Microsoft's Risky Tablet Announcement

villy Re:Apple, Microsoft be damned.. (338 comments)

I think you've (closely) described the OLPC laptop: http://laptop.org/en/laptop/hardware/specs.shtml.

With some minor design changes, these guys could probably become a major player in the quickly-heating-up tablet/slate market.

Reliable, Free Anti-Virus Software?

villy Re:Easy (586 comments)

Not necessarily - There are a number of Dell laptops whose wireless hw does not have drivers available for Ubuntu. Broadcomm BC43xx? Ugh! Been there. There are fixes documented out there, but it requires some effort at the console (pkg installs + some config changes) to pull it off. Not guru-level effort, but certainly enough to scare off or irritate most newbs. Consider also that this person may already have a significant collection of Windows SW that they wish to continue using.

Aging Tech Books - Keep or... what?!?!?

villy villy writes  |  more than 5 years ago

villy (199943) writes "As someone who started out programming over 20 years ago, I've amassed a small library's worth of tech books. The problem is, I'm trying to clean out my basement to make room for more contemporary junk, but I'm having issues trying to figure out what the heck to do with some of these books! The problem is, for their time, some of these authors/books were highly regarded — Custer, Petzold, DiLascia, etc. It's just that the likelihood that I will need detailed information about Window's 32-bit memory management model and other aging tech constructs is (I believe) going to zero. Am I wrong? What should I do with these books if consensus is that I most likely will never need them again? Donate to a worthy cause? Burn for fuel? Stack in artistic fashion? Please help..."
