Ask Slashdot: Computer Science Freshman, Too Soon To Job Hunt?

webminer Try positions in your university (309 comments)

Look for positions in your university or college. Usually depts have part-time jobs that might require programming skills. The university libraries are also a good place to look for these. Even if they advertise for tech support or audio-video related jobs, apply. There is a good chance you can get into programming side once you join the department. They will definitely prefer students. The pay might not be great but the job is easy, not much pressure and they will work with you to accommodate your class and exam schedule. I had a job in the library during my sophomore and junior years. It was best of both worlds. Got real life training in programming while still being in university environment. Also, helped because I could fit my work hours between class hours and they were pretty accommodating during exam weeks. My job was maintaining a few internal websites which used PHP and mySQL.

Tesla To Build Its Own Battery-Swap Stations

webminer Re:reclaim their original battery? (377 comments)

How is this "new" tax any worse than the gasoline tax we all pay today? The state needs money to maintain the roads and infrastructure. Everyone has to pay! In this case its even more fair than applying this tax to your electric bill.

Florida Teen Expelled and Arrested For Science Experiment

If she was brown (Asian brown, not Mexican brown), you would see FBI, DHS, ATF, CIA, NSA, [fill in 3 letter Federal agencies] at that school and international news coverage on the case.

Google Gives 15,000 Raspberry Pis To UK Schools

webminer Re:What about the USA (159 comments)

Why not kids in Asia, Africa or any other continent? Obviously, Google does not generate their revenue from US alone. They might be 'US-based' or whatever that means, but the people who work there are from tens of countries around the world and their products are consumed by people around the world. I understand you are American and obviously want to know why your fellow citizens are not benefiting from this. But this is not a zero-sum game. Every bit, anywhere in the world helps!

You got it wrong. Pakis are majority Sunnis and Iranians are majority Shiite. That's why most of middle east hates Iran. Saudi Arabia, UAE, Kuwait, Iraq are all Sunni majority.

Inside Newegg's East Coast Distribution Center

webminer Re:Clueless guy visits a fulfillment center (112 comments)

I agree. Shipping15k packages a day is nothing. I work in the controls industry (software side, not PLC). Some of our biggest customers are big retailers. The most recent DC that I worked on ships no less than 150k cartons a day. They run 24x7 during peak seasons (Thanksgiving and Christmas). The conveyors we installed run at 500ft per min to accommodate the throughput.

America Losing Its Edge In Innovation

webminer Re:It's happened before... (757 comments)

I disagree. The Persians were the one of the most advanced scientists and engineers in the world before Arabs i.e. Muslims took them more over and destroyed their knowledge base.

Scientifically, You Are Likely In the Slowest Line

webminer Re:Costco (464 comments)

This kind of setup would be god-sent for people like me who live in Florida! Freaking old people take hours to checkout. And then they have to chat with the checkout person and use thousands of their coupons even in the 10 items or less line too! Grrrr.....

Indian Military Organization To Develop Its Own OS

webminer Re:Not the best track record (466 comments)

Arjun MBT is one of the finest tanks in our part of the world. The problem with its development is not because of just DRDO. It has to do with the govt policy, the army constantly changing its requirements and finally the penetration of Russian arms agents in the Ministry of Defense. All these factors have delayed the induction of a tank that kicked Russian T-90s in every environment that the Indian Army fights in. The comparative field trials of the Indian Army a few months ago showed Arjun MBT has consistently performed better than T-90. So, DRDO came out with a better tank that Russians who have decades of tank-building experience.

Wal-Mart To Launch Unlimited Wireless Family Plan

webminer Re:Sounds to me like... (278 comments)

Actually, you can do this with T-mobile smartphones too. I bought a HTC HD2 off the craigslist, loaded Android into it. Its a T-mobile branded and locked phone but I was still able to add the $10/mo unlimited web for phones (not the $25/mo smartphones plan). Another neat trick was being able to setup fring and getting google voice to work with it (via sipgate and sipsorcery). I get free incoming and outgoing calls using this method. I just hand out my google voice number. I have been an AT&T customer for more than 6 years but I couldn't take it anymore!

Microsoft Holds iPhone Funeral Event

webminer Re:Its just one tragic blunder after another (311 comments)

Well, technically, I did buy a windows phone (HTC HD2, runs Windows Mobile 6.5). But I loaded Android 2.2 as soon as I got bought the phone. Now, I use windows only during bootup (which is maybe once a week). I couldn't stand the winmo interface for more than a few mins. Laggy and slow. Not sure if win mo 7 will fix anything at all.

India Now Wants Access To Google and Skype

While that sounds wonderful, we will see if that saying holds true when you are surrounded by pakistan and China. Imagine if Mexico was pakistan and Canada was China. We will see how well you will stop the terrorists from infiltrating from the south.

India Now Wants Access To Google and Skype

webminer Re:India = not all that democratic (366 comments)

By the same logic, US is a terrorist-sponsor nation. US has pacts and is allied with pakistan. It continues to provide it arms and military aid despite knowing well that pakistan is the epicenter of terrorism and has pretty much sponsored every terror act around the world including 9/11. US also provides weapons to Saudi Arab
