poppy will make a pink horse for when you wake up". When this is possible - yes I have a grand-daughter Chloe - then 3D printers will be mainstream. Until then they are for tinkerers.

TSA: Confiscating Aluminum Foil and Watching Out For Solar Powered Bombs

thephydes It's crap like this .... (289 comments)

That makes me wonder why I would ever want to visit the USA. I'm sure there are lots of beautiful places to go to and enjoy, but why would I want a semi-educated thug feeling me up and confiscating shit because I might be a bomber. Come to think of it I'm probably on the "fuck this guy over" list because of this and similar comments on other forums. Fuck you NSA, you've cost your country a potential tourist spending several thousand dollars travelling, eating, drinking, visiting places .........
