I wish my cell phone was...

watice Re:50% of us have an iPhone (495 comments)

There are tons of options in the settings that allow you to restrict what apps have access to resources like geolocation, social media, contacts, pics, etc. I'm not too sure what you mean by allow us to decide what software we run to do so. Do you mean that the app store doesn't have enough variety for your tastes? It's a difficult juggling act to please your desire for a secure environment while at the same time allowing you to run any piece of untrusted/verified code out there. Personally, obviously I think, I'm happy with the balance now.

Telegraph Contributor Says Coding Is For Exceptionally Dull Weirdos

watice Dull Weirdo Here (453 comments)

I would venture to say newspapers like the Telegraph are for exceptionally dull weirdos. Everyone else uses twitter & the web.

Swartz-Designed Whistleblower Tool "SecureDrop" Launched

watice Re:How does it work? (79 comments)

I haven't heard/read that. As I understood it, a different 3 letter govt agency (FBI was it?) was exploiting weaknesses in Firefox to track TOR users, but I don't believe the TOR network was "compromised by the NSA". I could be wrong though, I tend to not pay attention to conspiracies.

Apple Sells Nine Million iPhones Over Weekend

watice Re:fragmentation (432 comments)

To be fair, their record is pretty good on that issue. The iphone 4's were updated, & so were the 4S to ios7. That's more than 2 models back, or more than 3 years back.

Google Tackles Health

watice Re:They did that already (115 comments)

I actually found Google Health pretty useful, and my doctors were amazed when I pulled out that detailed medical history. They were able to easily cross reference CBC results & see trends easily. Microsoft HealthVault just doesn't compare in the ease of use & functionality that Google Health provided. I haven't been able to find a decent replacement for keeping medical records electronically stored since.

Death of the Car Salesman? BMW Makes AI App To Sell Electric Cars

watice Re:The answer is not the answer (168 comments)

Why would the AI say yes to such a simple question to answer? Also, I'm pretty sure the user agreement would cover all of that.

My ISP...

watice Re:Verizon FIOS effectively caps by borking NetFli (290 comments)

also, by having an actual cap on residential lines. Last I checked, it was something like 10TB/month to get the high usage letter. Oh, and you can blame the netflix stuff on netflix not paying their share on peering.

"Jekyll" Test Attack Sneaks Through Apple App Store, Wreaks Havoc

watice Re: iOS apps -- can they self-modify? (206 comments)

to which the apple reviewer should simulate your app running on more than just one day/occurrence.. my experience has been mixed. New apps take forever to get approved for me, but updates are pretty quick, 3 days or so.

Federal Judge Rules NYC "Stop and Frisk" Violated Rights

watice Re:I don't understand (308 comments)

I don't really think this has anything to do with race, per say. The stop & frisks are based on location of high crime areas. If the majority of people in those high crime areas are of a certain race, then the stats will reflect that those people were more likely to be stopped. The problem is that the WHOLE thing is flawed. When you're making shit up to stop & frisk everyone in a dangerous neighborhood, you begin to harass citizens who have not done anything wrong, and are in no way suspicious just to pat the numbers up. Just my $0.02 as a longtime nyc resident.

iOS 7 Beta 3 Now Available For iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch

watice Re:OMG, it still looks the same (205 comments)

Unless you're on a team, or part of a company with a developer license. You can develop an app without a dev license, including features that you do need a dev license to fully implement, such as PUSH or GPS. Sure, the testing is limited to the simulator (which has it's own limitations, obviously), but the development isn't. Provisioning/publishing is a whole 'nother story.

iOS 7 Beta 3 Now Available For iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch

watice Re:OMG, it still looks the same (205 comments)

You need an apple for the frameworks, obviously. I believe the word I used was "develop". Without getting too much into semantics, write it, send it to your licensed dev for provisioning, signing, & publishing, done. Developed without a $100/yr fee, on your part.

iOS 7 Beta 3 Now Available For iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch

watice Re:OMG, it still looks the same (205 comments)

I wouldn't exactly call it an "ability" to install malware. Frankly, I like the fact that my phone, one of my dearest forms of personal communication, is secure & sandboxed. I'm good on the Chinese malware apps.

Oh, and you can totally develop apps for free without paying $100/yr subscription. idk who told you you couldn't. Open up XCode & begin.

Are Contests the Best Way To Find Programmers?

watice Re:Contests are the best way... (260 comments)

a lot of those prizes involve you keeping your IP. I've entered in a few now, and only one large one required the final winner to sign over his IP rights for the prize.

Apple Releases Patch For Evasi0n Jailbreak (After It's Used 18 Million Times)

watice Re:FFS (112 comments)

Don't you have the option to remain jailbroken, jailbreak, or not update to the newest iOS at any given time to keep your JB? If Cydia apps are worth more to you than the increased functionality/methods for appstore apps, then your path seems rather obvious.
