Finland Dumps Handwriting In Favor of Typing

Those exact same adults will be signing their forms and marriage certificate using electronic keys. Perhaps we should teach these kids ECDSA before they hit the age where they need to sign things.

Debian Forked Over Systemd

thieh Re:Wow... (647 comments)

I wonder why the init system choices can't be configured to be more like Desktop Environments -- from the install media you choose which DE you want from a boot parameter and done. That way, even then default is systemd or gnome, people can still go on with their lives in a simple and easy manner.

Not to mention lead paint. What assurance do we have that they are not selling us lead ink?

It's not like they actually "earn" the money, so it's more like "I make money, you get fucked".

Researcher Finds Tor Exit Node Adding Malware To Downloads

thieh Re:Defaults (126 comments)

The problem is not everything can be accessed with SSL. Which makes me wonder why aren't we checking the files and checksum from different exit nodes. I don't think all of them patches the same malware do they?

KDE Releases Plasma 5.1

thieh Re:Does anyone still use Gnome? (60 comments)

The only thing I don't like about XFCE is that the latest one comes out at like 2 years ago which is like 3-4 versions of distros using a 6-8 month release cycle.

"Double Irish" Tax Loophole Used By US Companies To Be Closed

thieh Why..... (259 comments)

Why wouldn't people just use the system of "where your customers pay you" for any multinational company to determine "where to tax is owed"? Much simpler and fairer between different nations.

What's Been the Best Linux Distro of 2014?

I suppose if systemd develops to a way that violates arch's philosophy either arch will change the philosophy or arch will get rid of it from the default.

What should I tell non-tech firms regarding their security problems?

thieh thieh writes  |  about a month ago

thieh (3654731) writes "In the process of my job search I have come across recruiters and agencies that require me to sign up on their website. After I sign up with one of those websites they end up sending me back the password that I chose in plaintext in the confirmation email. Believing that to be a security problem (My assumption was that only generated passwords are to be mailed in the open unencrypted, and that the website has no plans to introduce two-factor authentication), I immediately delete the account and change all my passwords because chances are the passwrod setting habit may have been exposed. The question now is that since I don't have formal IT/sysadmin training, how to I tell these people that such a system is problematic and should be addressed? How would the situation be different if you can sign up tings that cost money (like resume critique or interview practice) using that account?"
