I have noticed that the size of a bottle or cup of soda just keeps getting bigger and bigger. Seriously 44oz Soda at the drive through it doesn't even fit in a cup holder and now there is a 64oz Mega Jug are you kidding. Wait theres more would you like to Super size those fries. To a certain extent that is true. However, there can be significant variations within any given state with respect to income, education, and culture generally. California for instance has a huge "health-conscious" segment, typically affluent or at least comfortably seated within the middle-class. It also has large populations having low-income and poor education. There seems to be many correlations, including:
- Poverty
- "Racial" mix
- Religion
- Political leaning
Some of these may have common causes.
One thing I believe is a causation, and not a correlation is the large parts of the US where you don't have pavements, almost no zebra crossings and a dearth of frequent and affordable public transportation. Whelp, since Americans drink more soda than other countries, CLEARLY it must be their "primary means of hydration" and their "morning ritual". That's not just logic, it's racist logic, which everyone knows is the best kind!
Funny how your own links refute your point. The CDC one, for example, shows that only half of all Americans even drink soda on a given day, and even fewer if you only count adults.

Half of Americans consume soda. The average consumption is 1 liter per American. Since half do not drink soda regularly then those that do drink nearly 2 liters per day. Since the older you get the less soda you drink, that weights the younger crowd with even more consumption. Since the average adult drinks 2 liters [wikipedia.org] of water per day, clearly Americans, particular younger Americans ARE hydrating themselves with soda or they never leave the bathroom.

Your math doesn't add up. You claimed 13.15 billion gallons per year for the entire US population. That works out to an average of 442 mL per day. Since half do not drink soda regularly, that means those who do would drink a bit under 900 mL a day. That's less than half their fluid intake. Based on the previously discussed numbers, there may be some teenagers who get the majority of their water from soda, but they'd be a tiny group.

Sports drinks are my preferred morning beverage when I am hungover. Otherwise its coffee or tea (depending on how my tummy feels), OJ or soda (depending on what I have on hand, I prefer OJ, but the acidity of soda is good for getting that morning breath taste out of my mouth before I brush my teeth too). Energy drinks would probably be better than a soda, but since you cant easily find them by the case, its annoying to try and keep stock of them.

It's all the same garbage. The difference between a "sports drink" and an "energy drink" is 100% marketing.
Totally not true. Sports drinks (like Gatorade) are mainly some combination of salts, with a small amount of sugar added for a short burst of energy. Energy drinks (like Monster) are mainly caffeine (and guanine) and sugar intended for longer burst of more intense energy. Sports drinks may advertise themselves as energy boosters, but the principle behind the advertising is the rapid restoration of electrolytes opposed to the somewhat slower restoration from drinking unsalted water. It's only the "hair of the dog" if you've sobered up enough by breakfast to have a hangover (or the start of one). Otherwise, it's merely a continuation of the previous session. An old age pension is unlikely to be collected with such a lifestyle, of course.
Sadly, a number of folks of my acquaintance adopted this lifestyle only after retiring. It does tend to limit the number of years one may actually collect a pension.

That stuff just screws some people up. Some people can take it fine but I find it has serious impact on my personality, my eating habits and my tiredness levels.
I desperately wanted a drink which was warm, all day drinkable and wasn't coffee and finally realised after years of drinking jasmine tea at my local Vietnamese pho house that it's been right in front of me for years.
The caffeine content is vastly lower, no sugar is required to reduce the bitterness, the calorie count is 0 and I find I can drink it all day long.
I now drink near a gallon a day (I have it quite weak) and feel so much better for it.
I also had fatty liver and since moving to jasmine tea my liver has significantly improved.
I do know some people have no problem and good for you but the impact on me is astounding. Especially if I have it after not having it for a long time. Last time I broke a drought and had 2 at a cafe over 2 hours with a friend they were basically in shock at my reaction to it. Couldn't stop talking or moving, incredibly energetic, much like I had amphetamines (which I have had before) - the feeling was almost identical.

