Analysts Call IBM Layoff Estimates "Hogwash"

trifster Layoff's don't make sense (131 comments)

IBM is a services company. Human capital is their advantage. Unless they are not making a profit do not expect layoffs en masse. trimming fat, maybe. 150K sounds like bullcrap.

I personally recall seeing the $85 Polaroid digital camera when out this holiday season and commented it had to be terrible. If anything I am glad this article confirmed I have some tech instincts left."

trifster (307673) writes "Several news outlets are carring the story about EMI selling DRM-free MP3's through Yahoo Music's US online store. Ars Technica has an article on this trial. It should be noted that this trial is an attempt to increase sales and competition with online music that is not necessarilary available on iTunes.

From the article: "Why the sudden interest in non-DRMed formats? It appears that the record labels are slowly beginning to realize that they can't have DRMed music and complete control over the online music market at the same time.... There are signs that consumers might be growing irritated by the Balkanization of the online music scene. Nielsen SoundScan reports that online music sales dropped during the second and third quarters of the year.""

trifster writes "So I am 5 years removed from my undergad studies in Computer Science. While in college all we used was RHL and other *nix OS's for our work. I had no issues with the operating systems. Since then, I have been working in the public sector where we are primarily a Windows (read MS) shop. For my own personal time I have been running Windows for some time. Since my extended absence from the Linux community, can you provide suggestions to distrubutions and software to start with. I know this is really alot of personal preference but perhaps you can let me know some of your reasons for likeing one distro over another and it could help me in my decisions. Thanks!!"
