Microsoft Boasts of Tiny Energy Saving With IE

xcix do less, use less (243 comments)

Maybe it's the lack of WebGL support, IE does not need to use computation power to render the pretties. Or maybe it's the lack of support for modern Web standards in general. "Choose my app! it does uses the less power! It does one single thing turns off the lights in your monitor!"

Ask Slashdot: Is Outsourcing Development a Good Idea?

xcix depends on the application (403 comments)

I think it depends on the needs of your client. My adviser's field of study is educational software and games, through working with her I have learned that the most difficult part of the development process is the design and not the coding. I feel to design very effective educational software you will have to understand the pedagogical context of your clients. And to design engaging educational games, you will have to understand the students background and interest. Especially since our school system and culture is radically different from say India, it is difficult to develop something that is fits well with the requirement of the client. You can probably write a very detailed requirements doc. But if it has to be detailed to the point where you are listing all the functions, you would probably feel its easier to just do it yourself. The big question is how well divided will the design and software development processes be? If both can be considered separately, then out sourcing won't hurt the company too much. Otherwise outsourcing may cause the company to lose more money than they save. Good luck, may your job be safe.

Teacher Suspended For Reading Ender's Game To Students

xcix 1985 (1054 comments)

Doesn't 1985 have umm actual sex? I just started reading the "Tale of Two Cities", the scene where Madame Manette reunites with her father is disturbing incestuous and erotic. Is the shower fight seen between two boys? Maybe the lady has another problem on her mind. Because it's still socially acceptable to bet up on pornography but not homosexuality.

When Algorithms Control the World

xcix but algos don't write themselves (150 comments)

doesn't life itself forms according to algorithms? don't we live our lives and preform most of our duties according to some set of algorithms? the way were thought to brush our teeth or the way you file paper work into a cabinet. It is that for certain types tasks, we have developed devices which can execute the algorithms we develop faster than we can with our brain's capacity. but in the end, algorithms cannot produce themselves. we can write an algo to take on different sub-algos depending on the situation, or have it modify itself to preform better given certain inputs. even with non-deterministic algorithms, there still is another algo which simulates the randomization, which is also written by someone. I don't understand why this article makes it sound like the algorithm is dependent of the human being. Isn't any algorithm just an abstraction of the way we live our lives? If I found a better way to preform a task or solve a problem, what is wrong with generalizing my method and sharing it? But then again, maybe my complaint here is fruitless... I am probably not the only slashdotter who dreams about optimizations and theoretical runtimes
