Yahoo! Expands Open Web Platform Plans

xtaski And how does this help them against Google? (67 comments)

The problem Yahoo! seems to be skirting is that Google has mass adoption already and they can't seem to find a way around it. Google gets this adoption b/c it has its fingers into every online ad outlet known to the Internet gods. Yahoo! needs to get its hands dirty and lay off the technology and fix its business penetration first...

Why OpenSolaris failed to build a community

xtaski xtaski writes  |  more than 6 years ago

xtaski (457801) writes "Ted Ts'o, one of the earliest Linux developers, points out some serious flaws in OpenSolaris — a severe lack of developers for one. Apparently after 3 years the OpenSolaris "developer community" has no means for developers to develop! Oops... Ted also points out some other flaws that make it clear just how disconnected the executives at Sun are from what's really going on in their "open source communities"."

xtaski writes "In recent weeks, Microsoft seems to have gone out of its way to put Linux down, while boosting Linux. First, there was the bribetop scandal; then, the Wikipedia 'correction' affair. Now, the company is up to one of its oldest tricks: playing games with analyst reports. This time around, Sunbelt Software is working with the Yankee Group, a research company with a poor reputation in Linux circles, to produce its "yearly major survey comparing Windows to Linux." Here we go again."

xtaski writes "Everyone took notice when Ballmer spewed forth FUD about Microsoft and Linux IP. Now CIOs are asking just what did Ballmer think he was doing? They are not fooled — but rather — a little angry. ComputerWorld covers the news including one CIO who says "There were some applications I had been thinking about moving to a Microsoft platform, but this has now totally alienated me from Microsoft.""

xtaski writes "Dana Blankenhorn puts bluntly what we've all know for some time: "The war is over and Linux won". With Oracle and Microsoft putting Linux in the spotlight and positioning themselves to grow with Linux. "A new report shows that 83% of companies expect to support new workloads on Linux against 23% for Windows. ... Over two-thirds of the respondents said they will increase their use of Linux in the next year, and almost no one said the opposite.""

xtaski (457801) writes "There's a new Linux desktop migration guide out: "Linux Client Migration Cookbook, Version 2". It is now available for free download from IBM and covers both planning and implementing a desktop migration strategy. For all those readers worried about the HW refresh required to upgrade from Win98, XP, or that messy thing called Me, this book may be of great benefit. It's a great guide especially for consultants or IT staff looking for a path to move themselves or clients away from the status quo.""
