China Bans Government Purchases of Windows 8

z_gringo only forbids purchase, not use (200 comments)

It doesn't sound like they are actually forbidding the use of Windows 8. They are just forbidding the purchase of windows 8. I guess as long as pirated copies are used, then everything is fine?

Facebook Data Miner Will Shock You

z_gringo Completely useless information (164 comments)

I use Facebook quite a bit. I also leave nearly all of my information as viewable publicly. This digital shadow app couldn't even accurately present information that is publicly posted or information to which it was given implicit access by logging in through Facebook. Location, Active times, close friends, income.. All completely wrong. I think that page is just a ruse to gain access to your Facebook information, which will then be used for other purposes.

Apple Developing Curve Screen iPhones and Improved Sensors

z_gringo Re:Nexus - still on the fence (243 comments)

Also, why would you need swiftkey? The android keyboard does the same thing now.

Swiftkey allows you to type in two different languages without autocorrect issues. This is a HUGE deal for people who use regularly use different languages when typing on their phones.

"War Room" Notes Describe IT Chaos At Healthcare.gov

z_gringo Standard War Room activities (346 comments)

All that reads like pretty standard War Room activities for a launch of this size. There is a reason they chose the name "War Room" for these things. It is just a central location where issues are triaged, and it can be chaotic after a launch. This is an example of the press trying to make a big story out of something that isn't news by reporting on something that most people don't understand.

I would be more concerned by the lack of a war room than from war room chaos.

Nicaragua Gives Chinese Firm Contract To Build Alternative To Panama Canal

z_gringo Re:Which Columbia? (323 comments)

Surely he meant Columbia, South Carolina as the university in New York wouldn't make sense. And DC would be a horrible place for a canal. Nevertheless, your point is still valid as South Carolina is also long, long, long way from the Pacific ocean.

Well they had a renault engineer on the phone. I would think that he would have tried the things you mentioned. I suspect this was a legit case of a serious malfunction.

HP Cuts Workforce By 5%, Looks To Probe GM Hires

z_gringo Re:So.... (304 comments)

HP is going after GM. The contract that they are talking about is the contract that HP has with GM not a contract between HP and its employees. HP will be seeking compensation from GM in this case as there is most likely a contract preventing GM from poaching HP's employees.

Nevertheless, Once HP makes it public that they are laying off a large number of employees, it only makes sense that the HP employees on the GM account would first explore their options with GM. I would bet that the HP employees initiated this and not GM, but that is why HP wants to depose them.

Prediction Market Site InTrade Bans US Customers

z_gringo Re:That's excessive. (260 comments)

Not really. The CEO of Bet on Sports, was a UK Citizen, living in Costa Rica and was arrested while changing planes in the US just because some of his customers turned out to be US citizens. He spent 33 months in jail, as I understand it.

Verizon Tech Given 4-year Federal Prison Sentence For $4.5M Equipment Scam

z_gringo Re:Crime pays (163 comments)

The Federal system doesn't have parole. And federal prisoners must complete at least 85% of their sentence, so good behavior will get him a 15% reduction at most.

Google Improves Android Translator To Battle Siri

z_gringo Re:Siri and translation (185 comments)

My standard IOS 5 alarm app does recurring alarms just fine. I can't say what the alarm app did or did not do before IOS5, but the app in IOS 5 has no problem with setting up and alarm for every weekday at 6:30am. Siri can't set it for you though.

The new Siri is integrated into the new iPhone 4S,which is what I am using. And yes, it uses off-device assets. It was released with the 4S last Friday.

Google Improves Android Translator To Battle Siri

z_gringo Re:Siri and translation (185 comments)

Not only does Siri not do translations, the command / control functions that she is supposed to do, are extremely limited. Siri, at least for me, fails to work most of the time even for the incredibly simple tasks that I have tried, such as calling contacts and playing certain songs.

For example, Siri can set the alarm for 6:00am, but if I want that alarm to be set for every weekday, that task is too complex for her.

Siri can play songs, provided that your song list is filled with popular songs in english by artists with English sounding names, but if you are using Siri in English and happen to have songs in German by German artist, then Siri is useless. Ditto for making calls to contacts whose names aren't common names for the language you are using Siri in.

Siri actually doesn't seem to be much better than IBMs voice recognition software that I used nearly 20 years ago.

I can't see why anyone is remotely impressed with Siri, it is just a useless waste of time as far as I can tell. Google translate, on the other hand seems really impressive with being able to recognize the speech and translate it to another language.
