World's Fastest Robot Versus the Wiimote

twosmokes I would have liked... (92 comments)

...to have seen the robot vs a person moving the tray. This wasn't robot vs human. This was robot vs wiimote lag. The video only serves to demonstrate my biggest problem with the Wii as a platform - it's far too imprecise for anything that doesn't require flailing the remote like a spaz.

OS X Update Officially Kills Intel Atom Support

twosmokes Re: load of crock? (610 comments)

Wait, so Apple fixed a hardware error and we should cheer them for it? After they gave her the runaround twice? Yes, stellar customer service there.

That's an issue that should have been resolved the first time she brought it to the store. If not then and there she never should have been required to mail the laptop back herself. Which then should have never been returned without a repair.

I'm sure there are many happy Apple customers, I just don't think that's the best story to show how great their service is.

Is There a Future For Mature Games On Wii?

twosmokes Bring on the bellyachers (186 comments)

Here come the 50 slashdot fuddy duddies bemoaning the label the ESRB has chosen to distinguish games with content not meant for children.

Please tell us more stories about how checkers and Mario Party are the most mature games you've ever played. It's a very interesting and fresh perspective.

Are Game Publishers a Necessary Evil, Or Just Necessary?

twosmokes Re:Totally unnecessary (173 comments)

I have never purchased a game that wasn't in a store. I don't know many people who have. I have never PURCHASED Linux or Open Office. It seems silly to do so. How do you think developers get hot in the first place? Sales. Good luck with your hobby.

Variety, Social Aspects More Important To Game Success Than Graphics, Plot

Perhaps my memory is failing me, but what had better graphics than Quake when it was released?

You need a citation to prove that you need to pass certain criteria to get in? Go look at any college's admission requirements.

Avatar, Has Sci-fi Found Its Heaven's Gate?

twosmokes Re:Three words: (443 comments)

James Cameron is good at making a two hour special effects laden chase scene. Looking for any depth or masterful storytelling in his movies is disappointing, but that's not why I'm seeing a James Cameron movie anyway.

Avatar, Has Sci-fi Found Its Heaven's Gate?

twosmokes Re:PST! (443 comments)

So explosions and giant, pretty looking smurfs can un-shite a rehashed plot? The GP didn't say it looked poor visually. "Oooh, shiny" says nothing about the story. Which is all I'm looking for anyway. I can live with low budget effects. Not so much low budget story and acting.

And this isn't me passing judgment on the movie. I obviously haven't seen it yet. I reserve the right to wait and see.

Go For a Masters, Or Not?

twosmokes Re:Work Experience (834 comments)

Situations appear to be different in different areas of the country. In several districts in Florida (possibly all of Florida) a master's degree in your field is highly encouraged for HS level and it will come with a substantial bump in pay. In my high school we had quite a few PHDs teaching courses (sadly no nobel prize winners). No degrees in education are required, but a teaching certificate is.

I THINK they're starting to slide retirement plans towards glorified 401Ks and the health insurance plan is absurdly expensive if you want to cover anyone other than yourself.

As for pay scale - it's certainly a livable wage, but nothing comparable to what a person with a master's could be earning in another field.

Early Look At the New Bionic Commando

twosmokes Re:360 and PS3? (63 comments)

Yes please. What I need now more than anything is a thumbstick to move and a brick to shake to do every other action. Because it would be fresh and exciting.

I'm bitter about my Wii purchase. Does it show?

Early Look At the New Bionic Commando

twosmokes Re:Wii? Are you serious? (63 comments)

Not exactly. It's more like how the car looks. Some people can look past an ugly car and enjoy driving it because of how it steers. Others dread getting into their car because of its boxy look and terrible interior in spite of the fact that it drives well. Then there's a third group who would rather have both.

Linux Needs Critics

twosmokes Re:Let me be the first critic (1127 comments)

Don't do this: "I may encourage you to run it too"

If you won't do this: "What do I care if Linux works for you?"

Or if you do, don't be surprised when people get turned off by Linux and go back to Windows.

Office Depot Employee — "We Changed Prices Too"

twosmokes Re:Hmm (492 comments)

What does any of that have to do with how much I actually pay for my TV to be at my house? I see newegg.com now has free shipping on most if not all of their sets. That wasn't the case when I was looking. All I'm saying is getting all hopped up over a TV that costs less on newegg is meaningless if they charge for shipping. I don't know how sound your theory is when the 2nd TV I clicked on at newegg is $100 cheaper at Best Buy - LN46A650. And what do you know? Newegg seems to be pushing extended warranties and bundles pretty hard in the checkout.

Office Depot Employee — "We Changed Prices Too"

twosmokes Re:Hmm (492 comments)

Except I don't get charged $30-$50 for it to be shipped to my house. When I bought my TV about two years ago, I couldn't find the model cheaper than Circuit City or Best Buy after shipping. I could have added Circuit City's extended warranty and only been $20 over the best price I could find online after shipping. And Circuit City had it delivered to my house the next day. For free.

Euro Parliament Wants "Red Button" For Shutting Down Games

twosmokes Re:Use a spoon. (167 comments)

Why don't we just dig out the eyes of our kids so they never have to run the risk of seeing something the parents fear may harm the child.

Way ahead of you. I installed this protection scheme on my son's 5th birthday. The girl is next in a couple of years. I keep impressing the importance of soaking it all in while she still can, but she keeps ignoring my advice.

Teachers Need an Open Source Education

twosmokes Re:What?! (440 comments)

if you have a job that is generally sought after and enjoyable you should get paid less than a similar job that is shitty.

OK. Now I understand our differing views. Teaching IS a shitty job. The bulk of your time is spent dealing with things that have nothing to do with teaching. Dealing with students who don't want to be there and disrupt other students. Trying to get a hold of parents and practically begging them to help their kids learn. Trying to find spare clothes so the kid in 4th period doesn't have to walk home in the winter without a jacket. Dealing with an administration that constantly changes curriculum and passes down edicts which make no sense. Ensuring that students pass arbitrary standardized tests at the expense of any real learning. Having students walk into your class covered in blood and say "Don't worry. It's not mine." That's what being an educator in a public school system is all about. Actual education is almost an afterthought.

more help getting successful people to move into the field with some experience

But you do that with more pay. It's wonderful that your wife is a highly qualified person who chose to take a pay cut in order to teach. But the vast majority of teachers are people with degrees in education which teach nothing on the subject you will be teaching. They are mostly incompetent. What other career doesn't seek out the best and brightest through compensation? You seem to think that there's some dichotomy that doesn't exist. Either you are doing the right thing and teaching at a (relatively) low wage, or you're a money grubbing lawyer? To my knowledge nobody has ever attracted higher qualified personnel because they offered lower wages.

Teachers Need an Open Source Education

twosmokes Re:What?! (440 comments)

The desire to teach is a HUGE positive in a teacher, and currently most teachers could be making more money. This means they are taking a portion of their pay in job satisfaction (don't let them fool you, it is a great job that makes you feel good).

What kind of horseshit is this? So because you enjoy your job you shouldn't be paid competitively? And employers shouldn't be able to pay those who are good at it well?

Paying enough that teaching appeals to people in it for the money is risky.

I know. You might get someone who *gasp* knows what the fuck they're talking about and is able to do a good job. Your attitude infuriates me (if you haven't noticed). Teaching is NOT volunteer work. It's a career. An important fucking career.
