The Case For Oracle

tkinnun0 Re:Dalvik is not a Java VM (341 comments)

Many JVMs have a translation step that converts Java bytecode to some internal format before executing it. That Google chose to make this implementation detail public should not confuse anyone.

UK Court Finds Company Liable For Software Defects

tkinnun0 Re:What about OSS (205 comments)

Offtopic, really? Because that's what the OP is worried about, except instead of hammers and saws it's software and instead of maiming people the potential damages are harder to ascertain.

UK Court Finds Company Liable For Software Defects

tkinnun0 Re:What about OSS (205 comments)

Hi, I'm a hobbyist, I make hammers and saws, except I'm not very good at this hobby, but I give the hammers and saws away for free so when they break and maim people I'm in the clear because I didn't charge them anything?

Internet Explorer 9 Will Not Support Windows XP

tkinnun0 Re:Not surprised (454 comments)

The topic is XP's antiquated graphics architecture. One example of that is XP's inability to provide hardware-accelerated font-rendering for applications. Another is XP's atrocious graphics in portrait mode. All the goodies borne from the new graphics architecture point to Microsoft's decision to rewrite major parts of XP instead of pushing out more service packs being the right one.

Internet Explorer 9 Will Not Support Windows XP

tkinnun0 Not surprised (454 comments)

XP's graphics handling is really crappy compared to 7 and Vista, so this is no surprise. Flip an LCD to portrait mode in XP, then try to turn on vsync because horizontal tearing just became vertical tearing. Can't be done.

Free Software To Save Us From Social Networks

tkinnun0 Re:Uhh... (249 comments)

So if you trusted a cheap Made in China Facebook-in-a-matchbox server more than a billion dollar US company and were worried that Facebook employees would blackmail you with your photos then it might make sense? I'm sorry but I'm just not seeing it.

Free Software To Save Us From Social Networks

tkinnun0 Re:Demand depends on the price. (249 comments)

You are going to trust your personal information on a 10$ device that's always connected to the Internet? But let's say it becomes a success. How much would it cost to teach 100 million people how to put their private information on their own web server securely? Maybe a 10$ device is not so cheap after all.

Free Software To Save Us From Social Networks

tkinnun0 Re:No. (249 comments)

Create a searchable distributed bittorrent style network on which people share whatever information they want to make public.

So basically Facebook but even slower because it has to fetch every little bit of information from unreliable home servers?

Why would you take the responsibility to collect, maintain and secure your own data when Facebook does it for you, free?

A Skeptical Comparison of HTML5 Video Playback To Flash

We tried that before, and it sucked so much we welcomed flash with open arms afterwards.

Coping With 1 Million SSH Authentication Failures?

tkinnun0 Re:whatcouldposiblygowrong (497 comments)

Recognizing the reality for what it is without making a value judgement one way or another is now grounds for counseling? What next, not believing in God is grounds for re-education?

Freeciv As Benchmark of HTML5 Canvas Javascript Performance

tkinnun0 Re:Not fast (246 comments)

Where does the notion that a crappy business app is acceptable come from? If you bought a crappy game then you have a problem. If you have to use a crappy business application then not only do you have a problem, your employer has a problem too.
