Ask Slashdot: An Accurate Broadband Speed Test?

theqmann Re: Really? (294 comments)

I've recorded sustained 700-800 mbps to a local networked fileserver over an 802.11ac connection. The fileserver's probably the limiting factor in this too.

Comcast: Destroying What Makes a Competitive Internet Possible

theqmann Re:movies should not go over internet backbone (227 comments)

Netflix does offer something similar to ISPs so they don't need to route all that traffic over the backbones, but since Netflix charges a fee to maintain the cache system, ISPs don't want it. Besides, if they did that, they wouldn't be able to complain and extort more money out of the backbone and edge providers.

Dropbox and Box Leaked Shared Private Files Through Google

theqmann Re:If it is linked, it is public... (92 comments)

It seems like the "vulnerability" that the article is talking about only happens when a recipient of the dropbox file link copies that link address into a google search query. If the user just clicks the link like a normal person, there is no problem.

Windows 9 Already? Apparently, Yes.

theqmann Re:9.1 (1009 comments)

What was so bad about ME compared to 98? It seemed like it was just a bunch of overblown hype, with no noticible differences. Also, the only real issue I had with Vista was the incredibly slow vendor response in making updated drivers. Also, driver makers could get the works for windows vista logo by only making 32 bit drivers, which left a lot of 64 bit OS users with non-functional hardware. With 7, MS changed the logo requirement to requiring support for 32 and 64 bit OS.

Weak Statistical Standards Implicated In Scientific Irreproducibility

theqmann Re:Interpretation of the 0.05 threshold (182 comments)

doesn't a p 0.05 mean that 95% of your data samples (2 sigma) support the hypothesis? wouldn't 1 sigma be more of a "suggestive" level? 95% seems pretty good

4K Ultra HD Likely To Repeat the Failure of 3D Television

theqmann Re:I would love 4K!!! (559 comments)

It should also support 60 Hz video using full RGB color. Most TVs are designed for 30 Hz YCbCr, which doesn't look great on a PC.

Blizzard Wins Legal Battle Against WoW Bot Company

theqmann Re:Bottable == boring IMO (285 comments)

they are also probably using a scripted set of tasks for the bot to execute, rather than being an AI. things like go to A location, activate npc for quest, go to B location, kill all rats within 10 meters, etc

Blizzard Wins Legal Battle Against WoW Bot Company

theqmann Re: forbidden from transferring or open-sourcing? (285 comments)

Couldn't they just say the lawsuit bankrupt the company and walk away? Don't "corporate persons" shield the employees from legal trouble?

Cost of Healthcare.gov: $634 Million — So Far

theqmann Re:simple (497 comments)

actual question here from an embedded programmer with little knowledge of javascript: is that code on line 79 trying to use the result of the "ffe.ee..." lookup as an index into a string array? What is the correct way to do this? C programming has lots of times where stuff like array[struct.var] = 4 is perfectly valid.

Will Cloud Services One Day Be Traded Just Like Stocks and Bonds?

Ah, but in these cases, consent was probably given to take the pictures, but later retroactively revoked. This law makes the retroactive revocation of consent legal.

Why Is Microsoft Setting More Money On Fire With Surface 2?

theqmann Re:XBOX? (616 comments)

actually the tri-core part is just a quad core part that is only guaranteed to have 3 working cores. makes yield much higher if you can still use the chip with defects in one core

FAA May Let You Use Electronic Devices During Airplane Takeoff and Landing Soon

theqmann Re:Test Team (166 comments)

It's the cell phone network congestion that is the issue these days, not airplane crashing. Up in the air your cellphone can see multiple towers simultaneously and cause network issues.