Have you tried a Tom Yum paste? Chilli gives me the early morning endorphin boost and wakes me up better than caffeine.

I don't drink a whole lot of coffee, maybe 2 cups a day and usually not in the weekends (I used to drink more in the office, though, but now I work from home and I'm just too lazy to sudo make myself some coffee). And sometimes I skip a week just for the heck of it.

I agree. That was how I stopped smoking. The break from tobacco while I had the flu was just long enough that when I was feeling healthy again, the very first smoke I lit up tasted absolutely foul and I never had another one after that. I don't drink coffee or tea, and I avoid cola. (I'll drink cola if someone brings a cocktail containing it, or if I'm somewhere foreign and I have trouble asking for something else, but apart from the caffeine I hate the way my teeth feel after drinking it.)

What you are saying is definitely true. I used to be a coffee addict. I was self diagnosed but I had realized that I was having headaches on the day I was not drinking my two liters of coffee. So I cut coffee for 3 month and the headaches never appeared again passed the first weeks.
Now, I still drink coffee but less. I make espresso myself at home. But, having coffee outside is an other story now that I live in the US. And espresso means either a small amount of regular coffee or large amount of man-you'll-

I am caffeine sensitive so I have to be very careful how much I drink. One tall in the morning really helps if I have not slept well. Any more than that and I become very irritable and have a tenancy to yell a lot.

I answered "Coffee and plenty of it", knowing that "plenty of it" for me is about 12 oz.
Occasionally I'll have more than that, but not often.
If I have dessert , I'll often have a little coffee because it goes well with it, otherwise I rarely drink coffee after noon.
Coffee is attributed with lowering risk of diabetes and prostate cancer, but I might not drink enough to get the effect.

I agree. When I was an undergrad I drank 10 to 15 cups of coffee a day. Of course I was working nights, going to school during the day and sleep was a luxury. Now I'm down to only five or six cups a day of the real thing and some decaf when I want coffee but not cafeine.

Yup, that's my choice. Too much makes me queasy, jittery, makes that first cup less effective, and, if done for long enough, means I get terrible headaches if I accidentally fail to get enough. One or two cups in the morning, with an occassional day off to make sure I'm not getting hooked, works brilliantly.

I grew up in Illinois, and we commonly called it "pop". Moved to the Boston area for school, and I could never bring myself to call it "tonic", so I compromised and called it "soda". "Pop" just got me laughed at, but "soda" was acceptable, even if it drew funny looks from some.

I know what you mean... I got into green teas while I was living in India, mainly because I liked the taste without having to sweeten it, and I'd been getting too fat, and stopped drinking black tea almost altogether (except Indian style with lots of milk, sugar and spice, as an occasional treat). My favorite green teas are the plain ones, with the "grassiest" flavors, brewed quickly, 30-60 seconds, though some of the flavored ones are pretty good, too.

After having anxiety attacks years ago I cut out all caffeine. I have since allowed myself some caffeine in more recent times. However I only use in moderation. I see folks having several extra larges a day, and think that can't be good for you. Anyway I take one medium coffee in the morning, half decaf half normal with milk and sugar.

For me it was even simpler. I realized I was physically addicted when I started getting headaches if I didn't drink enough. I said to myself, "this can't be right", so I went cold turkey for a while, then cautiously re-introduced one cup in the morning. Not only do I not have withdrawal symptoms any more if I skip that cup, but that one cup is far more effective than it used to be when my tolerance was so high. Also, not having a fast acting protein source for breakfast is just as stupid, if not moreso, than drinking a Red Bull on the way to work. Just sayin'.
I'm pretty sure the whole thing about refilling your protein in the morning is as much of a myth as the "stoking the metabolic fire" thing about eating 5-7 meals per day if you work out. Personally I find it much easier to just have two meals per day and I find it much more pleasant than 3+ meals per day. Also, I have not seen any reliable sources about the whole "stoking the fire" thing (beyond the typical online broscience).
