Theo De Raadt's Small Rant On OpenSSL

tsalmark Re:not developed by a responsible team? (301 comments)

My understanding is Theo said: Developers on a security product made a conscious decision to turn off last line of defence security for all platforms in the interest of performance on some systems. That does not sound like and unfortunate error to me, it sounds outright irresponsible.

Foxconn Sees New Source of Cheap Labor: The United States

I'm torn as to which metaphor should have the honour of bludgeoning you, the buggy whip or the ostrich head. Progress marches on: keep up or stop for tea with Ozymandias.

Don't Super-Size My Smartphone!

tsalmark Re:Bigger != Better (660 comments)

I've been thinking about this. I can buy clip on battery packs of various sizes for many standard phone formats. This is awesome. Most of the time I can wander around with a light phone. The times I'm going to need longer battery life I can clip a battery to the back and off I go.

Ask Slashdot: Best Option For Heavy-Duty, Full-Home Surge Protection?

tsalmark Buy home insurance (341 comments)

The cost of a whole home UPS/surge protectors is going to be rather more than the equipment it protects. Protect sensitive electronics. If you are rural consider burying the electrical lines from property line to the house.

Microsoft Shareholders Unhappy After Annual Meeting

tsalmark Re:Just now they're "disgruntled"? (521 comments)

Well most stocks went down over the same period and MSFT has been increasing their dividend slowly. I don't and wont own any but for a large company it has not done too badly. Going forward I can not imagine it ever growing at the historic rates, they are just too large and intrenched, but I don't expect they will do too badly either.

Ask Slashdot: CS Degree Without Gen-Ed Requirements?

tsalmark Transfer Cedits? (913 comments)

Skills besides programming are very important unless you want to be an underpaid code monkey. You say you have already taken or otherwise have the needed "Life Skills". Well find a good University you want to go to then figure out how much of their Gen-Ed you can skip through by transferring your credits in or getting life skills credit. Other than that if you are looking for programming only, it is called a trade school here, and is worth little more than previous experience in the field.

tsalmark tsalmark writes  |  more than 4 years ago

tsalmark writes "Sweden's Pirate Party, striking a chord with voters who want more free content on the Internet, won a seat in the European Parliament, early results showed on Sun. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/technology/yaaarrrrr-swedens-pirate-party-wins-seat/article1173283/. By now this is old news, but I don't see it, so thought I should point it out.
