Slashdot Asks: Do You Label Your Tech Gear, and If So, How?

umask077 Hair Ties (250 comments)

I mark my cables with colored hair ties just like one would use to tie a pony tail in their hair. The are cheap, Easy to find in many colors, and are easy to put on. Sadly they are easy to remove too but I haven't encountered that problem yes. Also good for marking long cables in the house. I know the blue tie on the ethernet cable goes to the master bedroom and the green tie to my daughter's room. Simple markings.

Ask Slashdot: Why Isn't There More Public Outrage About NSA Revelations?

umask077 I just don't see a point... (610 comments)

So they are spying, Its the NSA and probably several other acronyms. Nothing I do on the net is illegal. If they want to see what I ordered from Amazon more power to them. I'm not concerned with them having who I call. So I call my partner. my kids, my parents. my friends. Mostly we text, I'm sure they monitor text's too. Again, If they want to know I need to pick up a gallon of milk on the way home more power to them. There is just far to much data to be truly useful. I guess if your up to no good you have to worry but for the average person i suspect they just don't care.

Ask Slashdot: Good Ideas For Creative Gaming With Girlfriend?

umask077 Second Life (337 comments)

While not strickly a game many people find it a great way to interact with others far away., I met my partner there. She lived across the country for the first year of our relationship. Sounds strange but many of the things that can be done in real life can be done in Second Life. There are live DJ's and live musicians if you like to go dancing. There are video stores where you can purchase a video for viewing and watch it stream together from the comfort of your virtual home. There are some theaters. There is a ton to do in SL. From G rated on up. Its what you make it and its a great way to date while far away from your loved one.

Beware the Internet

umask077 He's just mad (314 comments)

He's just mad cause the press photographers went and he knows his day as a newspaper reporter are numbered.

Just remember,. A picture has been revalued to 38 words,

If he doesn't like the Internet disconnect. There is no law you have to. Suppose if he did he would quickly become as obsolete as his paper.

Google Looks To Cut Funds To Illegal Sites

umask077 Umm (347 comments)

So reading this dollar bill I quote. "This note is legal for all debts public and private". Refusing to deal in currency is a crime. Realizing paypal and visa don't deal in bills this still seems like they would be violating treasury laws in doing so.

Are Teachers Headed For Obsolescence?

umask077 Re: Teachers and Pay (570 comments)

Well one could argue that all salaries have decreased.. The states are out of money. That leave 2 choices, Cut salaries or let teachers go. I don't know how long you have been teaching but if you are new your the low person on the totem pole then your the first to go. This is a failing of the union. Its good to get further education. That's something that is a great thing. The solution of testing the students and that effecting your pay. It depends on more then just the teacher. The parents are a huge part of a student succeeding. That being said why do we not test the teachers? If they fail give them a year to catch up with the rest of teachers and if not, boot them.

Ok, it all sucks. Something has to be done but neither candidate has vowed to boost taxes. Romney says he wants to give a 20% tax cut across the board and wants to build 15 new warships a year, something the military is not asking for. Obama has promised not to raise taxes. Both are bad. Things aren't going to magically fix themselves. We have a huge deficit brought on by years of government spending, Do we fail to pay back China when they could impose serious sanctions that would effect us all and so the teachers suffer pay cuts. I'm making about 15000 less then I made 10 years ago. Nature of the beast. The only solution that could possibly help would be the most unwanted solution, Raise taxes, boost education, something I believe in. Otherwise the deficit will continue to go. 1.6 trillion this year alone was added to the deficit. Raise the taxes, Close the deduction loopholes. It's our country and its flailing to stay afloat.

Are Teachers Headed For Obsolescence?

umask077 Teachers and Pay (570 comments)

OK the biggest problem we have in amongst current teachers is lack of training. Some of those teachers have done no followup training since they graduated from college 20 years ago. My daughter was give and F on an art project because, and i quote her teacher, "Art done on the computer is not art." Funny, my sister makes 85k a year doing art on the computer.

The unions are the problem. We cant fire those who failed to keep up on their training. Your in school 180 days of the year. That leaves a lot of extra time for training. If we ditch the unions the teachers will either be forced to train or be replaced by someone who does have the skills required by modern students.

Are Teachers Headed For Obsolescence?

umask077 Recently during the Chicago teachers strike. (570 comments)

I was watching the news and they of course covered it; The teachers were striking because they only make $72,500 a year. The average medium income for Chicago is 41K/year. So next time you say "teachers don't get paid enough" think of Chicago. An dont forget. They only work 180 days a year.

Admittedly i know little about teachers salaries but if that Chicago is any example you being fed a line of crap.

Facebook Abstainers Could Be Labeled Suspicious

umask077 Guess im suspicious (625 comments)

To me the web is a tool for research and shopping. I don''t feel the need to use Facebook. If you say something e,employers can fread it. More improtantly data miner who IMHO are the scum of the earth collect all your Facebook data. For being social on the internet and connecting with friends there are other services like instant messenger and online worlds to gather and discuses things in real time.

Side note, Deleteing my facebook really helped my cell phone battery.

Apple Wins EU Ban of Smaller Samsung Tablet, Demands $2.5 Billion In Damages

umask077 Samsung vs Apple (377 comments)

Apples losing share because they do not stay current on tech. They are behind the phone system. Also there product was designed to be idiot proof but idiot proof frustrates technical people. Take that and Apple Itunes monopoly and policies and you have a recipe for a losing market share. I have owned a Iphone and presently own a Samsung Galaxy Note. Its nice to access the LTE network for more speed.

These are both good quality products but I will favor the Samsung from now on. Apple should quit its whining just because someone has a similar product and improve its product.

Lawsuit Claims NASA Specialist Was Fired Over Intelligent Design Belief

umask077 work place violation. (743 comments)

There is no excuse for discussing religion in a work place. Its a work place, not a church. They dont pay you to speculate on the existance of god. They pay you to job and if your not, then you get the axx. Personally i find that type of speech offensive. In my opinion there is no difference between someone trying to force religion on coworks thern there is for sexual hrassament. Both are deplorable crimes. The deserved to get fired.
